Message-ID: <640435851FD7CB4AB3C4BE0D1963BA246483D428@OSLEXCHANGE.osl.state.or.us.local> Sometimes we're at a loss when asked to explain the value of our work or to briefly describe are job... which includes dozens of different types of tasks many people can't even imagine. We can actually do both in one sentence if we think a head, and we can prepare a couple different sentences depending on our mood or potential audience. This can be very powerful for our patrons and other stakeholders as well as for us... reminding ourselves what we love about our work and why it's important to us. Read the instructions and examples on ALA's Association for Library Services to Children's website and the email below to learn specifically about creating a diversity elevator speech. Here are two elevator speeches I created for myself this morning in about 10 minutes as an example: * General: I help librarians learn about best practices to improve youth services so underserved children and teens have more opportunities to keep up academically with their better-off peers. * Diversity specific: I help librarians access resources to increase and improve diversity in their collections so every child and teen can find books that will inspire them, that they can relate to, and that reflect the diverse world in which they live. Next time someone with influence in your community asks you what you do or why it's important, what are you going to say? Good luck! While opportunities to participate are only available to those associated with school districts right now, I thought some of you might want to know what?s going on. Hi. I thought some of you might be interested in the press release below from the Oregon Department of Education. ODE (Oregon) has joined #GoOpen with other ?states from across the country in committing to support the use of high-quality, openly licensed educational resources in our schools.? So far, Beaverton is the only Launch district listed, but Carla Wade from ODE told me that other districts are welcome to participate. The press release did not mention Oregon?s involvement in the K-12 OER (open educational resources) Collaborate that ODE announced in February 2015, so I asked Carla about that, too. This is her response: ?The K-12 OER Collaborative work is one part of what we are doing. The first step was joining the exchange. Next we will be building a plan and implementing usage of OER. It will be very important to have libraries involved!? She read my mind with that last statement, and that?s why I?m alerting you. If you?re interested in lending your expertise and time to the OER cause, you might want to find out what your district is doing in that area. Today Deputy Superintendent Salam Noor announced the launch of a new statewide #GoOpen initiative. Oregon is joining states from across the country in committing to support the use of high-quality, openly licensed educational resources in our schools. Oregon was recognized today for its leadership by the U.S. Department of Education at the #GoOpen Exchange, a gathering of state and district leaders, innovative education technology providers, and non-profit organizations working together to support educators transition to using openly licensed resources. ?Access to high-quality, openly-licensed education resources improve teaching and learning in our state,? Deputy Superintendent Noor said. ?We are excited to become a member of the #GoOpen Exchange Community as we continue to build on the good work currently underway in our state and increase access to these resources in Oregon schools.? Oregon was recognized for its commitment to a statewide technology strategy that includes the use of openly-licensed resources as a central component, developing and maintaining a statewide repository for openly licensed resources, and participating in a community of practice with other #GoOpen states and districts to share learning and professional development resources. More information on Oregon?s #GoOpen commitment can be found on the Oregon Educator Network website at http://www.oregonednet.org/groups/go-open. ?States are powerful collaborators in supporting and scaling innovation,? says Joseph South, Director of the Office of Educational Technology at the U.S. Department of Education. ?They can connect forward thinking educators, share effective ideas and approaches widely, amplify successes, and can support districts in leveraging limited resources. With the launch of statewide #GoOpen initiatives, states are helping districts thoughtfully transition to a new model of learning by facilitating the creation of an open ecosystem of digital resources that can increase equity and empower teachers.? Openly licensed educational resources have enormous potential to increase equitable access to high-quality education opportunities in Oregon and throughout the United States. Message-ID: <640435851FD7CB4AB3C4BE0D1963BA246483EA46@OSLEXCHANGE.osl.state.or.us.local> Make a Splash with Project Outcome: Measuring the Success of Summer Reading Programs