Language Development >From Eye On Early Education, Strategies for Children By Alyssa Haywoode August 5, 2014 This short blog article has some good information about a new study around the importance of babies babbling and the role parents play in encouraging their baby to babble. This isn?t necessarily new information, just more solid data to support previous studies and research in this area. Here are the main points from the article that you may want to share with parents, caregivers, and other early childhood professionals: ? ?The results [of this study] emphasize the importance of talking to kids during social interactions even if they aren?t talking back yet.? ? ?The study has social implications, suggesting that the slow and exaggerated parentese speech ? ?Hiiiii! How are youuuuu?? ? may actually prompt infants to try to synthesize utterances themselves and imitate what they heard, uttering something like ?Ahhh bah bah baaah.?? ? ?Parentese is very exaggerated, and when infants hear it, their brains may find it easier to model the motor movements necessary to speak.? If this topic is of interest to you, you may also want to read the study itself. If not, save this email so you have these resources at your finger tips when you write your next grant application or need statistics to build a case for programs and services. More sources for statistics are below. A few things to note from the 2014 report: * In 1990 31% of children were of color, in 2012 47% of children were of color nationwide. How do our libraries reflect this change? * 66% of fourth graders were not proficient in reading in 2013 nationwide. How are our libraries helping these children specifically? * 35% of children live in single-parent families nationwide. How are our libraries making sure single parents can visit the library and participate in programs? * How does Oregon rank? o Oregon ranks 30th among the states in overall child well-being. o Oregon ranks 40th among the states in economic well-being. o Oregon ranks 35th among the states in education. o Oregon ranks 7th among the states in health. o Oregon ranks 22nd among the states in family and community. Hello! Below are my go-to sources for statistics on literacy (and all education topics PreK-12). These are great for grant applications, strategic planning/outcome based planning and evaluation, reports to key stake holders, and advocacy materials. * Children First for Oregon: You can view statistics for the state as a whole and by individual county so you can get statistics specific to your region and compare them with the state statistics. * Oregon Department of Education: Reports: Allows you to get school district level statistics on Reading & Lit. Click on 'Assessment', look under 'Results-District and School' and click on 'Search Test Results (2004-2011)' and you'll pull up a page that allows you to create detailed reports by year, district, population, and subject. * OregonLive.com: Your Schools: Provides similar information as ODE. There aren't as many options for creating detailed reports as ODE, but their reports are more user-friendly snapshots of statistics. * National Center for Education Statistics: They have tons of statistics, but their 'Fast Facts' page is pretty easy to use. Click on 'Assessments', then click on 'Reading' and you should find national statistics. You can also find state-by-state ranking under 'Assessments' if you are interested in learning how Oregon compares. * Kids Count Data Center: They also have a lot of statistics, but you can 'build a custom indicator report for your community' which includes only the data you want to see. In addition, the website allows you to compare this nationally collected data with similar data collected locally via Children First for Oregon. Enjoy! Why did the author choose this example? What's important here? Do I understand what I am reading? In contrast, struggling readers, and those with disabilities, are not likely to pose questions before, during, or after reading. These students, in particular, need direct instruction and practice in self-questioning. As students develop this skill, they will become better at reading comprehension and will build the skills they need to be college and career ready. The specific ELA Common Core State Standards related to self-questioning are: * CCSS.ELA-Literacy.CCRA.R.1 Read closely to determine what the text says explicitly and to make logical inferences from it; cite specific textual evidence when writing or speaking to support conclusions drawn from the text. * CCSS.ELA-Literacy.CCRA.R.2 Determine central ideas or themes of a text and analyze their development; summarize the key supporting details and ideas. * CCSS.ELA-Literacy.CCRA.R.10 Read and comprehend complex literary and informational texts independently and proficiently. Read the rest of the article here: http://www.ldonline.org/article/Self-Questioning_to_Support_Reading_Comprehension What can library staff do? * Model self-questioning during storytimes so young children can start developing this strategy before they learn to read. * When parents ask questions about their struggling reader, say something like "I recently read an article about self-questioning which is one strategy for improving reading comprehension. Would you like me to print it for you?" * Model self-questioning