All entries must be postmarked January 6, 2012 Letters About Literature is a national reading and writing contest. Students write letters to an author explaining how that author's book changed their way of thinking about the world or themselves. There are three competition levels: Level I for 4th-6th graders, Level II for 7th-8th graders, and Level III for 9th-12th graders. Oregon's three winners (one from each competition level) will go on to compete nationally. Entry forms and guidelines are now available online: * If you are submitting several letters for the students you work with, please use the class set entry form and guidelines. * If you are distributing entry forms and guidelines to students directly, please distribute the individual entry form and guidelines. Librarians and teachers can download and print posters, bookmarks, and stickers to distribute to your students and patrons. Lesson plans and an outline connecting Letters About Literature to national language arts and reading standards are available online. In 2011 over 900 students in Oregon entered the contest, and 1 in 11 of them received cash prizes or gift certificates to a bookstore. These prizes are made possible through support from the Oregon Reading Association, Oregon Association of School Libraries, and the Oregon Library Association's Children Services Division and Young Adult network. At the national level 6 winners and 12 honorable mentions will be selected. National winners receive a $500 Target gift certificate and a $10,000 grant to donate to the public or school library of the winner's choice. Honorable mentions receive a $100 Target gift certificate and a $1,000 grant to donate to the public or school library of their choice. This is the first time in our 78 year history these beautiful marionettes have been offered to libraries on the West Coast. Imagine...taking your favorite fairy tale and having the pages of the story come to life in front of your very eyes. The Stevens Puppets (a standard in American marionettes) has been producing colorful and exciting marionette productions of the best-loved fairy tales and children's stories since 1933. Being the oldest and most watched puppet company in North America, Stevens Puppets boasts such unforgettable marionette stories as "Beauty and the Beast", "Rumplestiltskin", "The Wizard of Oz", "Pinocchio", "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow", "The Sleeping Beauty", "Cinderella" and "Aladdin". All of the original marionettes have been hand-carved of wood. All the shows have also been hand costumed, hand painted scenery, hand-made props all to enhance these wonderful puppets. Our marionettes have been touring for decades to libraries and schools and are regarded by many as some of the very best marionettes in the world! Each story is 45 minutes in length, making it perfect for children of any age, even 1 and 2 year olds through teenagers. Yes, you read it correctly; I said 1 and 2 year olds through teenagers. Our stories are so captivating that no matter the age of the child, they will sit spellbound watching these "little people" enact a play in front of their eyes, and never lose focus of the marionettes. Each story has a moral or life skill woven cleverly and discretely throughout the story. Every performance triumphantly ends with a demonstration of the marionettes by the puppeteer. We also guarantee every performance. If you are not 100% satisfied, we do not expect payment. Stevens Puppets' performances come complete with a sound system, lights, stage, scenery, puppets and everything necessary for our performance. We do request an electrical outlet. Our fee schedule is very simple. One performance of Stevens Puppets is $295.00. We don't charge for mileage. We will request a hotel accommodation in addition as we are travelling through. If a library requests more than 1 performance in the same location on the same day, every performance after the first shall be $150.00 each. If a library system books several branches, there will be a discount on each as well. Thank you for considering Stevens Puppets. You can also visit our web site by going to www.stevenspuppets.com. Once there, you will be treated to myriad marionette pictures as well as a ton of information. You can also "LIKE" us on Facebook. I just watched an amazing brain development video clip from yesterday's NBC's Education Nation Summit. Here is a link to the video, Dr. Patricia Kuhl and Dr. Andrew Meltzoff on Brain Power: Why Early Learning Matters: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21134540/vp/44672754#44672754 (Note, there will be a short commercial before the real video plays.) It is well worth watching the entire 20 minute video, but if you don't have that much time start the video at the 9 minute marker. You will see and learn about two areas in the brain involved with listening and understanding and talking, socializing, and reading. You will see in real time a 9 month baby's brain activity change when they hear someone talk to them. In the last 5 minutes you will see a 45 minutes old new born respond through imitation-demonstrating that we are social learners within the first hour of life. Also, if you're an Alan Alda fan like me... you're in for a treat! There is a short editorial/opinion piece written on the summit that is an interesting read whether or not you agree with the author. Here is the link to the short article: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/susan-ochshorn/early-learning-brain-deve_b_1002779.html Here are a few points from the article that got my brain working, thinking about what we librarians already know about brain development and how we are using it in our work directly with children and educating parents and care providers. It also got me thinking about