Subject: [YSCON] Upcoming Webinar Series: Enhancing Preschool Storytimes

Dear Colleagues,

Please feel free to share this announcement about a series of webinars on preschool storytime basics and enhancing storytimes with science, math, music, and art with librarians in your States. The webinars will be presented by Kim Lehman on four consecutive Tuesday afternoons in January. The Texas State Library's webinar platform will allow up to 1,000 participants. The webinars will be recorded and archived for later viewing.

Kim Lehman (http://www.kimlehman.com/default.htm) has 30 years of experience working with children in public libraries, schools, child care centers, and museums. As a former youth specialist for the Austin Public Library and Connecting Texas Libraries Statewide, Kim presented many storytimes and science based programs in library settings. Kim is a certified early childhood educator and a professional musician and storyteller on the Texas Commission on the Arts Touring Roster presenting both art and science programs for all ages. Kim is currently presenting a very successful series of workshops throughout Texas entitled "STEAM in Preschool Storytime" (https://www.tsl.texas.gov/ld/workshops/steam).

Preschool Storytime Basics - Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2017; 2-3 pm CST

Storytimes in public libraries offer a valuable service to children, parents, and child care providers in the community on many different levels. This webinar will cover the basics of planning, preparing, and presenting engaging storytimes for preschoolers in the library. We will cover surefire books and literature selections as well as songs and fingerplays to captivate a young audience. Learn a few tips to address some storytime challenges like organizing materials, reading aloud to a group, and managing difficult situations. Participants will be able to:

* Plan, prepare and present effective storytime programs in the library

* Present age appropriate books, songs and fingerplay in library programs

* Organize materials for programs effectively

Science and Math in Storytimes - Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2017; 2-3 pm CST

Children have an innate curiosity about the physical world around them. Storytimes offer a unique opportunity to help young children understand and organize information needed to make connections and solve problems. This webinar will explore inexpensive, easy to implement science and math experiences using literature, fingerplays, activities, and props. These ideas can be used in storytimes, as passive programming in the library, or as resources for parents and caregivers to extend the storytime experience for further STEM explorations.

Participants will be able to:

* Explore ways to use science and math experiences in library programs for preschool children

* Integrate books, music, and fingerplays centered on math and science

* Introduce parents and caregivers to age appropriate math and science activities for further science explorations

Storytime Crafts - Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2017; 2-3 pm CST

The process of creating offers children an opportunity to develop fine motor skills, cooperation, and a genuine sense of accomplishment. Working independently increases confidence and creative joy. This webinar will look at developmentally appropriate craft ideas to use in toddler and preschool storytimes as well as tips and suggestions for implementing and organizing craft activities in the library.

Participants will be able to:

* Implement age appropriate craft activities as a part of library storytimes

* Identify developmentally appropriate expectations for young children

* Organize and manage craft activities in the library

The Magic of Music in Storytimes - Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2017; 2-3 pm CST

Music is a universal language and adds so much to storytimes. Learn ways to use music with young children in storytimes through songs, movement, literature, puppets, and props. Music in library storytimes is not about having the perfect voice or playing an instrument. It is about the magic that sounds and poetry bring to our shared experience. Whether you sing openly or in the privacy of your own shower, join us for fun and ideas. You will be inspired to warble a tune before the webinar is over.

Participants will be able to:

* Use opening and closing songs in storytimes

* Incorporate songs and music in storytimes using puppets, props, movement, and books

* Reference and use music resources including books, recordings, and websites
