Message-ID: <09EC7696CCFB714D8EA69C2A5BFFDFD232AE8E20@MBX2.internal.thecityofnewport.net> It's now March, which means that people can officially vote for their favorite Oregon Reader's Choice Award book. Please encourage your students and your patrons to vote for their favorite ORCA book. As long as they have read 2 or more books in any of the 3 divisions, then they are allowed to vote in that division. Since there were a number of crossover books, any student who competed in OBOB is eligible for vote in the ORCA. People have until April 2nd to vote. (We extended the voting 2 days because of Spring Break.) Please collect the votes at your school or library. There are paper ballots that you can download from the ORCA website (http://www.olaweb.org/orca), or you can create your own. You also could do an electronic ballot, if you would rather. I have made one to share at http://bit.ly/orcaballot2013. Please make sure that you choose "Make a copy" first, so it becomes yours before you start using it. Once you have the votes for your building all tallied, please submit them using this Google form: http://bit.ly/orca2013 Thank you SO much for promoting reading through the Oregon Reader's Choice Award. In April we will announce the winners, plus the titles for the 2014 ORCA Divisions. I just learned about the following online training opportunities in March - August sponsored by ALA's Association for Library Services to Children (ALSC). "One of ALSC's goals to provide children's librarians with timely, educational and affordable professional development opportunities. Because life in a library moves fast, ALSC's webinars are the perfect solution for someone who wants and needs educational information but doesn't have a lot of time or resources. These short (one to two hour) interactive sessions taking place in Adobe Connect give librarians and library support staff the opportunity to learn right at their desks. The only necessary tools are a computer and the internet. At $45 a session for ALSC members, $55 for non-members and $195 for groups, webinars are highly affordable, and because they're interactive, students get the benefit of sharing ideas with one another and networking from afar." --from the ALSC website. Past webinars have been recorded and are available for only $25 at: http://www.ala.org/alsc/webinararchive Questions? Video demonstrations, articles, online resources and course discussions direct students as they learn how to successfully deliver the various elements of bilingual storytimes, either on their own or with a bilingual community partner. Participants will discover new books, rhymes, songs, plans and resources that they can immediately put to use in their bilingual storytime programs. Learning Objectives: * Students will learn how to select and use the following components in bilingual storytime: books, songs, rhymes, fingerplays, and stories for telling aloud. * Students will experiment with incorporating bilingual materials into their existing storytime programs. * Students will select books and other materials they can use to increase inclusion of Latino culture and the Spanish language in their English storytime programs. * Students will develop strategies for working with bilingual community partners to present and market bilingual storytime. * Student will develop an increased understanding of the early literacy and school readiness needs of Latino children. * Students will articulate how bilingual storytime supports the early literacy and school readiness needs of Latino children, and identify online resources for sharing early literacy and school readiness information with Spanish-speaking parents. * Students will each develop two bilingual storytime plans. Katie Cunningham is a library consultant and training specialist whose work focuses on improving library services to Latino and Spanish-speaking children and families. She previously worked as the first Spanish Program Specialist for the Columbus Metropolitan Library and as a Children's Librarian at the uniquely bilingual Village Branch of the Lexington Public Library. Below is the press release. I would like to thank the following individuals for their hard work on this year's Lampman Committee: Mary Parra Josie Hanneman Krist Obrist Ann Dondero Deeda Chamberlain Nancy Peate Fran Davis Kathy Street Becky Pearson Eila Overcash Kim Olson-Charles Carol Reich Carrie Bushman Press Release For over 40 years, Nell Colburn has been a joyful, calm, and effervescent presence in the Oregon library world. She is rightly called "The Book Fairy" by children in Multnomah County who have had her share stories, rhymes and songs with them. Her goal of putting not just any book, but really great books in the hands of children resulted in her co-coordinating the Raising a Reader program in Multnomah County for many years. The Raising a Reader program partners with over 400 early childcare classrooms and reaches approximately 40,000 children, parents, teachers, and caregivers every year. Nell has also been the story time training coordinator for Multnomah County for over ten years, providing library staff with the tools and training needed for consistent excellence in story times throughout Multnomah County. In 2009, Nell served on the Caldecott Committee and together with her committee helped select the best illustrated book of the year, The House in the Night, illustrated by Beth Krommes. Nell also co-wrote an early literacy column for School Library Journal for over nine years, reaching a national audience of librarians. Nell has a high standard of excellence with the distinction of being the easily recognized and remembered 'Book Fairy', bringing stories to life for children and their caregivers. It looks to be a bigger time commitment than I am able to give, but I will definitely be able to give ideas and opinions to Doug as the process unfolds (poor Doug). Best wishes, Jessica R. In the upcoming year, the time commitments for SDLAC meetings and other outside work will be higher than normal. We are currently in the process of a new procurement for databases, as the current contract will end in mid 2014. I expect that SDLAC members will be very involved in evaluating the proposals we get from our RFP request from late summer though early fall 2013. This will likely involve multiple meetings, and some outside time to evaluate proposals. After a proposal is chosen and a contract is negotiated, the workload will be more normal ... which primarily entails 2-3 meetings per year. I wanted to also let you know that we do have a nomination from CCRLS for the Resource Sharing Network position, Doug Yancey. You are of course still welcome to be nominated, but I thought you may want to know this. We do not yet have any nominations for the Public Library serving over 100,000 position, and you would qualify for that position being from Salem Public. I hope this answers your question, and please let me know if I can provide any further information. Thanks! The PYM Cooperative, of which my library is a member, was considering nominating me for that position, however, the first question my manager asked was the time commitment. Could you give me a little more information about the commitment required for that position? Thanks so much! Jessica R. By registering their D?a programs held throughout the year in the national registry, libraries build a national database that showcases all types and sizes of D?a programming. The information will display on the website, in both the map and database format, allowing you to share program information with other librarians and the public interested in learning more about D?a programs happening around the country. Libraries that register will also receive D?a stickers and bookmarks (while supplies last). ALSC also is pleased to announce this year's slogan D?a: Diversity in Action. D?a is a nationally recognized initiative that emphasizes the importance of literacy for all children from all backgrounds. It is a daily commitment to linking children and their families to diverse books, languages and cultures. "As the most important celebration for multicultural children's library services, D?a truly is Diversity in Action," said ALSC President Carolyn Brodie. "We're proud to offer this registration as a way of promoting local events on a national level. With every registration, we're showcasing the reach of D?a, allowing ALSC to expand the experience and support of this great initiative." "Literacy is essential in democracy and what a diverse country we are," said D?a founder Pat Mora. "Those of us lucky enough to be readers and wanting to share bookjoy can help link all children to books, languages and cultures through D?a, day by day, d?a pro d?a. Promote your April D?a celebration on this helpful ALSC registry. Help illustrate and generate D?a excitement nationally." Libraries can register at the D?a website, where ALSC also offers a resource guide, booklist and logos for download. The D?a celebration was founded in 1996 by children's book author Pat Mora, who proposed conceptually linking the exisiting El D?a del Ni?o with literacy. The founding partner of D?a is REFORMA, the National Association to Promote Library and Information Services to Latinos and the Spanish-Speaking. For more information on D?a, please visit http://dia.ala.org. ALSC is the world's largest organization dedicated to the support and enhancement of library service to children.