Oregon's state-level changes around education, especially early learning. * Gregory W.Capelli... [said] "Our children have returned to the classroom, and they're ready to learn,"... I'm not sure where this former research analyst for Credit Suisse got his data... but the last time I checked, only a handful of states were even doing readiness assessments. Moreover, estimates of children unprepared to enter the school house door range from a third to as high as 60 percent, the case in Ohio, for example. * None of the governors [at the summit] mentioned readiness. They talked of squeezing more value out of the education dollar, increasing accountability, setting the bar higher for standardized tests, charter schools and choice, reducing the ranks of college freshmen in need of remediation. * "If the U.S. is serious about the commitment to making transformative change in our K-12 educational system," [Patricia Kuhl] said, "we will have to take seriously the images you see today." [in this video http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21134540/vp/44672754#44672754] * the images couldn't be more concrete evidence of brain-building. The rapid proliferation of synapses. How they're strengthened and pruned through stimulating interaction, including talking, singing, and reading. [Hey, that sounds a lot like the focus of Every Child Ready to Read 2nd Edition!] * "Children who show lots of activity in response to words and sentences early on develop words faster until the age of three, and their reading readiness is better at the age of five." [said Kuhl] Katie Anderson, Library Development Services * Youth Services Consultant * Oregon Center for the Book Coordinator * Oregon State Library, 250 Winter St. NE, Salem, OR 97301 katie.anderson at state.or.us, 503-378-2528 -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Are you already dreaming of programs for Dream Big READ! Summer Reading 2012? Hopefully you've dug in and thought of ideas that will work with the 2013's Dig Into Reading slogan. As a reminder, these can be full blown programs, quick ideas for games or crafts, reproducible handouts such as matching, fill in the blank, crossword puzzles, and decorating ideas. Don't forget to include programs for those who work with "underground" readers living in shelters, group homes, juvenile detention centers, and other out of the mainstream places in different settings from the public library. I've attached the chapter headings and ideas from Patti Sinclair, manual editor. We want to concentrate on tweens but not forget the primary grades. This is the first time we've done an "underground" theme - it should be fun. Please send your ideas to trishsinclair at sbcglobal.net < mailto:trishsinclair at sbcglobal.net > or to me and I'll forward them on. The deadline for submissions is November 1, 2011. Thanks - your creativity is appreciated! Gayle All Oregon public, volunteer, and tribal libraries are members of the Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP), and receive a free summer reading manual. To get the most out of your membership, create an account on the CSLP website ( http://www.cslpreads.org/ ) and you will be able to access additional summer reading resources. Last week Victoria Campbell, youth librarian at Beaverton City Library, and I had an email exchange about their first use of the Every Child Ready to Read 2nd Edition (ECRR 2nd Ed). It wasn't perfect, but there was so much interest from the community they had to add a second session! With Victoria's permission, I'm sharing the email she sent me about their experience and what they would do differently next time-there will definitely be a next time! Have any of you tried ECRR 2nd Edition? If so, how did it go? Any advice? For those of you who don't have the new curriculum yet: * It is available to purchase from ALA at: http://www.alastore.ala.org/detail.aspx?ID=3404 * It will be available to check out from the State Library soon. I will send out the info via this listserv announcing it. Any way between the 2 of them we had 66 attendees! We are excited to try out the others next year! It does need to still be tweaked a little because it was a little too much talking with those wiggle toddler and preschoolers present. Our numbers for the ECRR1 workshops had been going down, down, down so this was refreshing. We did have some thoughts on how to improve the workshop though (From my co-presenters - Sarah and Jennifer). * Add lots of short songs and finger plays to focus the group after activities and long dialogs. * Give plenty of time for families to interact with books-we used the butterfly example from the workshop and the parents really got into it-reading the words and talking about the pictures, and because the parents were so involved the children were, too. It was a really nice moment of the program, and gave us time to clean up the previous interactive lab. * Because of the number of children and the short amount of time we had for the measuring activity children took turns standing at the wall and we put a piece of masking tape on the wall to mark their height and labeled it with the child's age. Then we used a tape measure only the tallest and the shortest to test our hypothesis. * The activities were the favorite part of the program, the long bouts of talking were the least favorite part. * Talk less than the script (talking points) * Do more hands on activities (we did 2, I'd suggest at least 3). People loved the ice activity. This sometimes misunderstood type of book is a full-length story told in paneled, sequential, graphic format and it is different from book-length collections of comic strips or wordless picture books. In recognition of the importance of these books for children, the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) directed