Save the Date for TV-Turnoff Week 2006
Did you know *that the American children spend more time watching television than they spend in school or in any other activity except sleeping? Did you know* that research consistently demonstrates that hours watching TV and engaging in other screen-time activities contributes to the staggering increase in childhood obesity? Did you know * that TV/screen time has also been linked to aggression, reduced reading ability and scholastic achievement, tobacco and alcohol abuse, sleep disturbances, decreased interpersonal skills, early sexualization and attention deficit disorders? Did you know* that over one-third (36%) of all children six and under has their own TV in their bedroom? Did you know* that The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that childrenunder the age of two not watch any television, and that all children over two be limited to one to two hours of educational screen media a day? What can parents and schools do to raise the awareness that "screen time" should be limited to ensure the physical, social and emotional health of their children? Participate in TV-Turnoff Week during April 24-30 During TV-Turnoff Week participating schools and families plan to take a break from the TV and instead spend their time reading, walking, talking, playing, cooking, and listening to music. Many families use this week as a springboard for making a permanent change in their families TV viewing habits. Last year over 100 Oregon and Southwest Washington schools participated in TV- Turnoff week. Each school implemented TV-Turnoff Week according to its own culture and needs. A wide array of activities occurred from poster contests to classroom competitions to logging the most TV free hours to TV-Turnoff nights that offered a variety of family activities.
