Thanks,
Lydia

Two Exciting NACCHO Webinars Next Week

Best Practices for Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) and Implementation Strategy Development
CDC intends to develop a framework on best practices in CHNA and implementation strategy/plan development, execution and evaluation for improved community health outcomes. This is an opportunity to align parallel processes, including the CHNA activities of charitable hospitals required under the Affordable Care Act, the national accreditation of public health agencies, and assessment activities of community health centers and other local stakeholders.

The webinar on July 6th, 2011 at 2:00PM ET is one of several opportunities for NACCHO members to provide input and feedback on this initiative. The webinar will also update LHDs on additional opportunities for participation and input. Additional information from this program and the July 11-13th public forum will be compiled in a report that CDC will issue later this year.

What's New with Accreditation?
The first of a two-part webinar focused on the Public Health Accreditation Board's voluntary national accreditation program , "What's New with Accreditation?" is scheduled for Thursday, July 7th at 2:00PM ET.

Materials for the launch, including version 1.0 of the standards and measures, the fee schedule, and the accreditation process, will be available shortly, in advance of this webinar. This 90-minute program, the 19th in NACCHO's Accreditation Preparation & Quality Improvement series, is intended for local health departments (LHDs) seeking to understand these documents and learn more about PHAB.

Kaye Bender, President and CEO of PHAB, will share information about the standards & measures for accreditation, the accreditation process, the prerequisites to applying, accreditation incentives, and the fee structure. She will also respond to live questions from the participants. Additionally, NACCHO staff will present an introduction to technical assistance resources available to LHDs.

Don't miss this exciting opportunity to be among the first to hear the 'hot off the presses' details about PHAB accreditation and the assistance available for your health department. Registration is limited, and available only on a first-come, first-served basis, so register NOW.
Accreditation and QI Sessions at NACCHO Annual

If you are planning to attend NACCHO Annual in Hartford, CT this month, be sure to visit the sessions relating to accreditation and QI. There are several sharing sessions that focus on these topics including:

Public Health Accreditation: Improving the Quality of Services (Thursday, July 21 10:00AM)
Speakers include Kaye Bender, President and CEO of PHAB, Rex Archer, a local health official and PHAB board member, and Toho Soma, a PHAB beta test site accreditation coordinator. They will share first-hand insight into the accreditation program. This session will discuss the benefits of accreditation, processes used to undertake the self-assessment and site visit, and the relationship between accreditation and quality improvement (QI). Participants will also learn how an LHD used QI techniques to improve upon a priority area realized through the PHAB self-assessment to decrease the no-show rate at their HIV clinic.

Cross-Jurisdictional Sharing of Services: Untapped Potential or Achilles' Heel? (Thursday, July 21 3:30PM)
Many hail cross-jurisdictional sharing of services as an excellent strategy to shore up governmental public health capacity at the local level and to encourage smaller agencies to apply for national voluntary public health accreditation. Increasingly, however, this strategy has served primarily as a cost-cutting measure. A new report examining the issues, perceptions, potential readiness, and barriers to cross-jurisdictional service sharing provides the foundation for this session. Participants will discuss with the report's author the potential benefits and drawbacks posed by shared service arrangements, the implications of elected officials' historically poor understanding of public health, and messages and strategies to inform decisions positively regarding shared services for local governmental public health.

Using Quality Improvement as a Strategy to Improve LHD Strategic Planning (Thursday, July 21 3:30PM)
This session will describe the practical application of the quality improvement (QI) process in developing successful strategic plans. Strategic planning can be tedious and a bit overwhelming, but a strong strategic plan can assist an organization in executing its mission and achieving its vision. Speakers from the Central District Health Department in Boise, Idaho will describe the process they undertook at their LHD to develop a model for strategic plan development, strategic plan, and tracking tool using the QI process.

5th Annual Performance Improvement Reception (Thursday, July 21 5:00PM)
Please join us for the 5th Annual Mobilizing for Action through Planning and Partnerships (MAPP), National Public Health Performance Standards Program (NPHPSP), and Public Health Accreditation Reception. Share your experiences, learn from others, and get to know fellow practitioners working on quality and performance improvement and accreditation. The reception is hosted by NACCHO's performance improvement teams and the public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB), and will feature peer experts and resources to help you work on performance improvement in your community and prepare your agency for accreditation. This reception is open to ALL conference registrants; refreshments will be served; there will be a cash bar.

Quality Improvement Certificate at the University of Minnesota
Domain 9 of the Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB) standards relates to quality improvement (QI) activity in LHDs. The University of Minnesota School Of Public Health offers an online certificate program intended specifically for health departments to be fully competent in meeting and exceeding the requirements for Domain 9. The program is designed for working professionals in public health QI. This 12-credit certificate can be completed part-time in five terms, and the program offers students the opportunity to lead a QI effort at their own organization.