Thursday, March 17 at 11:00am-12:00pm This free webinar is designed to teach participants how to administer Project Outcome surveys to measure outcomes for their library's summer reading program. By successfully administering surveys, libraries will be able to use the results to showcase program successes and influence future summer reading programs. Participants will hear from one Project Outcome participant who successfully surveyed their summer reading program in 2015 and learned valuable lessons from the process. There will also be a Q&A and discussion segment where participants will have the opportunity to ask questions and share ideas with their peers. Takeaways At the conclusion of this webinar, participants will: * Understand how to successfully measure summer reading programs using the Project Outcome Summer Reading survey; * Know how to apply best practices for summer reading surveying; and * Be able to use the results to influence changes to future summer programming. Who Should Attend This webinar is open to everyone, but will be most beneficial for those already registered with Project Outcome. Project Outcome is a free service provided by the Public Library Association. If you would like to enroll in Project Outcome in advance of the webinar, please do so at www.projectoutcome.org and view our "How to Enroll in Project Outcome" webinar for training. These are the things children's librarians should know and do or be striving to learn and try. This is a great tool to identify what you're doing well and what you need to work on, then use it to identify professional development opportunities in those areas. It's also a great tool for creating job descriptions.-Katie ________________________________ New edition of Competencies for Librarians Serving Children in Public Libraries available The Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), has released a revised edition of its Competencies for Librarians Serving Children in Public Libraries. ALSC recommends these core competencies to all children's librarians and other library staff whose primary duties include delivering library service to and advocating library service for children ages birth to 14. "These competencies represent the best of ALSC's knowledge and experience serving children in libraries," said ALSC President Andrew Medlar. "Thanks to the ALSC Education Committee for putting so much hard work in to this new edition." Effective library service to children entails a broad range of experience and professional skills. The ALSC competencies seek to define the role of the librarian serving children and touches upon seven knowledge and skill sets: commitment to client group; reference and user services; programming skills; knowledge, curation, and management of materials; outreach and advocacy; administrative and management skills; professionalism and professional development. "The ALSC Education Committee thanks everyone who participated in the feedback process," said ALSC Education Committee co-Chair Nina Lindsay. "Children deserve the highest-quality service and we feel that these competencies create a very high standard for library service to children." "Any librarian serving youth can use these in their library," said ALSC Education Committee co-Chair Margaret Tice. "We also encourage the use of these competencies in library science programs that contain youth service classes." As an added bonus to ALSC members, free downloadable versions of the competencies also are available to print for training and workshops. The printer-ready PDFs were professionally designed in a booklet format in color and in black and white. Competencies for Librarians Serving Children in Public Libraries was created (1989) and revised (1999, 2009 and 2015) by the ALSC Education Committee, and approved by the ALSC Board of Directors at the on 2015 American Library Association Annual Conference. The Association for Library Service to Children is the world's largest organization dedicated to the support and enhancement of library service to children. ALSC's network includes more than 4,000 children's and youth librarians, children's literature experts, publishers, education and library school faculty members, and other adults dedicated to creating a better future for children through libraries. We love good books. 2. We love good authors. 