FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
MaryKay Dahlgreen, Oregon State Library's Youth Services Consultant has
been awarded The Evelyn Sibley Lampman Award by the Children's Services
Division of the Oregon Library Association.
Corvallis, OR - April 25, 2003 - At the Oregon Library Association's
annual conference, the Evelyn Sibley Lampman Award was given to MaryKay
Dahlgreen. This award was established in 1982 to honor a living Oregon
author, librarian, or educator who has made a significant contribution
to Oregon and the Pacific Northwest in the fields of children's
literature and/or library services. It is awarded annually by the
Children's Services Division of the Oregon Library Association. The
award is given in memory of Evelyn Sibley Lampman (1907-1980), noted
Oregon teacher, journalist, and author of children's books. The award
presentation was made at the Evelyn Sibley Lampman Breakfast during the
Conference.
MaryKay has a deep commitment to advocate for library youth services,
which she has done as the Oregon Youth Services Consultant at the Oregon
State Library. MaryKay provides many programs for children's librarians
in the state, such as a three-day institute, "Focus on Children and
Young Adults" for non-degreed librarians and "Mother Goose Asks Why?"
which has touched hundreds of low-income families. She has helped to
establish First Book Local Advisory Boards in both Salem and Corvallis.
She has staffed and advocated for the Oregon Center for the Book and is
a member of the Literary Arts Advisory Council. She is currently an
American Library Association councilor and will be serving on the 2004
Caldecott Committee. Her work with children's librarians all over the
state by supporting, encouraging, and challenging them has improved the
quality of youth services in Oregon.
