Our library district (Fort Vancouver Regional Library) is working on district goals, standards and guidelines for in-house tablets for children and tween use. One of our libraries will undergo renovation in the fall and we plan to add fixed tablets to both the new tween and refreshed kids areas. I'm wondering if any libraries in Oregon have successfully implemented in-house youth tablets at your locations? If you have, would you please describe your situation and how it goes? We would like to learn as much as we can from others before implementing ours. I would like to take our team for a tour and talk with your staff if it's feasible depends on the distance. If your library circulate tablets for children, I would like to learn more of your program as well. I've gotten some very helpful information from a couple youth services librarians at Seattle Public Library who presented a session on this topic at this year's WLA conference. I was agonizing about this year's theme, because I felt it promoted screen-time and commercialism, and wishing that Heydi were still here, because I wanted her to take the lead with this theme, she would have rocked it. But I didn't have Heydi, and I needed to make the program work within my convictions. We had already chosen a few local heroes, then I had an idea: Why not ask the local schools to each choose a hero from among their staffs? The schools loved the idea, they got bookmarks and posters with their school heroes, the kids are totally stoked that one of their buttons (we give away buttons instead of toys) will have someone from their school on it. We have 2 custodians, a music teacher, a PE teacher and a Vice-Principal. So what I thought might be the most lame program ever is turning into one of our most popular programs ever. My hope is that more kids will participate because of this connection to their school. We plan a huge Super-Hero Training Day at the end of August and have invited all of the local and school heroes to join us! I'm trying to think of how to make this connection with the schools happen again next year if it works out as well as I hope it does. I just learned about two things Oregon libraries are doing for summer reading this year that are new ideas to me. Perhaps they're new to you too! Baker County Library hosted "Parents are Heroes" in May to provide parents of young children a preview of the summer reading program, tips for reading and building early literacy skills with their children, a giveaway book, and a literacy bag. What a great way to let parents know that young children can participate in the summer reading program too-and sneak in an early literacy education session! The Dalles Wasco County Library's grand prize for their K-5 Summer Learning Club is a ride to the first day of school in... a fire truck! This may be a good strategy for getting more boys to participate in and finish the summer reading program, and it's a great relationship building activity for the library and the fire department. Is anyone else doing something they think may be unique this summer? Thanks, Katie [Slogan Text][Cooper_laughing] Summer Reading 2015 at Oregon libraries! Find a summer food site. I just wanted to let you know the State Library still doesn't know if the proposed changes to the Ready to Read grant (HB 2479) will be approved by the Legislature. Therefore, we don't know yet if legally established public libraries will receive a Ready to Read or a Reading for Success grant application in July. As the grant administrator, I am prepared for both scenarios. MaryKay and I will email you when we learn anything that may impact the grant one way or the other. You can also keep up-to-date on HB 2479 via the Legislature's website. Please let me know if you have any questions. We are excited to see SL3 ( Summer Learning, Summer Library, Summer Lunch) grow in the future, doing all we can to stop the opportunity gap." State Librarian MaryKay Dahlgreen shares "There are always more youth to reach, especially during the summer months, but we must be doing something right to see our 30 Summer Learning, Summer Library, Summer Lunch (SL3) sites highlighted on a national site. After we selected the recipients, we surprised the essay-winning students and their teachers at their schools. The students received certificates and the honored teachers received superhero t-shirts that said "I Teach. What's Your Superpower?" This was a great way to recognize teachers as heroes in our community and to promote our Summer Reading program in the schools. - Local Heroes Summer Reading Kickoff Celebration: To officially kick-off our Summer Reading program, we closed a street block behind the library and held an outdoor Local Heroes Celebration. We partnered with ten public safety and military groups including Corvallis Police Department, Corvallis Fire Department, Benton County Sheriff's Office, Oregon State Police, Oregon National Guard, OSU ROTC units, and several search and rescue units. The groups brought various vehicles for the kids to explore, including patrol cars, a police motorcycle, a fire truck, an ambulance, a marine patrol boat, a military transport truck, a Humvee, a mountain rescue truck, and an animal control truck. In addition, three search and rescue dogs, a sheriff's K-9 dog, and three horses and their riders from the Benton County Sheriff's Office Mounted Posse also attended. This event was a great way for us to honor and partner with the local heroes in our community. If you want additional information about these programs, just send me an e-mail. Happy Summer Reading! Message-ID: <640435851FD7CB4AB3C4BE0D1963BA2452B06F35@OSLEXCHANGE.osl.state.or.us.local> Summer reading is in full-swing! Don't forget... * 2,650 children and teens have entered the Save for College Save the Day summer reading sweepstakes as of Friday, June 26. * Contact Kathy Griffin (KGriffin at tiaa-cref.org) to order more Save for College Save the Day materials for the summer reading sweepstakes. A partnership with the Oregon College Savings Plan, Oregon State Library, and Oregon Library Association's Children's Services Division (CSD) and Oregon Young Adult Network (OYAN). * Contact Hazel Randolph (hazel.randolph at state.or.us) to order more free summer lunch bookmarks. Only about 1 in 5 students who eat free or reduced meals during the school year also eat free lunch in the summer. Hunger negatively impacts learning and behavior so please help these children find free summer lunch sites! A partnership with the Oregon State Library and Oregon Department of Education's Summer Food Service Program. * Download and print summer reading certificates from the State Library's webpage. The children's and teen certificates are in full color, and the all-ages certificate is black and white. The children's and all-ages certificates are bilingual. A partnership with the Oregon State Library, CSD, and OYAN. * Watch AM Northwest on the August 12th to see CSD Secretary and West Linn Public Library's Rebecca Mayer promote summer reading! KATU is promoting summer reading at public libraries and Save for College Save the Day with four AM Northwest spots, lots of commercials, and a summer reading webpage. Sponsored by the Oregon College Savings Plan, and in partnership with the State Library, CSD, and OYAN. Thank you Rebecca:) * Oregon libraries that serve fewer than 10,000 people have already booked one free summer reading performer to promote summer reading and Save for College Save the Day. That's 51% of Oregon public libraries! Sponsored by the Oregon College Savings Plan, and in partnership with the State Library, CSD, and OYAN. Please let me know if you have any questions. The National Academies Press (NAP) added a new report to their offerings: Identifying and Supporting Productive STEM Programs in Out-of-School Settings. Some library staff may be interested in the findings. As a matter of fact, the report mentions a partnership in Portland that includes the Multnomah County Library. You can access the resource online: http://www.nap.edu/catalog/21740/identifying-and-supporting-productive-stem-programs-in-out-of-school-settings. Most (all?) NAP offerings are available to read online or to download as a PDF for free. There are several other publications about STEM and about Next Generation Science Standards.
