Please pardon the cross-posting. Hi. As you know, book challenges in school (and other) libraries are on the rise. This week, the Oregon Department of Education released updated guidance about addressing challenged materials. I thought you might be interested in the guidance. Also, some of you work with the K-12 schools in your area, and it would be great if you could help spread the word. Details are below. - Thanks, Jen

Subject: Addressing Challenged Materials: Updated Guidance from ODE

Please pardon the cross-posting.

[cid:image004.jpg at 01D968B3.D4845FA0]Hi Folks,

Tina Roberts, Language Arts Education Specialist at the Oregon Department of Education (ODE), and I partnered on an update to ODE's challenged materials guidance for Oregon school districts. Many people were consulted during the process, and the new guidance document was posted this week. Addressing Challenged Materials in K-12 Education: Guidance to School Districts<https://www.oregon.gov/ode/educator-resources/standards/ELA/Documents/Addressing%20Challenged%20Materials%20in%20K-12%20Education_%20Guidance%20to%20School%20Districts.pdf> is available on the ODE Library Media<https://www.oregon.gov/ode/educator-resources/standards/library/pages/default.aspx> and English Language Arts<https://www.oregon.gov/ode/educator-resources/standards/ELA/Pages/default.aspx> webpages as well as the State Library's School Library Services<https://www.oregon.gov/Library/libraries/Pages/School.aspx> webpage. Today ODE announced the updated guidance to Oregon superintendents, curriculum directors, school principals, and a few other groups.

The guidance is aimed at school districts, but the recommendations section has specific information for districts, administrators, classroom teachers, and school library staff. The information should prove helpful for private schools, too. In an effort to be proactive and prepared for potential challenges to library and other school materials, I encourage you to review the document and to share and discuss it with building or district staff. Page 1 provides background and includes a table of contents.

As a side note, ODE staff were gracious and included this P.S. in their announcement:
P.S. This release happens to coincide with National School Library Month<https://www.ala.org/aasl/advocacy/slm>. The Oregon Association of School Libraries developed the Oregon School Library Standards and Grade-Level Learning Goals<https://www.oaslstandards.org/> and Strong School Library Rubric<https://ola.memberclicks.net/rubric> to help administrators and other staff understand the role of school libraries.

In addition to her language arts duties, Tina is the first point of contact at ODE for school library questions related to compliance and more. Recently she revamped ODE's Library Media webpage<https://www.oregon.gov/ode/educator-resources/standards/library/pages/default.aspx>. Take a look! Thanks to Tina for her work on behalf of Oregon school libraries. Much appreciated.

If you have questions about the ODE guidance or need support for a materials/book challenge, please reach out.

Thanks,
Jen