3. We love good parties. This April we?ve all got a chance to combine all those things together! April 12 is the 100th birthday of beloved author Beverly Cleary, and we?ve got ideas for celebrating! [Happy Birthday, Beverly Cleary!] Happy Birthday, Beverly Cleary! While these days she lives in California, Mrs. Cleary?s stories of the kids, families, and pets populating Klickitat Street in Portland, Oregon, live on in the imagination of readers everywhere. She was one of the first authors to write about everyday kids doing the things many kids can relate to, like dealing with bullies or pining after a new pet. She was also the first person to write about a mouse riding a motorcycle (as far as I can tell she?s the only person to write about that, which makes it even more of a reason to celebrate)! Librarians from all over Cleary?s birth state of Oregon brainstormed ways to celebrate the author and her books, and you can find a whole battalion of ideas to get your programming juices flowing here. Maybe a vehicle petting zoo in honor of Ralph S. Mouse? An animal adoption event with your local county animal services agency in honor of Ribsy and Socks? Perhaps making animals out of alphabet letters in honor of Ramona Quimby (age 8 eternally)? Oregon Public Broadcasting will also be airing a special Art Beat episode highlighting Mrs. Cleary?s career, including a brand new interview with her and with authors she?s influenced (spoilers: one of them is JUDY BLUME!!!). To tide you over ?til April, here are some fun Beverly Cleary facts that might come in handy at library (or pub) trivia: ? Beverly Cleary?s first book was published in 1950 and the last in 1999, so her professional writing career spanned over 49 years! ? She was a ?reluctant reader? as a child until the wonderful combination of a great teacher and a great librarian turned her on to the joy of reading. ? Several of her books were recognized by the Newbery Committee, winning the Medal for Dear Mr. Henshaw in 1984, as well as Honors for Ramona and Her Father in 1978 and Ramona Quimby, Age 8 in 1982. ? She wrote teen romances (Fifteen, The Luckiest Girl, Jean and Johnny) as well as fiction novels, picture books and autobiographies. ? Her birthday is a holiday recognized in many schools around the U.S.? Drop Everything And Read (D.E.A.R.) Day. ? She was a librarian before she was an author! ********************************************************************** [bio pic]Our guest blogger today is Natasha Forrester Campbell. Last year at this time Oregon public library directors filled out a survey about working with early learning hubs. Information provided by library directors via that survey was used to create resources for all public libraries! The resources are now available on the OLA Children's Services Division website. Are you struggling to get families to come to your storytimes or other early literacy programs? Are you having a hard time getting the word out to families with young children about the early literacy resources you have at the library? Use the Contact Directory to call or email someone at your early learning hub and start a conversation with them about helping families provide early literacy experiences for their children. Are you looking to start or expand early literacy outreach to childcare providers, Head Start, and/or other organizations in your community that serve families with young children? Here are some Activity Ideas for partnering with your early learning hub to help you reach the families that need library services the most. These are activities other Oregon libraries report doing with their early learning hub! Do need help justifying the staff time and other costs associated with working with your early learning hub? Tell your library's stakeholders how other Oregon libraries are benefitting from working with their early learning hubs. Your library might experiences these benefits too if you work with your hub. Do you need help figuring out how to work with your early learning hub? Here are tips from other Oregon libraries. Hopefully these resources will help you develop partnership with your early learning hub that help your library reach more young children in your community! Each certificate is available in .pdf format which everyone should be able to access and .pub format which requires Microsoft Publisher to access. The children's (full color), all ages (black & white), and adult (full color) certificates are bilingual, the teen certificate (full color) is in English only. Ideas to get money for printing certificates locally: * Use your Ready to Read Grant. * Ask your Friends of the Library or Library Foundation for funding. * Ask a local civic organization like Kiwanis, Lions, or Rotary for a donation. * Ask local businesses for donations and recognize their donations-e.g. create a bulletin board or display where you recognize all summer reading supporters, submit a newspaper article thanking donors, put donors' logos on summer reading fliers or other promotional materials. * Ask a local print shop to provide an in-kind donation-i.e. they would print the certificates at no cost to the library, and the library would acknowledge their contribution in some way. Thank you Becky Pearson from McMinnville Public Library, Sam Geary from McMinnville Public Library, and Itzel Sayago from Cornelius Public Library for designing the certificates! Please let me know if you have any questions. A: In the past, printing and distributing hardcopies of the summer reading certificates was paid for by a donation. The donation funds are no longer available. The State Library surveyed public libraries to ask if they thought printing and distributing the certificates was a good use of State Library funds. The results of the survey were shared with the executive boards of OLA's Children's Services Division and Oregon Young Adults Network, and both organizations recommended that the State Library 1) discontinue printing and distributing hardcopies, 2) make a black-and-white certificate available to download for those who don't have a color printer, and 3) provide a few local funding suggestions. The State Library decided to follow these recommendations. