iREAD® is always working to improve our summer reading program. Often, improvements are the result of a librarian’s suggestion: It’s why iREAD® is created “by librarians, for librarians.”

[https://mcusercontent.com/6e70654dccbd86e15c572ad55/images/fab4670c-8abf-3b64-4b71-197e8b738e96.png]This year, we received a request for some Spanish-language graphics in addition to the Spanish and English bookmarks and posters we already offer for sale, and we are pleased to offer them for download<https://ireadprogram.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6e70654dccbd86e15c572ad55&id=0d305477b6&e=c0a8f58de6>. Going forward, such graphics will be included in the Resource Guide along with the other reproducible spot art. Please keep in mind the copyright guidelines<https://ireadprogram.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6e70654dccbd86e15c572ad55&id=8018e891cf&e=c0a8f58de6> from the Resource Guide when using iREAD reproducible artwork.

In addition, we are seeking more Spanish-language programming and craft activities for future Resource Guides. Do you have ideas for programming and crafts for Spanish speakers? The theme for 2023 is “Find Your Voice.” The link for submitting ideas for the 2023 Resource Guide won’t be available until the Fall, but as you are going through Summer Reading 2021, set aside ideas that you can develop and have ready for submission!

Libraries across the nation are either preparing or have already started their summer reading programs. We are happy to share submissions from two libraries that sent us photos showcasing preparation and promotion of their summer reading program.

Kristina Jean Lareau, Head of Children's Services at the Ridgefield Library shares photos of their Storywalk map, coloring sheets and promotional fliers. The library uses the 2021 Reading Colors Your World graphics provided in the 2021 Resource Guide to create colorful, informative and fun summer reading materials.

Bloomington Public Library in Bloomington, IL has decorated their elevators and stairs to welcome patrons and promote the library summer reading program. What a fun way to explore the library! Rhonda Massie, Marketing Manager at the Bloomington Public Library shares some history of the project:

[https://mcusercontent.com/6e70654dccbd86e15c572ad55/images/a5fa4f33-08cb-d723-2b8b-6607239823c7.png]"We first applied a vinyl wrap to our elevator doors in time for Summer Reading in 2014 (Paws to Read), and we’ve done it every year since. This coincided with the hiring of a Library Associate who has a degree in graphic design.

We started applying vinyl to our stairs in 2015 when the Summer Reading theme was Read to the Rhythm. Each year, we change the artwork on the stairs in time for Summer Reading, and each year, we somehow incorporate the Summer Reading theme. That first year – 2015 -- the stairs looked like a piano and included the repeating words Do Rei Me Fa Sol La Ti Do.

The titles of the books named on the stairs for this year were determined by the Summer Reading Decorations Committee of the library.

Of note: Producing all these decorations combined with the regular day-to-day workload proved too much to ask of our Library Associate who holds that graphic design degree. About 5 years ago, we made the decision to hire a temporary graphic designer to work for approximately 10 weeks in the Spring to design and install our Summer Reading decorations. That’s the plan we currently follow."

Why not share those ideas with your colleagues from other states?

Have you conducted a summer reading showcase for your library, library system, or statewide? Share those ideas and showcases with iREAD and we will feature them in a future newsletter. Photos, creative flyers, or other promotional ideas are also welcome! Please submit those as well with a short description.

Now that we are in the midst of summer reading, photos of how your summer reading program is going are highly encouraged.
