As you may know, Reading is an Investment (RII) is an Oregon State Treasury program designed to promote literacy and financial education among K-5 elementary students in Oregon. It usually runs from October through March, and one requirement is to read a certain number of books from the recommended reading list. Because an increasing number of books on the list are out of print, the program facilitator would like to update it. See attached. The goal is to add titles that meet these criteria: * Still in print (Not sure? Send the title(s) anyway.) * Focus on financial literacy, money management, identifying money, counting money, saving, investing, and other related topics * Well reviewed, or at least not poorly reviewed (But, hey, a recommendation from you is a good review!) * Mix of fiction and non-fiction * Mix of reading levels suitable for K-5 If any titles spring to mind, please send them my way by Friday, August 19th. Please include the title and author. If you want to add further information like which concept(s) each book focuses on, an estimated age range, and/or why you recommend the book, that would be useful. I'll forward a list of all suggestions to the RII work group. One suggestion or 27 - they'll all be helpful. I just received the following email from ALA's Association for Library Services to Children (ALSC) about the online professional development courses they are offering in the Fall. These workshops may seem expensive, however they are all online so you don't have to pay for travel and they are all self-directed which means you can work on them at your convenience so your library doesn't have to pay for a substitute. They cost: * $165 for people who are not members of ALA and not members of ALSC * $145 for ALA member who aren't ALSC members * $95 for ALSC members Questions? Each of these online courses offer professional development and programming ideas. They are also for anyone who loves children's literature and wants to celebrate great kid's books! All courses are offered through Moodle, ALA's online course software. The list for Fall 2011 online courses is currently being developed: http://www.ala.org/ala/mgrps/divs/alsc/edcareeers/profdevelopment/alscweb/upcoming.cfm Introduction to Graphic Novels for Children 6 weeks, September 26 - November 4 Participants will learn about graphic novels, an emerging trend in children's publishing. Students will be educated in what resources to use to locate children's graphic novels, how to evaluate these books, how to start or develop a collection, and how to market the collection and provide programming to patrons. Funding and cataloging will also be discussed. [Taught by Janet Weber, Tigard Public Library!] Connecting with 'Tween Readers 4 weeks, September 26 - October 21 This course will examine the characteristics that make this age group unique; developmental needs and abilities; why children of this age group are particularly vulnerable to illiteracy; and unique activities and programs (including the utilization of currently popular technologies) libraries can offer to keep these children on the path to becoming lifelong readers. The Caldecott Medal 6 weeks, September 26 - November 4 With so many children's picture books published each year, how is the Caldecott Medal winning book selected? What makes picture book illustration distinguished, and how has that definition changed over time? Learn about the history of the award, how the award has transformed books over time, and how to look critically at picture book art. Series Programming for the Elementary School Age 4 weeks, September 26 - October 21 Children love series books. Lots of libraries have one-shot series parties or events. This course expands on the one-shot idea and provides the tools necessary to establish series clubs at the library so that more children will read and use the library more often. Enjoying trivia, games, music and reading, children will clamor to come back to the library each week. Reading Instruction and Children's Books 5 weeks, September 26 - October 28 This course will provide children's librarians with an understanding of different methodologies for reading instruction and ways that the grade-level of reading materials is determined. Books, periodicals, websites and other material that children need to read will be evaluated from these perspectives. Librarians will be encouraged to develop strategies for explaining these grading formulae to parents and to communicate more effectively with teachers as a result of their understanding. For more information on how to sign up please check out ALSC's Professional Development site, http://www.ala.org/alsced. The cost for each online course is $95 for ALSC members, $145 for ALA members, and $165 for non-members. Dear Oregon Libraries, Thanks for your participation in Destination College Savings, a joint effort of the Oregon College Savings Plan, the State Library and the Oregon Library Association designed to get more kids involved in your library's summer reading program while raising awareness about saving for college. By encouraging your patrons to participate, you will help 15 families win $1,000 toward their college education. Plus, every winner's library will also receive $500 to use toward future programs. As of August 22nd 4,332 children and teens have been entered in Destination College Savings by their parents, grandparents or guardians. The deadline for entering is fast approaching. Entry forms must be postmarked September 2, 2011-that's next Friday! Please remember that it takes time to verify the eligibility of the 15 winners. Winners will be selected in a random drawing within the second week of September 2011. Once winners' eligibility has been verified, they will be notified and given until approximately October 15, 2011 to complete and return the paperwork necessary to claim their prize. Libraries will be notified that they have a winner after their winner's paperwork has been approved and they have been confirmed as a winner. Libraries with confirmed winners will receive a sample press release so they can publicize their winner locally as soon as possible. Statewide publicity will take place for all winners who claimed their prize by approximately October 15-probably the beginning of November 2011. There will not be a re-draw for prizes not claimed by the October 15 deadline. However, libraries listed on the entry form of the person who did not claim their prize will still receive $500 for participating in Destination College Savings. Thank you for participating in Destination College Savings! No purchase necessary. Void where prohibited. Please visit OregonCollegeSavings.com for official rules and prize details. Entries must be postmarked by September 2, 2011, and received by September 6, 2011. Sponsored by the Oregon College Savings Plan. We have a "Science Log" to go along with the Summer Reading Log, do a "Preschool Stories and Science" series, and partner with OMSI, Mad Science, and Evergreen Aviation Museum on events. I know some other libraries have done some similar science stuff during the summer, and we'd love to share ideas, successes, and "challenges." So we're having a Science Program Debriefing Meeting here at our library on Thursday, September 8th from 10:00 am - 12:00 noon (sorry for the late notice). It's not a formal presentation, just talking about what we've done, how it worked (or didn't) and braintorming future possibilities. If you've done summer science stuff, or are thinking of doing something like this in the future, you are invited to join us. Or send an email if you have any questions or want more details.... - Steven Engelfried, Youth Services Librarian Wilsonville Public Library 8200 SW Wilsonville Road Wilsonville, OR 97070 503-570-1572 engelfried at wilsonvillelibrary.org -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
