[kids-lib] Invitation to join an Ad hoc CSLP Committee about free food sites and summer reading at public libraries

I know most of you do outreach to free Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) sites and many of your libraries are free food sites. Therefore, I thought a few of you might be interested in serving on the national Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP) ad hoc committee that will be investigating the following questions (more details below):

·         How do libraries measure the results of SFSP participation?

·         How does SFSP participation meet the mission of the library?

·         What does successful SFSP participation imply for library involvement in other aspects of child welfare?

Remember, if you work at a CSLP member library you may join CSLP committees. All public, volunteer, and tribal libraries in Oregon are CSLP members. CSLP committee work is done virtually. This ad hoc committee will be giving a presentation at the CSLP Annual Meeting, but only a couple people will actually present so you don’t need to be there. They are looking for representation from many states, geographies, and diverse demographics.

Hello State Reps,
As many of you know firsthand, many children and teens lack stability, supervision, and good nutrition during the summer. While anecdotal stories abound, an evidence-based case to support public library child welfare activities has not firmly been made. Also, awareness of how libraries might address these issues in their communities is not widespread, and differences in opinion exist on the role libraries should play.
The rapid growth of library participation in the USDA’s Summer Food Service Program points to shifting attitudes and practices in this area, and also to the challenges ahead. How do libraries measure the results of SFSP participation? How does SFSP participation meet the mission of the library? What does successful SFSP participation imply for library involvement in other aspects of child welfare?
To help librarians sort out these issues, we are creating an ad hoc committee tasked with creating a presentation on this topic for the 2018 CSLP annual Meeting.
The presentation will include:

•       Identifying, accessing, and understanding the data on child indicators during the summer. Do they support library involvement?

•       Expressing the range of opinions by library administrators, librarians, and communities on the appropriateness/level of library support.

•       Presenting one or more ideas that can become deliverables, pending reception of presentation by CSLP Board & Membership.
The committee will be co-chaired by Janet Ingraham Dwyer (Library Consultant, OH) and Luke Kralik (Organizational Coordinator, CSLP)
We hope to have committee representation from various states and communities, representing the array of demographic and geographic factors impacting child welfare. State library youth services consultants will bring the wide view, and practitioners in direct public service will bring the on-the-ground realities. You are especially encouraged to extend this invitation to librarians in your state who are invested in or knowledgeable about child welfare.