during book clubs for children and teens. * During book clubs, talk with children and teens about the types of questions they can ask themselves while they are reading as a way to prepare for the next book club meeting. * Any other ideas? This should be a great resources for libraries interested in maker spaces and/or LEGO? programs for children 4-6 years old when it becomes available?it?s not on their website yet. They also announced that they will be distributing physical Junior Maker Space toolkits, including LEGO? bricks, to 15 libraries per state capitol. Since Salem does not have 15 libraries, I asked Joanna Ison of ALA?s Association for Library Services to Children for guidance. Based on that guidance, the toolkits will be distributed to 15 of the 16 libraries in the Chemeketa Cooperative Regional Library Service. This honors the intent of their project by keeping the kits near the state capitol. These 15 libraries serve relatively diverse communities in Oregon. They should be able to share with the rest of the Oregon library community how the Junior Maker Space toolkits work in rural towns, with English language learners, and in small, medium, and large libraries. The Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) and LEGO Systems, Inc. are working together to bring Junior Maker Spaces to libraries across the country. This project will focus on giving children ages 4 to 6 areas to make and create in their local libraries. Beginning in August, librarians can download a free, digital toolkit with information and inspiration to host Junior Maker Sessions via the ALSC website. In addition, 750+ libraries nationwide (15 per state capitol) will receive a physical toolkit to host ongoing Junior Maker sessions in children?s reading areas. Each toolkit will include over 10,000 LEGO? bricks, an inspirational poster, activity guide and salient academic insights from the Cultures of Creativity report. Additionally, the partners will co-host Junior Make sessions, as recently held at the Washington, D.C., Mini Maker Faire, in 20 libraries. For further inspiration please watch the Junior Maker video. ?Children?s librarians have always spearheaded programs and activities that foster young children?s development and as enthusiasm swells for libraries as community maker spaces, it is important that we continue and expand appropriate hands-on experiences for young children,? said Starr LaTronica, immediate past president of ALSC. ?We?re thrilled that through our ongoing LEGO partnership we?re able to provide digital and physical tools and inspiration that will allow librarians to deliver age-appropriate ?make? experiences to children.? ?Creativity is innate in children across cultures and backgrounds. However, sustaining creativity is universally challenging for parents, teachers and governmental institutions,? said Bo Stjerne Thomsen, director of research and learning, The LEGO Foundation and co-author Cultures of Creativity. ?We are failing our children if we do not recognize the crucial role of playing, making and sharing in the development of both the individual human being, and the innovative society.? The Summer Food Program reported at a meeting I attended last week that participation in the free summer lunch program is up 10% this year compared to participation last year at this time. This morning on Oregon Public Broadcasting's morning news there was a piece that did a great job describing the problem getting eligible hungry youth to participate in the summer food program. One of the key factors for getting youth to participate in the summer food program is providing activities and programs. Many summer food programs don't have the money or resources to provide activities or program, this is a gap that libraries can and are filling! As you know, youth must eat food to get the energy they need to read and learn. You can read the story or listen to it online. As of August 8th the Oregon College Savings Plan has received 4,654 Fuzz Boom Save! entries. In an effort to promote summer reading at public libraries and saving for college beyond the 15 sweepstakes winners, the Oregon College Savings Plan also sponsors a KATU media partnership and a summer reading performer at legally established public libraries serving fewer than 10,000. Libraries with winners receive $500 to spend on their next summer reading program. * Watch the State Librarian on the third AM Northwest spot. * View the KATU Fizz Boom Save webpage. * View the Oregon College Savings Plan's Fizz Boom Save webpage. We now have access to National Geographic Kids (NGK) on OSLIS. What is National Geographic Kids? National Geographic Kids is a Gale database aimed at K-8 students. It includes access to National Geographic Kids magazine from 2009 to the present (3 month embargo), 200 National Geographic Kids books, and 500 kid-friendly and downloadable images. As the Gale NGK webpage points out, the database is full of authoritative nonfiction content, aka informational text, that supports Common Core and other standards. National Geographic Kids Webpage: http://www.cengagesites.com/Literature/776/national-geographic-for-research-libraries/ng-kids/ How Do I Access NGK? All statewide databases - the Gale suite plus LearningExpress Library - are available to the Oregon K-12 community via the Find Information