its Quicklists Consulting Committee to create a list of titles for public librarians serving elementary school-age children (kindergarten through 8th grade). The result is the Children?s Graphic Novel Core Collection from ALSC. ?This core list will guide librarians in selecting the best graphic novels to meet children?s needs,? said Mary Fellows, board president. ?Graphic novels are wildly popular with kids, positively impact children?s visual literacy skill development and are an essential part of 21st century library collections.? Selecting graphic novels for library collections can be challenging for librarians who may feel that they don?t have sufficient knowledge to identify appropriate books for different ages, or may be simply overwhelmed by the number of titles available. To help with the selection process, the committee developed a ?core? list for public libraries to use when starting or maintaining a children's graphic novel collection. The list includes classics as well as new titles that have been widely recommended and well-reviewed and books that have popular appeal as well as critical acclaim. The committee identified the best books that are currently available and will update the list at least annually to add the best of new releases and remove titles that have gone out of print. ALSC, a division of the American Library Association (ALA), is the world?s largest organization dedicated to the support and enhancement of library service to children. With a network of more than 4,000 children?s and youth librarians, literature experts, publishers and educational faculty, ALSC is committed to creating a better future for children through libraries. Every Child Ready to Read @ your library (2nd Ed.). Chicago, IL: American Library Association. This is the updated version of the original Every Child Ready to Read @ your library early literacy curriculum. Significant changes include: * 4 of the workshops (education sessions) are for caregivers and children together, but there is still 1 workshop for caregivers only if the old model worked for you. * 1 of the caregiver and child workshops integrates science! * 1 workshop for you to educate the rest of your library staff about early literacy so they are better prepared to provide library services to young children and their caregivers. * 1 workshop is for you to present to staff at local organizations and agencies that may want to partner with your library on providing early literacy workshops to their clients. * The curriculum has switched from the 6 skills children need to develop (print motivation, letter knowledge, etc.) and now focuses on 5 activities that caregivers can do with their children to develop the 6 skills. This means there is no jargon that was sometimes a barrier to reaching less-educated/high-risk families. * The early literacy research that the 1st Edition was based on is still valid so you may continue to use it and you can integrate what you liked from the original curriculum into the 2nd Edition to create workshops that work best for you and your patrons. * The introduction of research around constrained skills (e.g. once you know the names of the letters, you know them and there aren't more letter names to learn) and unconstrained skills (e.g. vocabulary development continues throughout our lifetime, there are always more words to learn even in adulthood). * The 2nd Edition is designed to be a turn-key curriculum that doesn't require the presenter to go through training-although it certainly helps to have a good understanding of the research. When you check this kit out you may distribute the bookmarks and brochures to the people attending your workshop-the State Library will order replacements after you return the kit. Further explanation and details are below, but I wanted to note that there are several ways you could promote this at the public library: * Create a display of some of the books on the recommended reading list, which was updated over the summer. * Post about the program on your website. * Have printed reading lists and/or reading logs on hand. * Promote the program with the homeschooling community. * Focus a storytime or two on books that deal with money or finances. Sponsored by the State Treasurer and the Oregon College Savings Plan, it aims to promote literacy and financial education among K-5 elementary students in Oregon. http://www.ost.state.or.us/Read/About.htm As part of RII, your elementary school library will receive two free books: Pigs Will be Pigs: Fun With Math and Money by Amy Axelrod and Rock, Brock, and the Savings Shock by Sheila Bair. Homeschoolers and students in private elementary schools are welcome to participate, but they do not receive donated books. [cid:image006.jpg at 01CC97EB.56735710] [cid:image007.jpg at 01CC97EB.56735710] The biggest program component is encouraging kids to read or be read to, and the books should relate to money and finances. Students must read at least 3 books from the recommended reading list, and they will track their time in increments of 20 (read-to-me kids) or 40 (independent readers) minutes. Participants may fill out a reading log up to 10 times, and log counts as an entry for the Oregon College Savings Plan drawing. For resources such as curriculum tie-ins and the recommended reading list, visit http://www.ost.state.or.us/Read/Teachers.htm. FYI, the reading list was updated this year. The second page of the reading log has a detailed explanation of how to participate. http://www.ost.state.or.us/Read/Reading_Log.pdf For students to be eligible for one of the fifty $500 college savings plan scholarships, their entries must be received by March 31, 2012. http://www.ost.state.or.us/Read/Register.asp (Did you know that the winners' school also receives $500?)