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Please vote for one (or more!) of them to ensure Oregon is represented! The 2016 ALA election runs from 3/15/16 through 4/22/16. ALSC members current as of 1/31/2016 are eligible to vote. The three nominees are Sarah Hinkle, Andrea Milano and Heather McNeil. Read more information about them below: Sarah Hinkle started working in public libraries at age 16 and never stopped. Her 15+ year career has spanned Ohio, New York and Oregon. In her first professional position as a children's librarian at Queens Library she spent 5 years working at several of the busiest locations across the 63 branches. She was promoted to Assistant Coordinator of Children's Services, then Coordinator of Early Learning Services where she was the Director of the first preschool located in a public library. Her heart led her to Portland, Oregon where she is currently a children's librarian at West Linn Public Library. Early literacy has been a passion throughout her career, with her undergraduate in early childhood education. She has previously served ALSC on the Early Childhood Programs and Services Committee as well as the Every Child Ready to Read 2 Oversight Committee, published articles in Children & Libraries sharing best practices and presented nationally at ALA conferences. She has led Mock Caldecott events both for youth as well as staff training and considers it a great honor (and lifelong dream!) to be considered for this distinctive opportunity to critically evaluate American picture book illustrations with a group of peers across the country. Andrea Milano's career has come full circle, from Clackamas County to Multnomah County and back again, with a brief interlude in Clatsop County. She is now the Youth Services Manager at Lake Oswego Public Library. She has served children and their caregivers with passion and commitment, promoting books and early literacy in as many ways as possible, for 20+ years. She was the first public librarian to receive the International Reading Association's Celebrate Literacy Award in 2008 and that same Summer was featured in Portland Monthly's "Best Of" issue as the Best Storyteller (really they meant best delivery of storytime). Andrea has served on various YALSA (Popular Paperbacks) and ALSC (Intellectual Freedom and Public Awareness) committees, including the 2010 Newbery award committee. That work was some of the most exciting and challenging she's done. It was a privilege and honor to work collaboratively with librarians from a variety of different literacy communities. She is inspired to represent Oregon on the 2018 Caldecott committee and continue the tradition of so many great librarians from all around the state who've done the same. Heather McNeil has been a youth services librarian for 39 years, beginning in Littleton, CO. That's where she also began her parallel careers as a professional storyteller and author, culminating with the opportunity to represent the United States at international storytelling festivals in Scotland and New Zealand, and publishing two collections of folklore, based on stories she heard while traveling in Kenya and Scotland. She moved to Oregon 17 years ago, which was one of the smartest things she ever did! She is now a Public Services Manager for Deschutes Public Library, supervising youth, outreach and Latino services. Heather joined the Oregon wave of promoting early literacy and is certified as a Specialty Master Trainer, which has brought her to many beautiful parts of Oregon in order to teach the joys of books for age 0-5. She is the author of Read, Rhyme and Romp: Early Literacy Skills and Activities for Librarians, Teachers and Parents, as well as many articles for Children and Libraries, and The OLA Quarterly. Heather has served on the 2005 Newbery, the 2008 Notable Children's Recordings, and the 2013 Wilder Committees. The Oregon Library Association named Heather as the Librarian of the Year in 2014. Here are resources about starting makerspaces! Message-ID: <640435851FD7CB4AB3C4BE0D1963BA2464857EA3@OSLEXCHANGE.osl.state.or.us.local> OLA's Children's Services Division held a workshop on Saturday 3/12 which included a lot of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) programming ideas. Since then, a couple people have asked me about resources to help them get started with makerspaces in their small library. I thought the rest of you might be interested in the resources I found... Here are four free archived webinars you can watch anytime: * Digital Media Labs & Maker Spaces in