pages on OSLIS. NGK is featured on both the elementary and secondary skins (versions). Remember that we have access to more Gale databases than we can feature. To see the full list of Gale databases, or common menu, click on PowerSearch on any OSLIS Find Information page. When prompted for a login, use the same credentials you use to access other Gale databases. If you do not know your district's or private school's Gale login, please ask me for it. You have a couple of options for getting familiar with National Geographic Kids. There are two short tutorials, one called Basics and the other Searching. Also, there will be two National Geographic Kids webinars just for Oregon school library staff and educators. As time permits, the trainer will also explain how to use the new Kids InfoBits interface. The first webinar is on Friday, September 5th at 8:30 am Pacific, and the other is on September 29th at 3:30 pm Pacific. One session will be recorded and available for later viewing. I will post more details about the Oregon webinars later. Please promote the learning opportunities with pertinent teachers in your building or district. Tutorials: http://solutions.cengage.com/gale-training/on-demand-tutorials/#N Why Do We Now Have Access to NGK? On behalf of the Statewide Database Licensing Program and after an RFP and evaluation process with the Statewide Database Licensing Advisory Council, the State Library just renewed the Gale contract. As part of the renewal and at no extra cost, we now have access to National Geographic Kids, Business Insights: Essentials was upgraded to Business Insights: Global, and over 250 ebooks were added to Gale Virtual Reference Library. You may have read the article about the new Gale content in the August issue of Letter to Libraries Online (LTLO), the State Library's newsletter. This announcement is available on the OSLIST archive at http://oslis.org/oslissupport/announcements/2014/august-13-2014. If you have questions, please ask. Thanks, Jen P.S. Kitzhaber, M.D.] NEWS RELEASE AUGUST 19, 2014 Media Contact: Melissa Navas, 503-378-6496 Rachel Wray, 503-559-1277 Governor Kitzhaber Appoints Megan Irwin Acting Early Learning System Director New Early Learning Policy Director Announced (Salem, OR) - Governor Kitzhaber announced today the appointment of Megan Irwin as Acting Early Learning System Director. Ms. Irwin's appointment follows the retirement of Jada Rupley, whose last day with the Division was August 15. The appointment is immediate. "Megan is an energetic and engaged leader who will foster the talent of both Early Learning Division staff and community leaders who are doing great work," Governor Kitzhaber said. "She will continue to partner with communities and the Legislature to help shape a quality early learning system that follows through on the promise we made to our youngest Oregonians." Ms. Irwin takes over as Acting Director after holding key leadership positions in the Early Learning Division in which she oversaw policy and programs, managed the state's Race to the Top Early Learning Challenge grant, and supported the creation of cross-sector early learning hubs. Ms. Irwin double majored in journalism and mass communications and in political science at Arizona State University. She began her career as a journalist in Phoenix, Arizona, focusing on issues related to children, families, and immigrants. As part of a team, she is a two-time winner of the Payne Award for Ethics in Journalism and has also received multiple Arizona Press Club awards for her coverage of vulnerable children and families in the Phoenix-metro area. Ms. Irwin has also worked in education advocacy, overseeing community organizing and family engagement programs in 11 states. She is the proud daughter of two public school teachers. "The Early Learning Division is full of highly qualified, committed individuals with decades of experience working with children and families," Ms. Irwin said. "My job will be to listen, continue to bring alignment and clarity to this complex work, and ensure that everything we do helps to eliminate disparities across the state so that all children and families have the opportunity to succeed." With Ms. Irwin moving into the Acting Director role, David Mandell has been appointed Early Learning Policy and Partnerships Director. Mr. Mandell has been active in early childhood policy in Oregon for close to a decade. He spent seven years as the Policy & Research Director of the Children's Institute, where he focused on such topics as early childhood professional development, kindergarten assessment, and integrating social-emotional development into early childhood services. Mr. Mandell received his Ph.D. in political science from the University of Chicago and most recently served as the Special Advisor on Early Childhood to Oregon Speaker of the House Tina Kotek. The Early Learning Division of the Oregon Department of Education oversees the early learning system, including policies and programs that support stable and attached families and school readiness. The Division was created on July 1, 2013, and is overseen by the Early Learning Council, a 17-member public policy board. ### [Facebook][https://gallery.mailchimp.com/41b11f32beefba0380ee8ecb5/images/spacer.gif][Twitter][https://gallery.mailchimp.com/41b11f32beefba0380ee8ecb5/images/spacer.gif][YouTube][https://gallery.mailchimp.com/41b11f32beefba0380ee8ecb5/images/spacer.gif][Flickr] -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Below