Monday, July 11 is your last opportunity to get into one of five excellent courses. Each offer a hands-on learning experience and way to connect with other professionals in your field. Not convinced? See what fellow students are saying about these courses: Series Programming for the Elementary Age ?Having time to discuss with other children?s librarians was a great part of this experience.? ?Well worth the time spent--great learning experience. Thank you!? Out of This World Youth Programming ?The course far exceeded my expectations. I am very excited about using what I have learned at my library. I now have two binders full of great information and ideas. I am so happy the first course I took was with Angela Young she is outstanding. I will definitely sign up for upcoming courses with ALA.? ?The instructor was wonderful and offered useful feedback. I liked being able to see the other students' storytime plans and appreciated the fresh, new ideas. Thanks!? Information Literacy: From Preschool to High School ?Ms. Mori is an excellent teacher and very skilled at working within the online environment.? ?I would definitely take another class with this instructor.? Newbery Medal: Past, Present and Future ?I thank K.T. and my classmates for helping me learn the ropes. It was a positive experience and I will try to register for more classes in the future.? ?I did really love the Moodle interface, having never taken an online course I had very low expectations--and I was very pleasantly surprised by how nice it was.? Reading Instruction and Children?s Books ?It is great to be able to take a course relevant to my job without having to take a college course - and learn the info I need to help my patrons.? ?I appreciated being able to take instruction online and especially having the course be flexible for time. It would have been very difficult to take one that required a lot of regular real-time sessions, because I work full-time in the library.? ?The instructor put together great resources (online, PowerPoints, and pdfs) that I will find very helpful in the future (as well as I did in the class).? The four main topics being (1) differences between fiction and non-fiction, (2) locating materials in alphabetical order, (3) proper ways to remove and replace books from shelves, and (4) proper handling of materials once checked out from the library. It's worked like gangbusters for groups of 15 - 250 students. If interested, please find the program breakdown attached, and as always feel free to change and adapt as you see fit. What I'd like to do is create trilogies of this program- and for progressing grades- in order to have once-a-semester contact with students who we might never get to see otherwise. Additionally, my intention to having it only for certain grades is to create a special rite of passage feel to the presentations for the classes. I'm thinking something along the lines of this: 1st grade: Basic library skills 1, 2, 3 3rd grade: Basic library site search and request skills, basic database and internet search skills 5th/6th grade: Intermediate library site search and request skills, intermediate database and internet search skills, basic reference skills High school(?): Advanced library site search and request skills, intermediate to advanced database use, intermediate to advanced reference skills If anyone finds helping create some or all of these programs intriguing, I'd love to start up a group to begin production of simple lesson plans to share with the Oregon library community. If there are enough Portland-area librarians who would like to be a part of this, I'd be happy to coordinate an informal group meeting over food/drinks. I'll also begin creating a blog or wiki so everybody can share success stories. Thanks for your time, and have a great week. Sincerely, Patrick L. I thought children's and teen librarians may be interested in reading the latest report from America's Children on Key National Indicators of Well-being (of 0-17 year olds). Here are some things I learned from the highlights that got me thinking about library services to children and teens: * The racial and ethnic diversity of America's Children has grown dramatically in the last three decades and will continue to grow. In 2023, fewer than half of all children are projected to be White, non-Hispanic. o Will the % of materials in library collections representing races and ethnicities be equal to the actual % of those races and ethnicities in the community in 2023 (which is only 12 years away!) * About 6 percent of school-age children spoke a language other than English at home and lived in a linguistically isolated household in which all persons age 14 or over speak a language other than English at home and no person age 14 or over speaks English "Very well." o How is the library providing services to children and families who speak languages other than English? * In 2009, 21 percent of all children ages 0-17 (15.5 million) lived in poverty. o What partnerships and/or outreach services is the library implementing to reach kids in poverty who may need our resources the most? * In 2009, the adolescent birth rate was 20.1 per 1,000 adolescents ages 15-17, lower than the 2008 rate of 21.7 and the 2007 rate of 22.1 per 1,000. o How is the library providing services to pregnant and parenting teens? * In an average week during the 2010 school year, 9 percent of youth ages 16-19 were neither enrolled in school nor working. Black, non-Hispanic youth and Hispanic youth are more likely to be neither enrolled in school nor working than White, non-Hispanic youth. o What partnerships and outreach services is the library implementing to engage unemployed, high-school dropouts?
