The Payette County Historical Society invites all who want to learn
more
About doing good oral histories of their family members, or help with
this
community project, to a workshop.
It will be held Sat., Jan. 16, 2010 at the Payette County Museum, 90
S.
9th St, Payette.
“The lives of ordinary people often contain romantic moments,
frightening
Incidents, sad tales, breathtaking escapes and sudden twists of fate.
Or
You just may want to get grandma’s life story. This workshop will
help you
achieve
Those goals,” says Kathy Hodges the Idaho State Historical Society
Oral
Historian.
Hodges will conduct the workshop beginning at 10 a.m. And continue
Through to approximately 4 p.m. The PCHS will furnish the drinks.
Participants need to provide their own “brown bag” lunch. The class
will
Otherwise be free to all who attend.
Hodges’ class is provided by a grant from the Idaho Humanities
Council.
The PCHS recently received a grant from the Idaho State Historical
Society to provide the state archives with interviews on agriculture
in
The county.
“We are looking for interviewees to participate in the program. The
topic
Will focus on how agriculture has changed over the last 40 or so
years,”
Said PCHS Coordinator Ann Curtis. “Those people will be required to
sign
A release allowing not only the Payette Museum, but the ISHS to use
the
Tapes and transcriptions for education and historic purposes.”
“After the grant requirements have been met, the PCHS hopes to
interview
A variety of individuals on all kinds of topics,” said Curtis. “We
find
It an exciting and very educational project for us to undertake. These
Interviews will be invaluable to upcoming generations, family
Members and researchers.”
Hodges’ class will lead a discussion about memory, story and history
along
with
Explaining some of the basics of recording and preserving oral
narratives.
She will be using examples from the 2,500 plus interviews in the
ISHS’s
collection.
For more information you may call Curtis at 642-4883
Wednesday-Saturday.
This program is funded in part by the Idaho Humanities Council, a
Nonprofit organization that serves as the state-based affiliate of the
National Endowment for the Humanities.