is an announcement from the Oregon Registry about a training of trainers for the Early Words curriculum on November 7th in Pendleton. Participating in the training of trainers means you would be able to conduct Early Words training for childcare providers and offer them continuing education credit. What is Early Words? It is an early literacy curriculum based on the same research as the Every Child Ready to Read early literacy curriculum. What?s the difference between Every Child Ready to Read and Early Words? The intended audience and depth of information. ? If you want to provide early literacy training to parents and informal childcare providers who are only responsible for a few children at a time, then the Every Child Ready to Read is more appropriate for your intended audience because it provides the level of information families need to help their children get ready to read. ? If you want to provide early literacy training to childcare providers who are responsible for large groups of children, then Early Words is more appropriate for your intended audience because it provides a higher level of knowledge early childhood professionals need to plan educational programs. As I mentioned both curriculums are based on the same research. Therefore if you have a preference for one curriculum over the other, then you may use that curriculum for both audiences. I?ve used Early Words with parents effectively and Every Child Ready to Read with childcare providers effectively. The more tools you have in your early literacy toolbox the better you will be able to meet the needs of each unique audience. If you are not already in the Oregon Registry Trainer Program, then you will need to apply for the level of trainer you are interested in becoming in addition to the training application. Each level of trainer has a basic application. Click this link to go to the program page http://www.pdx.edu/occd/oregon-registry-trainer-program-6. Ten of the challenged items were retained in the collection, one of those was reclassified from the teen to the adult section, and one was removed from the collection. I encourage you to incorporate this information and/or the titles of the challenged materials in your Banned Books Week displays and activities. Many people may not realize that book banning is not a thing from the past or that attempts to ban books are made every year right here in Oregon. This is a valuable educational opportunity to discuss the nature of the First Amendment-just as we have a right to access these materials in our libraries, we have a right to question whether they are appropriate to include in public collections. * Why might someone find these materials inappropriate? * Why should they remain in the collection? * Is labeling a book an effective way to inform people about content that may not be appropriate for everyone or is it a form of censorship? * What would you do if someone came up to you in your library and said they want you to remove a book from the collection? * Why is a collection development policy the most important line of defense when library materials are challenged? * Does your library have a policy or established procedure for patrons to challenge material? You can find resources that may help you answer these questions at: http://www.oregon.gov/osl/LD/Pages/intellectual.aspx About the OIFC Annual Report Every year the Oregon Intellectual Freedom Clearinghouse (OIFC) publishes a report on challenges to all types of library materials in Oregon. This report provides a landscape of censorship activity in Oregon, and is submitted to ALA's Office of Intellectual Freedom to be included in their report on censorship activity in the United States. The Annual Report is also used by librarians and teachers to help them develop activities for Banned Books Week. The Annual Report is based on challenge reports OIFC receives from all types of Oregon libraries (school, academic, and public). All local libraries are encouraged to report challenges to materials on a voluntary basis. OIFC does not publish names of people, organizations, libraries, and towns identified in challenge reports confidential. I will be compiling the 2015 Annual Report in August 2015. Please submit a separate challenge report for each formal challenge to library materials that occur at your library between July 1, 2014 and June 30, 2015. Reports may be submitted as they are resolved or all together in July 2015. This information is complied to assist Oregon libraries currently facing a challenge as well as providing information that will help you plan Banned Books Week activities. The Annual Report will tell you what books were challenged in Oregon libraries the previous year. The more libraries reporting challenges to OIFC the better OIFC can help you! Please take time to report challenges to OIFC. The accuracy of OIFC's Annual Report and Title Index to Challenges is directly related to the number of Oregon libraries reporting challenges. To report challenges to materials at your library: 1. Download and print the form at http://www.oregon.gov/osl/LD/Pages/intellectual.aspx#Report_Challenges_to_the_State_Library 2. Fill out a challenge report form for each item that went through your library's formal process for dealing with challenges to library material. 