Please pardon the cross-posting.

Staff at the State Archives asked for help to promote the Oregon Blue Book essay contest with elementary and middle school students. The essays are more like paragraphs, with a word count of 100 to 250 words. Entries are due October 22nd, and details are online<https://sos.oregon.gov/blue-book/Pages/explore/exhibits/essays-2021/enter-contest.aspx> and below.

Also, a representative from the Oregon State Literacy Association asked me to share about the Patricia Gallagher Picture Book Award. This is a children’s choice award, and students of all ages can vote through library staff or a teacher for their favorite nominee by May 1, 2021. The website<https://www.oregonread.org/projects-and-grants/patricia-gallagher-awards> and flyer<https://drive.google.com/file/d/1OTdUtAF43CzZlZRwJilXCSkfSSFKBYdQ/view> have the details, and there’s also an activity guide<https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1r4-xwsY_x2guQ-BP3gssJuXGr_osFEQ4dQtqo5y5S7o/edit#slide=id.g35ed75ccf_0141> for each book.

Participating in the Patricia Gallagher Picture Book Award is similar to participating in the Beverly Cleary Children’s Choice Award<https://ola.memberclicks.net/bccca-nominees> (voting happens in the spring) and Oregon Reader’s Choice Awards<https://oregonreaderschoiceaward.wordpress.com/about-2/> (ORCA) (voting happens in March).

Thanks for helping to spread the word.

Enter the Oregon Blue Book Essay Contest

Secretary of State Bev Clarno is pleased to invite all Oregon elementary and middle school-aged students to participate in the 2021–2022 Oregon Blue Book Essay Contest.

Essay Topic

What is your favorite state park in Oregon and why?
Please illustrate your essay with a drawing.

About the Contest

Oregonians have been visiting and enjoying state parks for nearly one hundred years. Our state parks are part of what makes Oregon great. That they exist is a testament to what Oregonians value. Next year we will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the opening of Oregon’s first state park. The 2021–2022 Oregon Blue Book will celebrate it and all of Oregon’s state parks.

Contest winners’ essays and drawings will be included in the next edition of the Oregon Blue Book, and they will be invited to the State Capitol for the official Oregon Blue Book release party and celebration in early 2021.

Teachers, please consider making this a classroom project for both your spring 2020 class and your fall 2020 class!

How to Enter

Each essay must be identified with the student’s name and grade, teacher’s name, school’s name, and school’s address. Please encourage your students to illustrate their essays.

Word counts for each essay should be between 100 and 250 words. Essays should focus on parks that are part of the Oregon State Parks system.