Small & Rural Libraries is a webinar about "...how small and rural libraries are bringing creation spaces to their communities." * Makerspaces in Libraries: Legal Considerations "Your community is supercharged about the new makerspace planned for your library. All systems are full speed ahead, and the staff is ready. But wait. Have you considered all the [legal] issues?" * Making Your Space: Creators and Makers in the Library webinar "...this webinar will help you learn how to get started and grow a space in your library for creating. Together, we will debunk the hype, learn how to define your library's scope and audience, get your board on board, and find creative partners in your community." There are two follow-up articles related to this webinar you might be interested in, Learning through Playful Exploration with Makerspaces and Makers, iPads, and Ketchup: Digital Services for Children. * The Future is Now: Rural Library as Innovation Incubator is a webinar about "...Rural and small libraries with limited resources can become community innovation incubators, by providing patrons access to transformative technologies and by providing space for new ideas to be explored. Beyond makerspaces to editing suites and digital learning labs, libraries are empowering and impacting their communities, now and in the future..." Here are a couple other articles you might find helpful in thinking about what approach is really right for your unique community: * A Slice of Maker Pie: Stories from Three Learner Labs is an article about "...three libraries who navigated a more serious route toward which slice of 'maker pie' would be most palatable to their communities and staff. Each one offers a distinct perspective based on library attributes and community needs, and openly shares their personal journey in selecting the appropriate environment and the foundation on which to build their digital media lab, teen hub or makerspace." * Make. Learn. Connect. is an article exploring... "There is a blitz of digital literacy initiatives in libraries across the nation as the imperatives mount for all citizens to get up to speed on 21st century skills and tools... At the same time, there is a rising tide of makerspaces percolating into library spaces, or setting up in collaboration with libraries. Is there a connection between these two trends?" Here are a couple books you might want to check out via interlibrary loan from the State Library: [http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-nd5FCKkYyWI/VKsJP7itWaI/AAAAAAAAAYk/dy6nz8fPWHA/s1600/index.jpg] * Mathew Hamilton and Dara Hanke Schmidt. (2015). Make It Here: Inciting Creativity and Innovation in Your Library. Santa Barbara, CA: Libraries Unlimited. 978-1-61069-554-1. "...a complete, step-by-step guide for starting a makerspace program at your library and follows through with instructions for operation and building on your success." [http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-2h1TSD7AtKc/VK68DolUv5I/AAAAAAAAAY4/O1DUHOAYqPs/s1600/51K4Tw2RLYL.jpg] * Burke, John J. (2014). Makerspaces: A Practical Guide for Librarians. Boulder, CO: Rowman &Littlefield. 978-1-4422-2967-9. "This practical guide will help librarians develop, budget for, and implement makerspaces; write grant proposals for funding; and understand the mindset behind the maker movement in order to meet patron needs." If you would like to request these books or other materials from the Oregon State Library please use your library's established interlibrary loan process (e.g. OCLC or ALA request form). Otherwise, send your full name, the name of your library, complete title information, shipping address, and a phone number to the document delivery department at library.request at state.or.us or (fax) 503-588-7119. Items will be checked out to your library, not to you personally, for 4 weeks (print materials) or 2 weeks (videos). Materials will be delivered via mail or Orbis Cascade Alliance Courier, and you may return them the same way. Then you might consider applying to join the Curation Corps to help select books the Open eBook Collection! Please read the following email from the Digital Public Library of America for details. ________________________________ From: Digital Public Library of America [mailto:info=dp.la at mail139.atl121.mcsv.net] On Behalf Of Digital Public Library of America Sent: Wednesday, March 09, 2016 7:36 AM Subject: Curation Corps 2016: Help Us Continue Growing Open eBooks Curation Corps 2016: Help Us Continue Growing Open eBooks Two weeks ago we were thrilled to join The New York Public Library, First Book, and Baker & Taylor in announcing the launch of Open eBooks, an app containing thousands of popular and award-winning titles that are free for children from low-income households. The goal of Open eBooks is to encourage a love of reading and serve as a gateway to children reading even more often, whether in school, at libraries, or through other eBook reading apps. You may be wondering: what was DPLA?s role in all of this? It was our