Read the press release below for details. * Carter Hagemann of Jefferson, Grade Pre-K, Albany Public Library * Vivien Bizzell of Astoria, Grade K, Astoria Public Library * Jack H Wise of Bend, Grade 11, Deschutes Public Library: Downtown Bend * Flynn Cruzen of Portland, Grade Pre-K, Multnomah County Library: Hillsdale * Kason Kleiner of Grants Pass, Grade 1, Josephine County Library * Samuel Loh-Menendez of Portland, Grade Pre-K, Multnomah County Library: Hollywood Library * Henry Buss of Springfield, Grade Pre-K, Springfield Public Library * Alexandria Olsen of Springfield, Grade K, Springfield Public Library * Brooke Rush of Harrisburg, Grade 9, Springfield Public Library * Levi Butcher of Saint Helens, Grade 2, St. Helens Public Library * Margaret Hajdu-Paulen of Tigard, Grade 2, Tigard Public Library * Athena Turner of West Linn, Grade 6, West Linn Public Library * Eli Hendricks of Portland, Grade 2, West Slope Community Library This year 7,339 people entered the sweepstakes, which is the most entries since the sweepstakes began in 2010-great job everyone! Attached you'll find the list of how many people entered at each library. Keep in mind the library names on the attached list are exactly as people who entered the sweepstakes wrote them. That means if a patron misspelled your library's name or called it something slightly different, then your library will have multiple entries on the list and you will need to add them together to find out exactly how many people from your library entered the sweepstakes. For example: Albany Public Library, which has one main/central library and one branch, has at least 11 entries on this list. You can learn more about the summer reading sweepstakes on the State Library's webpage. Please let me know if you have any questions. Their names were randomly drawn as winners in this year's superhero-themed "Save for College, Save the Day!" summer reading campaign, sponsored by the Oregon College Savings Plan in partnership with the Oregon State Library and Oregon Library Association. The annual campaign is designed to help keep kids' minds engaged over the summer. Overall, the Oregon College Savings Plan awarded $14,906: each of the 14 winners received a $529 Oregon College Savings Plan account, while the libraries where the winners enrolled received a total of $7,500. "The Oregon College Savings Plan believes it is fundamentally important to support summer reading programs for Oregon families," said Michael Parker, executive director of the Oregon 529 Savings Network. "Studies show that reading year round can increase a child's academic performance, and that will help them to be college ready." According to the Oregon State Library, 206,425 youth from birth through age 18 signed up for this year's summer reading program at public libraries throughout Oregon; collectively, they read 144,643 books. At least 68,735 achieved their reading goal and completed the 2015 summer reading program. "This is the sixth year that we've partnered with the Oregon College Savings Plan on summer reading," said MaryKay Dahlgreen, Oregon State Librarian. "We appreciate their support of the importance of year round reading." The Save for College, Save the Day! campaign received 7,339 entries statewide, helping to spread awareness of the importance of both summer reading and saving early for college. The 14 winners selected include: * Carter Hagemann of Jefferson, Grade Pre-K, Albany Public Library * Vivien Bizzell of Astoria, Grade K, Astoria Public Library * Jack H Wise of Bend, Grade 11, Deschutes Public Library: Downtown Bend * Flynn Cruzen of Portland, Grade Pre-K, Multnomah County Library: Hillsdale * Kason Kleiner of Grants Pass, Grade 1, Josephine County Library * Samuel Loh-Menendez of Portland, Grade Pre-K, Multnomah County Library: Hollywood Library * Henry Buss of Springfield, Grade Pre-K, Springfield Public Library * Alexandria Olsen of Springfield, Grade K, Springfield Public Library * Brooke Rush of Harrisburg, Grade 9, Springfield Public Library * Levi Butcher of Saint Helens, Grade 2, St. Helens Public Library * Margaret Hajdu-Paulen of Tigard, Grade 2, Tigard Public Library * Athena Turner of West Linn, Grade 6, West Linn Public Library * Eli Hendricks of Portland, Grade 2, West Slope Community Library As part of the campaign, the Oregon College Savings Plan also underwrote a series of free special performances in libraries in communities with a population of 10,000 or less. The goal was to engage and motivate young readers, while helping these smaller libraries drive traffic and encourage summer reading. Select libraries and their patrons enjoyed entertainment from award-winning storyteller Christopher Leebrick, Penny's Puppets, Charlie Brown the Juggler, Rhys Thomas Jugglemania, and Rich Glauber's Music in Action throughout the summer months. Students write letters to any author explaining how that author's book