Schools are faced with the challenge of providing healthy, affordable, acceptable foods to all students! Please provide your comments before the April 13th deadline! You have until Wednesday, April 13th to submit comments (support or suggested changes) on the proposed rule to update the nutrition standards for meals served through the National School Lunch and Breakfast programs as part of the healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010. To comment, click on the link in the Action for Healthy Kids email below. The comments from Oregon's Department of Education Nutrition Services are attached, and the Action for Healthy Kids' email contains partner websites with additional examples of sample comments. Please do not miss this opportunity! >>> "Amy Moyer, MPH, RD, Director of Field Operations" 4/8/2011 8:33 AM >>> Each school day more than 32 million kids have breakfast or lunch at school. Thousands of Action for Healthy Kids volunteers made their voices heard in Congress last year by signing our Petition for Healthier Schools and Kids. If you want to continue to show your support for healthier lunch and breakfast at school you can provide comments to the USDA on their proposed rules, Nutrition Standards in the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs. Follow this link to learn how to make comments. The deadline is April 13. In short, these rules would require school meal programs to: Increase the number of servings of fruits and vegetables served with meals, with an emphasis on a greater variety of vegetables and fewer starchy vegetables; Ensure all grains served in the school lunch and breakfast programs are rich in whole grains; Serve milk that is fat-free or low-fat; and Lower sodium in meals over time. In addition, training and technical assistance would be provided to help schools implement the meal changes by the start of the 2012 school year; and schools would be regularly reviewed to assess compliance with the new nutrition standards.