national network of librarians and cultural heritage organizations who helped to coordinate books for inclusion in Open eBooks. In summer 2015, we issued a call for interested librarians and school media specialists to apply for the opportunity to be a part of the inaugural Curation Corps. We evaluated over 140 compelling applications from across the country and selected nine passionate individuals who represent a broad range of expertise and a commitment to serving low-income and diverse populations. The DPLA Curation Corps applied their knowledge and professional skills to shape a compelling collection that is diverse, exciting, and age-appropriate so that every child has a book to read and enjoy. ?I believe in literacy as the basic skill for success in school. I work in a special education school and spend every working day with barriers to literacy. My goals in both applying and wishing to continue with this initiative are to promote accessible and diverse books for children. Specifically, the books that make a child laugh, ask questions, and read out loud just for the fun of it!? writes Curation Corps member Dorothy M. Hughes. Continuing Curation Corps member Vandy Pancetti-Donelson serves because, ?this library is always open and I want to make sure our children have good books to choose. There is a book for every reader.? To learn more about the members of the Curation Corps, visit the Curation Corps homepage. Call for Curation Corps Class of 2016 After the successful Open eBooks launch, partners and publishers are excited to continue growing the collection with the help of the second class of the Curation Corps. Content selection will continue to prioritize diverse books, with an eye to multicultural and non-English language titles. We are also looking to create a collection of ebooks available to all readers, even without access codes. We are seeking motivated, engaged community members who have experience with building and organizing children and young adult book collections, who have time to continue growing the Open eBooks collection through the end of 2016. Curation Corps members will select top content, highlight kid favorites, and help categorize titles to make them more discoverable inside the app. If you are interested in helping us connect books to young readers, and you have expertise in this area, please consider being a member of our Ebook Collection Curation Corps. Applications are due Friday, April 1. We will announce the second class of Collection Curation Corps in April 2016. Apply to the DPLA Curation Corps Questions about the Curation Corps? Email us. Open eBooks is a partnership between The New York Public Library, DPLA, and First Book, with assistance from Baker & Taylor, and made possible by generous commitments of publishers with funding support provided in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. Beloved children's book author Beverly Cleary was born on April 12th, 1916, in McMinnville and raised in Portland. As a librarian, Cleary learned that elementary school children were looking for and struggling to find books about kids like themselves. In 1950, Cleary published her first book, Henry Huggins, which is about a boy, his dog, and his friends who live in the Hollywood neighborhood in Portland. Since then, Beverly Cleary has published over 40 children's books, most of which are still in print and relevant to kids today. She has won many literary awards, including the John Newbery Medal for Dear Mr. Henshaw and Newbery Honors for Ramona Quimby, Age 8 and Ramona and Her Father. Her most recent book, Ramona's World, was published in 1999. Beverly Cleary now lives in California so she can be near her family. Many elementary school libraries will be celebrating Beverly Cleary's 100th birthday by participating in "Drop Everything and Read" (D.E.A.R.). It is a national reading program many schools participate in every year during the month of April. The D.E.A.R. reading program started after Beverly Cleary first wrote about it in Ramona Quimby, Age 8. Most public libraries will be celebrating Beverly Cleary's 100th birthday the week of April 12th. Contact your local public library to find out what activities they have planned and when they are taking place. The Oregon Library Directory is available online at: http://libdir.osl.state.or.us/. OPB is celebrating with an Oregon Art Beat special "Discovering Beverly Cleary"-the first-ever documentary about the author. It includes a rare, new interview with Beverly Cleary herself! Watch the special on Thursday, April 7th on OPB TV or online at: www.opb.org/beverlycleary. ________________________________ Katie Anderson, Youth Services Consultant Library Support and Development Services Oregon State Library, 250 Winter St. NE, Salem, OR 97301 katie.anderson at state.or.us, 503-378-2528 [cid:image004.png at 01D0358C.4523C4D0] [http://www.thewwwblog.com/images/blogger-logo.jpg] [http://www.aethlonmedical.com/assets/001/5130.png] [Picture] -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
