The 2007-2008 Ready to Read Annual Report, 2007-2008 Outstanding Projects, and 2008-2009 Project Descriptions are now available at http://www.oregon.gov/OSL/LD/youthsvcs/aboutready.shtml. The Ready to Read long and short term results of the are now reported using four metrics that measure the effectiveness of the Ready to Read Grant program over time. The metrics provide longitudinal data on public library youth services and public library usage statistics. This data allows public libraries to see how their efforts impact library services to children in Oregon, and serves as a tool for setting local youth service goals. The 2007-2008 grant cycle was the first to benefit from the funding increase to $1 per child and the $1,000 minimum grant. Libraries received a total of $144,871 more funds in 2007-2008 than they did in the previous grant cycle. As a result, the number of libraries using the Ready to Read Grant to fund one or more library youth services best practices increased significantly. Early literacy training increased by 32%, summer reading programs increased by 49%, and outreach to children and caregivers increased by 68%. Each year the State Library staff recognizes several public libraries for their outstanding Ready to Read Grant projects. The criteria for this recognition are: the library adheres to the original intent of the Ready to Read Grant, focuses on one or more of the three Ready to Read Grant best practices, promotes partnerships both in and out of the library, and creates a project that is replicable in other libraries, or enhances current library services. Libraries recognized for their Outstanding Ready to Read projects in 2007-2008 are: Emma Humphrey Public Library (Vale), Lakeside Public Library, Siuslaw Public Library, Scappoose Public Library, Klamath County Library, and Beaverton Public Library. Sullivan, M. (2009). Connecting Boys with Books 2. Chicago, IL: American Library Association. In his hugely successful Connecting Boys with Books (2003), Sullivan delved into the problem that reading skills of pre-adolescent boys lag behind those of girls in the same age group. In this companion book, Sullivan digs even deeper, melding his own experiences as an activist with perspectives gleaned from other industry experts to help you ? Learn about the books that boys love to read ? Uncover the signs that point to the reading gap ? Find creative new programming ideas to match boys' interests ? Establish a strategic blueprint for boys and reading Drawing on more than 20 years of experience, Sullivan shows how to reinvigorate the sense of excitement that boys felt when they first heard a picture book being read aloud. (book description) Jordano, K. & Callella, T. (1998). Phonemic Awareness Songs & Rhymes: Winter. Cypress, CA: Creative Teaching Press. Phonemic Awareness Songs & Rhymes is a complete resource book that includes dozens of interactive, theme-related songs and rhymes that help children listen to language and manipulate, or "play with" sounds. Each song is sung to a familiar tune based on a standard classroom classic, making it easy to incorporate the songs into your lessons. The CD includes instrumental songs and 37 songs from the book sung to the same tunes. Phonemic Awareness Songs & Rhymes also includes reproducibles, a helpful cross-check index to simplify lesson preparations, and reproducible activity cards that can be cut out and laminated to create a handy reference file of fun ideas. This is an all-in-one resource filled with engaging, interactive activities and silly, playful songs-a winning combination for any reading-development program! Cotsen Children's Library: Virtual Children's Books Exhibits http://library.princeton.edu/libraries/cotsen/exhibitions/index.html Princeton University's virtual exhibit of past exhibits of children's book illustrations offers visuals and brief explanations geared towards children and adults. The easy-to-use website is divided into four virtual exhibits, that contain a portion of what the physical exhibits at the Cotsen Children's Library at Princeton University displayed. The four exhibits can be accessed by clicking on their links on the homepage. The "Water Babies" exhibit contains illustrations of swimming, and was meant as a respite for kids who couldn't escape the city's heat. Each illustration in the virtual exhibit is accompanied by a short synopsis of the book or publication it came from, and often a web link or reading suggestion for more information on the author, illustrator, or subject matter of the book. The "Magic Lantern" virtual exhibit contains illustrations of magic lanterns, a type of projector widely available for home use, that were the precursors to film and television, and which enthralled children and adults alike. The "Creepy-Crawlies" exhibit highlighted the many illustrations of insects in children's books and natural history. The insects in children's books were most often portrayed as evil or villainous. But, if visitors can put those feelings aside, they will find many beautifully rendered drawings. The physical "Beatrix Potter" exhibit coincided with the publication of the Beatrix Potter Collection of Lloyd Cotsen in 2004, and the virtual exhibit contains illustrations by Potter, and others, with whom the visitor can use for comparison, to see Potter's unique style. >From The Scout Report, Copyright Internet Scout Project 1994-2009. http://scout.wisc.edu/ Katie Anderson, Library Development Services * Youth Services Consultant * Oregon Center for the Book Coordinator * Oregon State Library, 250 Winter St. NE, Salem, OR 97301 katie.anderson at state.or.us, 503-378-2528 -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... If you work at a school library or other type of library or agency contact your local public library to find out how to partner on summer reading program activities and events. All public libraries in Oregon use CSLP materials to develop their own unique summer reading program best suited to their community. Find out what your public library has planned, ask how your school or organization can get involved. If that doesn't work, the most CSLP materials are available for anyone to purchase from: http://www.highsmith.com/cslp/. If you have any questions please