Subject: [oasl-all] Picture Books featuring DEI Themes

Hello Colleagues,
I have started a really fruitful program for K-2 families this year. We call it Tikkun Olam Layeladim which is Hebrew for "Our Young Children Heal the World." The gist of the program is I send home a picture book a week to participating families that feature big DEI topics such as race, LGBTQ, ability, socioeconomic differences, etc. I include a discussion guide with questions and thoughts for parents to consider before and during the reading. Essentially we just want to provide families a conversation starter to approach these topics with their kids. It gives them the entry point to start the conversation and to begin sharing their values with their child. I like to joke (in the context of the greater societal dischord) that I am not "indoctrinating" their children, they are!

If you are interested you can see the 10 titles we featured this year on this list<https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/19VgtoMp0wp8TUWREYoHO3Y2dJkYu8BBY80jCa6rC0yY/edit?usp=sharing>. I am reaching out to you, my esteemed library colleagues, to hear what your favorite picture books on these topics are. We'd like to continue the K-2 program next year with 10 new books and we'd also like to expand the program to grades 3-5 so we're interested in those picture books for older kids--the Patricia Polacco/Eve Bunting kind as well. This is my running list<https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1HrI1MM4VfiEyY1FrhUSffJ9RaevP9d0QsHZsRDw3dkY/edit?usp=sharing> of books to consider for next year. If you have any favorites please send them to me. I will gather the titles from our great collective brain and share the compiled list by the end of the year.

Thanks for sharing your favorite picture books that grapple with social justice topics.

Happy spring!
Molly
