OBOB Program Modifications for 2021-2022

The Oregon Battle of the Book’s mission is to encourage and recognize students who enjoy reading, to broaden reading interests, to increase reading comprehension, promote academic excellence, and to promote cooperative learning and teamwork among students.

We are still facing the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic as we enter the 2021-22 OBOB season. As always, the health and safety of our students, volunteers, educators, communities, and families continues to be a top priority for OBOB.

Like all organizations we have to make decisions for the future when the future is unknown. The OBOB Executive Board has decided to move forward with the 2021-22 season as detailed below. Please keep in mind that we will continue to comply with the guidance of the Oregon Health Authority and Oregon Department of Education, which is subject to change.

The OBOB Executive Board has decided on the following for the 2021-22 season:

● Registration for schools and public libraries opens on September 1, 2021 and ends October 31, 2021.

● Registration will give access to local/school-level competition questions. Practice questions are not provided by OBOB.

 ● Registered schools and public libraries will be grouped into mini-regions by OBOB administration. Every mini-region must have a regional manager for the teams to compete and send a team to the State tournament. If you would like to volunteer as a Regional Manager for a mini-region (of approximately 20 teams), you can indicate it on your OBOB Registration or email your request to oboblsta at gmail.com<mailto:oboblsta at gmail.com>.

 ● All Regional tournaments will be virtual this year. OBOB will provide guidelines and rules for the virtual tournament structure. To keep competitions consistent and fair, all regionals must be conducted following the official OBOB guidelines, which will be updated in the handbook to reflect the virtual battle format for this year only. As virtual battles, regionals will not be likely to be completed in a one-day format. All regional competitions will need to start no sooner than March 1st and end no later than March 25th .

● It is our hope and goal to have an in-person State Tournament in the spring, but keeping changing COVID protocols in mind, we are unable to guarantee that we will be able to do so.

The Executive Board will keep the school/library OBOB Coordinators apprised of any modifications that must be made in the event that state and school regulations change.

As a board, we recognize that many of you may be feeling disappointment with the virtual structure for regionals, that State can’t be guaranteed, or that the OBOB season will not proceed as normal. We truly empathize.

The pandemic has brought disappointments and unwanted changes in all aspects of our lives. We hope you’ll find solace in the fact that all decisions are being made with the health and safety of children in mind.

We have another amazing list of books for kids to read and are looking forward to a great year of OBOB!

General updates will be provided through the OBOB website (www.oregonbattleofthebooks.org<http://www.oregonbattleofthebooks.org>),

the OBOB newsletter (https://www.oregonbattleofthebooks.org/subscribe-to-our-newsletter)

and the OBOB Facebook Group.
