Hi Jude,

Interesting find and question.

First, please do not dig to see if there is truly anything buried there. This would be illegal in many ways.

This burial does not fall under the legal definition of a historic cemetery. It does fall under archaeological laws for the State of Oregon. The contact for information on these laws is Dennis Griffin (503) 986-0674.

Usually the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) and the Oregon Commission on Historic Cemeteries work to keep burials in their original locations.

Should the property owner want to remove the burial there is a process of notification required to notify family and get their approval. The Oregon Mortuary and Cemetery Board has information about this process. http://www.oregon.gov/MortCem/index.shtml The SHPO must be notified and likely a permit furnished, use the same contact as above.

If the burial remains in place, it would be very important to be sure that the burial is noted on the property records housed at the county.

Hope this helps.

Hi,

Found what appears to be one grave in a residential area. Head stone, soft ground etc, havent dug yet to make sure but it sure looks like more than a headstone is there. The man was a WOW member (so says the marker)
The man was buried 1912
The house has been torn down, land is for sale.

Do you know anyone that can give us advice on moving it to our cemetery. What is involved etc.

Thanks
Jude