3. Mail your completed form(s) to: Oregon State Library c/o Oregon Intellectual Freedom Clearinghouse 250 Winter St. NE Salem, OR 97301 For more information about OIFC visit our website (http://cms.oregon.gov/osl/LD/Pages/intellectual.aspx) or contact the coordinator of OIFC, Katie Anderson, 503-378-2528. PS: Attention School Librarians! Submit reports to OIFC on challenges after they have gone through your school's formal challenge to materials process and a decision to retain, relocate, or remove the title has been officially made. Submit reports on informal challenges to OASL's Intellectual Freedom Committee Chair, currently Leigh Ann Morlock (intellectualfreedom at oasl.olaweb.org). Plan Banned Books Week Activities. ________________________________ Happy Hispanic Heritage Month! Posted: 27 Aug 2014 09:01 PM PDT Ahhh, the fall. A sweet, sweet time for those in charge of booklists, displays, and story times. Back to school and fall books are perennial favorite subjects until it?s time to rediscover the fall and early winter holiday collection. However, if you?re not quite ready to break out your fall books collection, Hispanic Heritage Month is an ideal time to highlight or expand your collection of books that celebrate the diversity of Hispanic cultures. What started as a week-long celebration in 1968 is now a month long observance (September 15-October 15) of Hispanic history, arts, and culture. [marisol] (image taken from author website) Marisol McDonald Doesn?t Match captures the reality of many biracial children in an upbeat and endearing spitfire of a character. Marisol doesn?t see anything weird with mismatches: green polka dots and purple stripes, peanut butter and jelly burritos, or brown skin and red hair are pretty cool in her eyes. When Marisol tries to match, she finds that things are confusing and boring. Thanks to an intuitive teacher, she regains confidence in her unique viewpoint and look. This bilingual story is charmingly illustrated and told through a very realistic child narrator. [papa] (image taken from HarperCollins website) Arthur Dorros and Rudy Gutierrez?s Papa and Me is a loving, gentle, and authentic look at a father-son relationship. Papa is encouraging, wise, and just plain fun to be with. Spanish words are sprinkled throughout the story. (See also Mama and Me by the same author.) [tooth fairy] (image taken from Random House website) As a huge fan of cross-cultural children?s books, The Tooth Fairy Meets El Raton Perez is one of my favorite Latino-oriented picture books. When Miguelito puts his tooth under his pillow and falls asleep, two magical creatures appear in his room to lay claim to his tooth. The Tooth Fairy asserts ownership because Miguelito is in the United States, but El Raton Perez, the tooth-collecting mouse who collects teeth in Latin America and Spain, defends ownership due to family tradition. Thankfully, they both work out a compromise. This is a fun and unique way of presenting a rite of passage in many cultures. [rebozo] (image taken from Random House website) What can you do with a rebozo (a long scarf)? You can accessorize a dress, play hide and seek, keep a grandmother or baby brother warm, use it as a blindford while attempting to burst a pinata?so many things! Not only is this is celebration of a close-knit family, but it?s also a tribute to creativity. (See also What Can You Do With a Paleta? by the same author.) Ramos has addressed this idea in a book that is divided into two parts; children can read about either a girl and her mom or turn it over and meet a father/son pair. The examples of similarities are simple and broad (a furrow in the brow, liking to play soccer), but they will help children draw parallels in their own families. Each straightforward sentence is presented in both English and Spanish. Guti?rrez's cartoon illustrations are friendly, warm, and energetic. A quirky dog appears on most spreads, and its antics add humor to the illustrations. The page instructing youngsters to flip the volume over shows the family members holding hands in a circle, underscoring their love and unity. This gentle picture book will open up conversations in many families.?Susan E. Murray, Glendale Public Library, AZ Un d?a con mis t?as/ A Day with My Aunts by Anil? Bernardo >From School Library Journal Grade 2-4?This story spills over with life, laughter, food, and music. A girl arrives at her aunts' house to spend a Saturday. She's met at the door by T?a Dulce, who soon has her in the kitchen up to her elbows in flour, making meat empanadas. As the pastries go into the oven, glamorous T?a Rosa whisks Isabel upstairs for a beauty and dress-up session. Fully made up and attired in colorful clothing, jewelry, and Rosa's high heels, the girl is ready for some dancing. It's a good thing that her energetic T?a Clara gets home just in time to give her some salsa lessons. The party leads up to the appearance of the empanadas hot out of the oven. The full-page illustrations are bold and vibrant, depicting beautiful Latinas enjoying one another's company. Recipes for empanadas de carne and picadillo are appended. (with an emphasis on family traditions and togetherness.) Both books are bilingual.
