"Aunt Lena's Cucina', More Than a Cookbook! Portland, Oregon, December 2nd 2008. Aunt Lena, a.k.a. Anne-Louise Sterry has just published her new cookbook, Aunt Lena's Cucina, and it is more than a cook book. Eat to live and live to love! That's the underlying message in this wonderful collection of Italian-American recipes brought to your table by the irrepressible Aunt Lena. And not surprisingly these simple to prepare family recipes make perfect sense in a world where everyone is concerned about nutrition and a healthy way of life. Good food, a good life and love are intertwined absolutely in every recipe. From ingredients available nearly everywhere it is possible to make dishes that, as Aunt Lena observes, "Show some respect!" Not just for the food and the people who eat it but for yourself. Lavishly illustrated with glamorous pictures of Aunt Lena herself, Aunt Lena's Cucina is that rare combination of guide to life, recipes and coffee table book. Available now at www.blurb.com and at events to be announced. Aunt Lena is the creation of Anne-Louise Sterry, an internationally known speaker, storyteller and singer. Aunt Lena is the notorious, unpredictable, yet almost prescient distributor of "Cutting Edge Mediterranean Wisdom". She is the Italian Aunt whose view of life, love, husbands and food does not just bring a smile to people's faces but actually goes a little deeper into their lives and makes a real difference to them. When Aunt Lena says, "Ya Gotta Make Yer Own Gravy" this is not just domestic economy advice. No, it is the rough and accurate summation that in this world no-one is going to make you happy. Only you can do that. But when Aunt Lena says this she has a way of making it sound like the very next thing you will be doing. And ones own gravy does really taste better! Anne-Louise; and Aunt Lena; perform across America and Europe in concert and keynotes. She is a former nurse (still licensed), is a professional member of the National Speakers Association, a board member for the Clackamas County Arts Alliance, a member of Children's Music Network, Portland Songwriters Association, the National Storytelling Association and the Association for the Education of Young Children. Anne-Louise has recorded and produced five CDs of music and stories for families with more on the way. Her CD "Making Ravioli" won the Children's Music Web Award for Best Spoken Word Recording for Older Children in 2003. She teaches storytelling at the Masters Degree level through The Innovative Northwest Teacher for Portland State University. Her work includes keynote speaking and presentations on the subject of finding and choosing joy in life, not just now and then but for always. Nominations requested Teachers and Librarians throughout Oregon are invited to suggest book titles for the 2010 Oregon Battle of the Books. We have extended the deadline for title submission to December 14. Please forward this notice to others who may want to suggest titles for the program (this includes public librarians). Fill out the form listed to submit titles: http://www.oasl.info/OBOB/recommendations.htm The Oregon Battle of the Books Committee is compiling new lists of recommended titles for three grade levels: Grades 3-5, 6-8 and a new high school level of Grades 9-12. An attempt is made to vary the titles chosen according to genre and difficulty so that readers may encounter a broad range of books. Criteria for the selection of titles Number of titles:16 titles Grade level/reading level: Balanced grade / reading level. Grades 3-5, 6-8 and a new high school level of Grades 9-12. *Interest level: Consider a balance of subject areas, plots, settings and styles and interest for boys and girls. *List must include a variety of genres, including realistic fiction, nonfiction, fantasy, science fiction, historical fiction, mystery, multicultural, and Oregon represented in some way. *Quality of the books: Select high quality, well-reviewed, age-appropriate titles. Award winners such as the Newbery, Young Readers Choice, will be considered. *Availability of titles: Books should be currently available in paperback format whenever possible. Intellectual freedom: In accordance with the Library Bill of Rights and its interpretations, titles that otherwise meet the selection criteria will not be excluded: "because of the origin, background or views of those contributing to their creation," or "because of partisan or doctrinal disapproval;" or "because of actual or suspected parental objections" or "in an effort to avoid controversy with parents." Other considerations: It must be kept in mind that the Oregon Battle of the Books is not meant to be a required program in the schools. A student's participation is voluntary. This being the case, it should be expected that different criteria are used for the selection of these titles than those used in selecting materials for required activities in individual school districts. Message-ID: <20081201173135.d4196b6d@OSLMAC.OSL.STATE.OR.US> Hello! Oregon Reads is looking for people to facilitate and moderate the book discussion blogs for Apples to Oregon and Bat 6 (one blog for each title). I'm wondering if any of you are interested or if you know someone else who may be interested. We need to find at least 2 people, 1 to moderate each blog. I think if a couple people want to co-moderate one of the blogs, that might be possible too. The moderator(s) will be responsible for writing the actual blog postings that will facilitate the book discussion and approve the comments posted by the public to make sure they are appropriate--no swear words, no sales pitches from people trying to promote their own books etc., and no comments that aren't related to the book. Since the blog feature isn't developed yet I don't know exactly what it will look like or how it will be set up, I'm assuming it will work like blogger.com or any of those other major blog services. We're looking for people who will take time to post new blog entries to facilitate the book discussion once or twice a week and to approve comments from the public once a day to keep the blog very active for the public, and people we can trust to have good judgment about appropriate content because we will hopefully have children posting to these two blogs. The commitment would be for January 1 - April 30, 2009. The blog discussions are extremely important because they are the only way many Oregonians will be able to participate in Oregon Reads. Most small libraries do not have the resources to host or sponsor any events, there are thousands of people who live outside library service areas, and geography is a huge issue for the rural areas of our State--especially with the snow and ice in January-March.
