The latest edition of the Newbery and Caldecott Awards guide covers the most distinguished American children's literature and illustration. Librarians and teachers everywhere have come to rely on this annual guide for quick reference, collection and curriculum development, and readers' advisory. New York: Neal-Schuman. With today's digital natives, educators face new challenges in guiding young adults to discovery of the critical thinking and enjoyment that comes from lifelong literacy not to mention simply reading simply for pleasure. For anyone seeking to hone their skills as a guide to YA reading, Latrobe and Drury give you a theoretical basis for your programming with cogent explanations of eight critical theories of literature: . New Criticism/Formal Criticism . Psychological Criticism . Sociological Criticism: Relationships in Context . Historical Criticism . Gender Criticism: Opposite Sexes or Neighboring Sexes? . Archetypal/Mythological Criticism . Popular Culture and Criticism . Reader-Response: A Unique Literary Event Critical Approaches to Young Adult Literature is for librarians in school and public libraries (plus their colleagues across the curriculum) who strive for collections and programming that elicit thoughtful responses and build higher-level literacy skills across grades 6-12. The authors explore all facets of creating a vibrant YA reading community such as inquiry-based learning, promoting and motivating reading, collection management, understanding multiple intelligences, accepting diverse beliefs, and acting as a change agent to name a few. Latrobe and Drury also provide basic questions designed to involve young people, activities to encourage critical responses and bibliographies of YA books with annotations. Please let your early childhood colleagues know about the free webinar described below. These funds are for public or private non-profit organizations, including faith-based organizations or for-profit organizations, and must be used to "support the enrollment of additional children and families as well as create new teaching and other positions in Early Head Start programs." Oregon has been allocated $5.7 million in expanded Early Head Start funds, but organizations must apply through a competitive process to receive the funds. The RFP was issued a few weeks ago, and applications are due July 9. (See the federal website http://eclkc.ohs.acf.hhs.gov/hslc/Early%20Head%20Start for more information.) This is a wonderful opportunity to expand Early Head Start services and partnerships in Oregon, and we want to make sure that interested Oregon organizations have the information they need to put together strong applications. Mary Foltz, Developmental Consultant at the Early Childhood Training Center at PSU, will be the webinar presenter. It is free of charge and open to all. The information will be of interest to those who are planning to apply for federal funds this summer as a lead or partner organization, as well as anyone considering Early Head Start services in the future. The Obama Administration has signaled its intent to propose additional Early Head Start expansions in the coming years. Attached is a Save the Date flyer that you can forward as you see fit. We have sent it out already through the Head Start Association, local commissions, and Healthy Start and Relief Nursery networks. We are also sharing the flyer with the child care R&R system. We will have more information next week about how to register, and I will forward that to you, as well. Please let me know if you have questions! Thanks ?
