Hello library folks,

Thank you so much for coming yesterday to our Summer Reading and Weekly Check-in yesterday! It was great to see so many of you. I know not everyone who wanted to could get into the meeting. I ran into some restrictions trying to upload the meeting recording, but am working with our IT folks to get around these and hope to have the recording available as soon as possible. I will let you know when it's ready for viewing.

In the meantime, available right now in the Covid-19 folder<https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1lT-Yjgmge83c9-Q-hCnr4w12T66JcQwB?usp=sharing> is:

* Summer Reading 2020 Folder<https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1gxHDx1ilmd7Po98ZrLHdpSYAhvyiY7oI?usp=sharing> - Presentation Notes with Chat Notes at the End, Presentation Slides, Editable Doc if you want to share ideas, & an iREADS Power Point presentation I just got this morning.

*        Weekly Check-in Notes<https://docs.google.com/document/d/1JKf5IS476XORCmunpRnm7_fLXcqOfbGj4tj7Gstpdug/edit?usp=sharing>

I especially wanted to thank Bryce from WCCLS for bringing up that accessibility is not limited to the digital divide. I am, like all of us, continually learning and growing. Please don't hesitate to point out where we need to expand our perspectives to be able to serve the public better - it can only help us all!

Lastly, Rose from Sweet Home sent me the below e-mail about Internet Access in Oregon. Looking at Sweet Home's stats, even though the percentage of homes without Internet is small, it is a significant number of folks in the community, many of whom Rose probably knows. Even if the number of folks who do have access in your community is high, I was just on a call this morning with Early Learning Division folks helping schools roll out devices and online learning. These folks normally work in/with the Early Learning hubs. Every single person mentioned a huge portion of their work the past couple weeks and for the next two going forward is basic internet instruction for parents and caregivers - how to get it setup, how to log into a classroom, etc - it was a good reminder to not assume that just because folks have Internet access means they know how to use it. This may be a difficult thing for us to keep in mind as information professionals used to having so much right at our fingertips, but we can't assume everyone is like us or has access to all that we do.

Take good care,

Greta

Greta
I reached out to the FCC to see if they had statistics on Internet availability in Sweet Home. Below is the reply if you want to share this with other libraries.

Good afternoon Ms. Peda,

The best source of information on broadband subscriptions for a particular city would be the American Community Survey (ACS). This is an annual household survey administered by the United States Census Bureau. For 2018, the ACS reported that Sweet Home, Oregon had a population of 12,407 people living in 4,649 households. Of these households:

* 984 households (21.1%) do not purchase internet access from an internet service provider.

* 449 households (9.7%) can only access the internet via a mobile phone subscription.

* 29 households (0.6%) can only access the internet via a dial-up connection.

* 3,187 households (68.5%) can access the internet via a wired or satellite broadband connection.

Additional information on the ACS, including a listing of other data that is collected, can be found here: https://www.census.gov/programs-surveys/acs. Hope this helps. Please let us know if you have any follow-up questions.

Sincerely,
Suzanne Mendez
