I just received the following announcement of upcoming webinars in July through November. These webinars are a great professional development opportunity for children's library staff who don't have a lot of time or resources. The webinars are one or two hour interactive online sessions that you take participate in at your desk which means no additional time or money is required for traveling. Sessions are $55 per person or $195 for groups. If you can't make the live session, a few webinars are archived so you can watch them whenever works for you and available to purchase for $25. The down side is that archived webinars aren't interactive so you can't ask questions of the presenter or 'talk' with fellow participants, the plus side is that you can still learn great information on your own schedule. These are some of the questions that constantly present themselves as we wade through the pool of emerging technologies. For libraries that do not have staff dedicated to digital initiatives, deciding on which tools to use and how to effectively use them can be challenging. This session aims to provide practical insight into understanding emerging technologies and tips for identifying and implementing relevant tools and services. Reading for Healthy Families (RFHF) was a statewide early literacy training project for Healthy Start/Healthy Families Oregon home visitors and Oregon children's librarians that took place from 2008-2011. RFHF adapted Every Child Ready to Read @ your library, a national evidence-based early literacy curriculum, to be appropriate for home visitors to use with individual families in their homes while still being appropriate for group presentations at libraries. The final evaluation reports on the impact of early literacy education sessions on families, early literacy services provided by participants, and local partnerships among participants from different programs. If you or one of your coworkers use Every Child Ready to Read, you may be interested to know the following results in particular. These and other results presented in this report may be useful for writing grants to fund early literacy projects at your library, developing partnerships with early childhood professionals in your community, or to advocate for maintaining (or increasing!) funding of your current early literacy projects. * Participating families reported reading with their children significantly more often than non-participating families. * 67% of participating families compared to 60% of non-participating families reported asking their child what will happen next in a story when reading together. * Participating families reported reading books, using the library, telling stories, talking about new words, and relating books to their real life to improve the learning environment for their young children significantly more than non-participating families. * 97% of participating families compared to 96% of non-participating families reported pointing out and talking about picture in a book when reading together. * 84% of participating families compared to 74% of non-participating families reported that their child pretends to read along when reading together; and 89% of participating families compared to 80% of non-participating families reported that their child participates in reading by asking questions, turning pages, or acting out parts of a book. * 57% of participating families compared to 51% of non-participating families have a library card for their child, 23% of participating families compared to 16% of non-participating families attended a storytime at the library last month, and 43% of participating families compared to 32% of non-participating families checked materials out from the library for their child. We learned that while many Oregon libraries are interested, a significant number are not. Therefore the State Library, CSD, and OYAN have decided not to pursue a statewide contract for summer reading software. Due to the fact that many libraries are interested in summer reading software and may be able to form a consortium to get a better price, I have scheduled a webinar with one summer reading software vendor for any of you who are interested-details below. After this webinar, interested libraries will be responsible for any next steps. If some libraries are interested in exploring a consortium, then they will have to take the lead on facilitating that effort. Libraries will also be responsible for scheduling webinars or product demos with other vendors of summer reading software. Evanced Summer Reader webinar October 3, 2012 2:00pm-3:00pm This webinar will give libraries across Oregon the opportunity to get a general overview of a whole suite of products to help keep their libraries at the center of their communities. Used by thousands of libraries, the Summer Reader, Events and Room Reserve software ensure your patrons know what's happening and are able to sign up for reading programs, events, and even request rooms online or via a mobile device. Learn about the new products just coming into the market: Peek-a-Book Total Access provides high-end video teasers of the best of children's literature, and MarkIt is a book sale management system to truly make your book sales a solid revenue stream. An OLA Hotline article about the proclamation suggests a ideas to get your gears turning: Governor Kitzhaber Proclaims October Information Literacy Month in Oregon! It is my pleasure to announce that on June 26th, 2012, Governor Kitzhaber proclaimed October to be Information Literacy month in Oregon. In addition to wide support from the library community, this initiative also enjoys the support of writing and English instructors. The National Forum on Information Literacy is leading an effort to encourage all states and U.S. territories to submit requests to their governors? offices to proclaim October as Information Literacy Month. With a signed proclamation in hand, Oregon is ahead of many other states in the IL proclamation initiative. Thank you to all who worked on drafting and endorsing the proclamation, and in particular State Librarian MaryKay Dahlgreen for coordinating the effort and shepherding the request through to the Governor?s office. In anticipation of outreach in and around October, the OLA Library Development and Legislative Committee (LDLC) is encouraging Oregon libraries of all types to gather patron stories of what the library means to them. Personal stories are a powerful way to describe our work to library stakeholders, especially when combined with evidence-based data reflecting our service. The LDLC is also encouraging libraries to send stakeholders targeted invitations to visit the library for a first-hand look at the dynamic role libraries play in our communities. Let?s gather our data, collect the stories and use them in October to celebrate our first statewide Information Literacy Month.