changed their way of thinking about the world or themselves. Please help promote this program, including among homeschoolers. The LOC asks teachers to allow students to choose a book that is meaningful to them and asks students to explain *why* or *how* the book was significant to them instead of summarizing the plot. The focus of a participant's letter is to make clear the connection one has with a book. Here's what Lynette Gottlieb, a teacher in Corvallis, had to say about the contest: Letters about Literature was a completely positive experience for my students...importantly, some of my students who do not identify as writers, and do not generally enjoy the experience, were able to write about something meaningful to them and participate in an inclusive contest that also recognized them...the process connects them to the human experience of literature. It supports my English classroom where I give students choice about reading whenever possible and teach that literature and writing are first and foremost about communication. There are three competition levels: Level I for 4th-6th graders, Level II for 7th-8th graders, and Level III for 9th-12th graders. Oregon's three winners - one from each competition level - will go on to compete nationally. Last year Oregon?s own Heather DesChamp was a National Honor Award recipient! Entry forms and guidelines are available on the Willamette Writers and the State Library?s websites. All high school (Level III) entries must be postmarked by December 4, 2015 and elementary and middle school (Levels I and II) entries by January 11, 2016. Wellness/fitness is the theme so it may be a good time to try the free Summer Food Service Program to provide healthy food to children and teens participating in your summer reading program. Only one in five students who qualify for free school lunch participates in the free summer lunch program. That means four out of five of these students are going hungry during the summer, and we know hungry kids can't focus on their reading or during other library activities. The Summer Food Service Program is flexible. You can choose... * What type of meals you want to provide: morning snacks, afternoon snacks, breakfast, bag lunches, hot lunches, or dinner. * How many and which days you want to offer summer food: one or more days a week, including weekends. For example, you might provide afternoon snack once a week in conjunction with Saturday activity time. * To provide summer food only at a one-off event. For example, you might provide bag lunches at your summer reading grand finale picnic. * From a variety of free, ready to use banners, fliers, and other materials to promote summer food at your summer reading program. * To use teen volunteers to help you set-up/clean-up before and after providing food, help children and families get their food and get seated, read to children and families while they eat, and count meals distributed and number of people participating. Do you want to have meals available for summer reading participants at your library next summer? Then... 1. Find out if you are eligible for the free Summer Food Service Program by using this online tool. If your library is not in an eligible area, but there is an eligible area near your library, is there an opportunity to have an activity including meals there? I.e. Plan a one-off event, lead participants to a nearby summer meals site after a summer reading activity, etc. 2. Using the online tool, you may notice which summer meal sponsors operate sites nearby. Is there a school district or other summer meals organization nearby that may be interested in partnering with you? Contact them to start a conversation now! 3. Any questions? Would you like help finding local summer meal sponsors to partner with? Contact Cathy Brock (cathy.brock at state.or.us, 503-947-5898) to learn more and get started. The State Library and Oregon Department of Education's Summer Food Service Program have been working together for several years to help libraries and summer meal sites get more families to take advantage of the free summer reading and meals programs that can prevent summer learning loss by encouraging local partnerships. Those of you interested in engaging your community to recognize how hard it can be to be a parent and support parents in their efforts to provide a safe, nurturing environment for their children and teens may be interested. In 2012 public library staff in Oregon became mandatory reporters. I think it's been a couple years since information and resources about it has been shared on the listservs. This may also be a good time to talk with your library director about what your library is doing in regards to mandatory reporting. Here is one of the original communications about what libraries can do about mandatory reporting in case you need to jog your memory. In April, during Child Abuse Prevention Month, pinwheels