The University of Portland, a private Catholic institution of higher 
learning, is seeking applicants for the position of Acquisitions Technical 
Assistant in its W.W. Clark Memorial Library.  The library is team 
oriented with a rapidly changing environment.  The position requires 
flexibility and the spirit of cooperation within the team and the library 
as a whole.

The Acquisitions Technical Assistant reports to the Head of Technical 
Services and Collection Development and is responsible for placing firms 
orders in all formats.  Essential duties include searching the 
pre-acquisitions searching using the OCLC database, creation and 
maintenance of order records using Innovative Interfaces, selecting 
appropriate vendors for orders, playing a lead role with student 
employees and working closely with selection librarians and vendors to 
accomplish position goals.  The ideal candidate will have 1-2 years of 
college, with a degree preferred, and 1-2 years experience in automated 
library acquisitions.  Also required are a working knowledge of standard 
library systems and procedures as they apply to the position, the 
acquisitions and serials modules of an automated library system 
(preferably Innovative Interfaces), an online bibliographic utility 
(preferably OCLC), and microcomputer applications. Excellent interpersonal 
and communication skills, a demonstrable ability to work well with the 
team and the larger institution, and an ability to resourcefully respond 
to a changing work environment are essential.  Prior supervisory 
experience preferred.

Starting salary is in the $24,000 range, comprehensive fringe benefits 
package including tuition assistance is also provided.  Qualified