contact me at katie.anderson at state.or.us Thank you, Katie Katie Anderson, Library Development Services * Youth Services Consultant * Oregon Center for the Book Coordinator * Oregon State Library, 250 Winter St. NE, Salem, OR 97301 katie.anderson at state.or.us, 503-378-2528 From: statereps-cslp-bounces at lists.cslpreads.org [mailto:statereps-cslp-bounces at lists.cslpreads.org] On Behalf Of Ruth Metcalf Sent: Friday, February 13, 2009 1:47 PM To: statereps-cslp at lists.cslpreads.org Cc: adult-cslp at lists.cslpreads.org Subject: [statereps-cslp] FW: Adult manual link HELLO EVERYONE! Currently the CSLP Website is undergoing some changes to a different type of server. For this reason, Karen Day, of the CSLP Administrative Services Agency agreed to send me a link to the 2009 Adult Summer Reading Manual. Here is the link: http://www.nclsa.lib.ia.us/CSLP/Adult/Adult%20Manual%20Small.pdf This link will also be available at a later date on the CSLP State Representative section of the website. Please use this to send to librarians in your state for use with this year's 2009 Master the Art of Reading Adult Summer Reading Program. The CSLP Adult SRP Committee and Highsmith worked together to bring this to fruition. VERY IMPORTANT NOTE: The 2009 Adult SRP manual is copyrighted material and is owned by CSLP. Please let your constituency know that this is for use by CSLP members only. No portion of this manual may be distributed or used by outside agencies. Questions on this may be directed to me at the email below. We are very pleased with the result and hope you find it useful for use with your Adult SR programs. Ruth A. However, please note that I haven't seen the book and am not making a personal recommendation! BJ Quinlan OLA CSD Chair My name is Artie Knapp and I am a Children?s Author in Cincinnati, Ohio. My new book, Stuttering Stan Takes a Stand has just been released. Stuttering Stan Takes a Stand is about a little squirrel who stutters and how his disability affects his life and those around him. Here?s a story about my book in the St. Petersburg Times. http://www.tampabay.com/features/books/article969896.ece Stuttering Stan Takes a Stand is published by the Division of Speech Pathology at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, which is the largest pediatric speech pathology program in the United States. http://www.cincinnatichildrens.org/svc/alpha/s/speech/choose/default.htm Barbara L. Gibson did the illustrations for the book, and you might be familiar with Barbara?s work in Audrey Penn?s Kissing Hand sequels. Here?s a direct link to the book on Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/Stuttering-Takes-Stand-Artie-Knapp/dp/0982167709/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1235057044&sr=8-1 Please note that Stuttering Stan Takes a Stand is available through Ingram at a 25% discount to libraries and schools. Both myself, and Cincinnati Children?s Hospital, sincerely appreciate your consideration for carrying Stuttering Stan Takes a Stand. Artie Knapp www.artieknapp.com REVIEWS: Mr. Knapp writes a wonderful tale of friendship, building self-esteem and the understanding of others with disabilities. This children's book is about a squirrel who stutters and how his disability affects his life and those around him. Stuttering Stan learns that friendship, understanding and self-respect are important for everyone. This book should be read by all children and adults alike to reaffirm those important life lessons that Stan's story brings to the forefront. Tammy Flores, Executive Director The National Stuttering Association www.nsastutter.org As one who stuttered and was teased throughout childhood, I read this elegantly illustrated story with great interest and anticipation. From the beginning, I identified with Stanley, the stuttering squirrel, as he encountered cruelty because of his speech. Knapp deftly shows Stanley?s ambivalence and hurt. The power of the tale, however, lies in Knapp?s bringing all the friends together during a scene of self-discovery, kindness, and forgiveness. This story will give courage to children who stutter, and it will help those who do not stutter become more understanding and empathetic. Bill Maxwell, Editorial Writer/Columnist St. Petersburg (Florida) Times Children who stutter often bear the emotional burden of being targets for undeserved teasing and bullying. Stuttering Stan is such a gift to those children as well as to any child who is teased. It gives them an empowered model for handling those bullies! Thank you for this book, Mr. Knapp. Catherine S. Montgomery, Executive Director American Institute for Stuttering www.stutteringtreatment.org Mr. Knapp has written a touching story about friendships, respect, courage and compassion. A must read for every child, especially those who stutter. This exquisitely illustrated story shows how being a friend can make others feel good about themselves. Every child is special in their own way and like many of Artie Knapp?s other stories, this humorous tale shows that you can do anything if you believe in yourself. Kristin Garrison, Newspapers in Education Manager The Cincinnati Enquirer Artie Knapp's knack for identifying the things that worry children shines in Stuttering Stan Takes a Stand. His characters, displayed in especially lovely illustrations, and their interactions, are those young children will recognize from their experiences on playgrounds and in their classrooms. Embedded in this appealing story are important messages about human kindness and acceptance of challenges. This is a book I will be recommending to educators everywhere. Kathleen Carpenter, Editor, Teachers.Net Gazette www.teachers.net/gazette Stuttering Stan Takes a Stand was reviewed in the February issue of Kidsville News. Kidsville News is The Nations Fun Family Newspaper, with a monthly circulation of 1.4 million. http://www.kidsvillenews.com/articles/current/parentown/bookshelf.aspx From oregon.srp09 at yahoo.com Sat Feb 21 15:57:56 2009 From: oregon.srp09 at yahoo.com (Childrens Librarians) Date: Sat, 21 Feb 2009 15:57:56 -0800 (PST) Subject: [kids-lib] Summer Reading: 2011 Children's Artist suggestion Message-ID: <566140.11992.qm@web111205.mail.gq1.yahoo.com> ~ Please excuse cross-posting ~ ?
