Happy Friday, everybody!

Hope you are all enjoying the fall weather! In Salem the rainy week has finally turned to sun for the weekend and I’m so happy about it!

I’m forwarding the Oregon ASK newsletter below because 1) they are hosting a conference November 8th in Canby that looks like it could be pretty helpful for youth-serving library staff, AND there are some scholarships available for those serving 35,000 or less – that’s a LOT of you! If interested, please e-mail amber.lomascola at oregonask.org<mailto:amber.lomascola at oregonask.org> to request a scholarship application. And 2) Their Indigenous Recognition series may also be of interest – at the moment you must register for the whole series, but after the October 23rd session, it will be possible to register for individual sessions. The December 3rd session will be presented by staff from the National Museum of the American Indian Native Knowledge<https://americanindian.si.edu/nk360/lessons-resources/search-resources> team, focusing on Pacific NW tribes.

Now onto shoutouts:

  * I love this pick a book based on the monster<https://www.facebook.com/chetcolibrary/posts/pfbid0CtsCXqaM9WBX6T7wb2LkUKUAksg2SPJQhsiRYe3rcrbwxuNFfzZfm3iMJ3netHbLl> happening at Chetco!
  * Two libraries beginning with “H” have new space to show off: Hillsboro’s refreshed kids’ space<https://hillsboronewstimes.com/2025/10/02/hillsboro-brookwood-library-childrens-area-reopens-with-refresh/> and Hermiston’s overall renovation<https://hermistonherald.com/2025/10/01/celebrate-reopening-the-hermiston-public-library-on-oct-10/>, including adding a makerspace and expanded kid and teen areas!
  * Willamina is doing a super fun fall scavenger hunt<https://www.facebook.com/WillaminaOregonPublicLibrary/posts/pfbid02bu5tncGoc7Co6urTRJncrwex4cg8DAELoMs7d9Lp4VhtBK8s5DhhaXXXbPSh48mZl> highlighting their local elementary teachers.
  * Woodburn is hosting spooky teen options<https://woodburnindependent.com/2025/09/25/woodburn-library-debuts-spooky-series-of-october-events-for-teens/> for October.

Per usual, there are WAY TOO MANY GOOD THINGS TO HIGHLIGHT HERE! Thanks for all the work you’re doing. I hope you all have a great weekend! Please remember you are free to book time with me at any time convenient for you by using the booking link below my signature.
Best,
Greta

Federal Policy News Updates from the Afterschool Alliance

A potential federal government shutdown on October 1, 2025 could result in discretionary programs experiencing staff furloughs or layoffs, and potentially threaten the stability of programs like 21st Century Community Learning Centers and summer learning programs. The Afterschool Alliance is monitoring federal shutdowns as well as legislative and administrative actions, including the withholding of funds by the Office of Management and Budget.

Potential funding cuts will negatively impact youth and their families. Contact your members of Congress and voice your support for afterschool programs. Your voice matters.