will be on display in communities across Oregon, and nationally, to raise awareness about how we can all prevent child abuse and neglect. The pinwheel represents hope and promise; when individuals, social organizations, businesses and communities display this symbol they make the statement that every child deserves to be raised in safe, healthy, and nurturing environments. Our goals this year are to distribute or sell 20,000 pinwheels, coordinate a Pinwheel Garden in every county, and engage 100 partners, organizations, and businesses in the 2016 Pinwheels for Prevention Campaign. How can your library help? * Have a passive program for patrons of all ages to make pinwheels and add to their pinwheel display with messaging explaining the purpose of Pinwheels for Prevention. * Present a storytime about healthy families, have children a create art that represents their favorite day with their family, and enter their art in the Pinwheels for Prevention Art Contest. Art submissions can be sent to Children's Trust Fund of Oregon at 1785 NE Sandy Blvd. Suite 270. Portland, OR 97232 or scan and email prevention at ctfo.org. Winners will receive recognition on CTFO's website and social media, as well as a small grant provided to the winning library. * Use pinwheels to conduct a wind energy STEM activity, including a sign and/or brief explanation of Pinwheels for Prevention. Here is one from Teach Engineering and one from Scientific AmericanTM, and there are many more online to chose from. * Host a Pinwheel Garden on your library's grounds.. Learn how at www.ctfo.org. * Partner with a local Parenting Education Hub or CTFO program grantee to host a parent education class at your library. * Partner with your local child welfare office to host a mandatory reporter training for library staff and other community workers who are mandatory reporters. What does your library get? If you register your program by submitting a Campaign Commitment Form (online here), then your library will receive recognition on the Prevent Child Abuse Oregon website, inclusion in the Pinwheels for Prevention 2016 annual report, and social media exposure on the Children's Trust Fund of Oregon and Prevent Child Abuse Oregon's Facebook pages, as well as related twitter feeds. For more information about ways to contribute, Commitment Forms, and pinwheel order forms visit our website. Please direct inquiries to Pamela Heisler at 503-894-9103 or via email at pamela at ctfo.org. Hello one and all, Please excuse cross postings. I wanted to pass on a tip I got from a librarian in Minnesota when I was presenting workshops there. For those of you who include early literacy asides/parent tips in your storytimes, you might like her approach: She came up with a phrase which makes the tip quite conversational and not condescending in feel. She says, "When we [activity or practice]. . . , we . . .[connection to literacy] " So for example, "When we point out rhyming words, then we are helping our children hear the smaller sounds in words which will help them later sound out words." Or, "When we talk about the different meanings of one word, we help develop their vocabulary which increasing their understanding or comprehension." Or "When we run a finger under the words in the title of a book, we draw the children's attention to the print which will help the focus on the text when they are learning to read." Hope this may be of help as we share early literacy information with the adults. I know we are always looking for ways to make it easier to share early literacy information with parents and caregivers, so I thought I would pass this along. Allison, one of our Youth Services Librarians, has been hard at work this fall planning the details and creating print pieces for our upcoming soft launch. Have you heard of the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program? It?s a program in which preschool children (with their caregivers) register either in a library or online to attempt to read at least 1,000 books before the child enters Kindergarten. The caregivers keep track of the books they read with the child, and at certain milestones the child earns prizes. Once the child has read 1,000 books, they?ve completed the program and receive great accolades, in addition to all the benefits of being exposed to a variety of children?s literature. Of course it doesn?t necessarily have to be 1,000 different books; we all know that children enjoy reading the same books over and over. This program goes hand-in-hand with reading aloud 15 minutes per day and supports both Every Child Ready to Read and Babies Need Words Every Day. There?s no best or correct way to implement the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program; it can be customized to fit any budget, for unlimited number of participants, and can go on indefinitely. Upon first hearing about the program, the number 1,000 may seem quite large. How can children possibly read 1,000 books before Kindergarten? It?s actually quite simple. If a child reads 1 book each day, the 1,000-book goal can be met in less than three years. Increasing the reading to three books per day would mean that the child completes the 1,000 books in less than a year. While it seems daunting, the goal is attainable. Any reading counts, including books shared in story times. Ready to learn more about this program? Here are some resources that you might find useful in deciding whether or not this is a good fit for your library and your community. ? 