Phoenix Pioneer Cemetery
Early Settlers Rest Here
Join historian Dorothy Cotton at the Phoenix Pioneer Cemetery on Sunday May
1, 2016 from 11 am to 1 pm and learn about the early history of the cemetery
and about the souls who rest there. Trustees of the cemetery will be on hand
to tell the stories of the pioneers and early settlers. The Phoenix Pioneer
Cemetery is located at 607 N Church St. in Phoenix, next to the Phoenix
Historical Society Museum. This is a free event and advance registration is
not needed. Dress for the weather and wear comfortable walking shoes.
On November 16, 1874 Sam and Huldah Colver sold two acres of their Donation
Land Claim to establish this cemetery on Church Street and five other
pioneers were appointed to be the trustees of town's cemetery. Burials from
an earlier cemetery on Graveyard Hill at the south end of Rose Street were
moved to the new location. Among the historic figures buried in the Phoenix
Pioneer Cemetery are John Coleman, Oregon's first female legislator Marian
Towne, and the Ferns and Furry families. Many will recall Richard Frederick
Bolz (1872-1954) whose land holdings became the sites of the Phoenix High
School, Ray's Market, and the new I5 highway exchange.
Heritage Cemetery Days is a new event series offered by the Southern Oregon
Historical Society, visiting historic cemeteries throughout Jackson County.
On Sunday, July 10, 2016, SOHS will visit the Rock Point Cemetery in Gold
Hill.