1000 Books Before Kindergarten Foundation ? Then an odd human family moves in and is not scared no matter what the "ghost family" tries. They all live together in the end happily. The story is a family (maybe ghosts) that haunt a house. A family of werewolves moves in an the original family scare them away, then a family of vampires moves in and gets scared away, too. Then an odd human family moves in and is not scared no matter what the "ghost family" tries. They all live together in the end happily. The cover had a dark teal boarder, and has a picture of the house in the middle. Does anyone have any ideas for what this might be? I've been asked to do a quick book talk for 3rd grade classes, which are doing a unit on biographies. This will be my first book talk (though as a fiction writer I've definitely done my share of pitching book ideas). If I were talking about a select group of books, I would obviously pre-read them and then come up with hooks of why they'd be fun to read. A general subject like biography, however, seems to dictate a different, perhaps more general approach? I'm definitely reading some biographies but if I talk about 3 or 4 even, it's likely the students won't be able to check out those particular ones I'd pinpoint--the elementary school's library doesn't usually have multiple copies of most of them. There are, of course, more than one volume on major figures like Abraham Lincoln or Helen Keller, but many times those volumes aren't duplicate copies, but another author's version. Don't, however, want to spend all my time telling them why they *should* want to read biographies. And as a part-timer, I don't have time to read all the books in the school's 921 section! ? Any advice, direction to good resources, or suggestions welcome. Thanks, and happy new year! The facts in Paulsens book make terrific survival trivia questions that kids will want answers to. Smile is a great example of graphic novels that grab kids, no matter what they usually like to read Find a sports hero bio or a celebrity bio and show. You really should read the books before recommending them. For example in Beverly Cleary.'s autobiography, she touches on being sexually abused. Third graders might not be ready for that. HTH! My Name Is Georgia: A Portrait by Jeanette Winter http://www.amazon.com/My-Name-Is-Georgia-Portrait/dp/015204597X Duke Ellington: The Piano Prince and His Orchestra http://www.amazon.com/Duke-Ellington-Piano-Prince-Orchestra/dp/0786814209 For the first, I shared pictures from a Georgia O?Keefe calendar before reading the story. For the second, we closed our eyes and listened to some Duke Ellington tunes after hearing the story. Depending on time, perhaps you could find 5 to 10 biographies to feature (contemporary & historical; sciences, arts, history, etc.), and instead of booktalking each specifically, you could do a quick group activity. Introduce the concept of biographies and that there are books about people from now and long ago and who are famous for a variety of reasons. Have big cards with the biography subjects? names and other cards with an image and/or fact that represents them, and have students guess at matching them. For example, for Georgia O?Keefe, you could feature one of her paintings. For Duke Ellington, you could show a piano and music notes, and have a QR code that links to one of his songs that students could listen to an excerpt of. For a sports figure, perhaps show something related to the sport (maybe a basketball) and include a statistic (most free throw points in an NBA game). Etc. Once students have paired the cards, go through as a group confirming or rearranging. Once a match is correct, show the book that relates to the card duo. Ultimately, the point of your ?booktalk? would be to get students interested in reading biographies, and they could read any bio, not just those featured in your activity. Maybe you could gather a crate of biographies and check them out to the teacher/s for use in the classroom. Here a few lists of picture book biographies that I found. https://nerdybookclub.wordpress.com/2013/01/05/top-ten-biographical-picture-books-by-alyson-beecher/ https://www.goodreads.com/shelf/show/biography-picture-books http://www.slj.com/2013/12/reviews/books/picture-book-biographies-portals-to-the-past/ Good luck!
