EVERYBODY READS 2004 KICKS OFF JANUARY 7

PORTLAND, OR - When books burn, what else goes up in smoke? This
winter, thousands of adults and teens will explore the answers to this
question when they read Ray Bradbury's classic novel Fahrenheit 451 and
participate in Multnomah County Library's second annual Everybody Reads
project.
After her official welcome by the Board of County Commissioners, new
library director Molly Raphael will kick off Everybody Reads at an opening
celebration on Wednesday, January 7, 2004 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Central
Library, 801 S.W. 10th Ave. in Portland. Hundreds of copies of the book
will be on hand for easy check out, along with discussion guides, event
brochures and more at all Multnomah County libraries.
"Fahrenheit 451 provides a wonderful opportunity to explore many
issues that are of critical interest right now, including free access to
information and the impact of technology," says Penny Hummel, Everybody
Reads project director. Noting that the book depicts a terrifying future
where all reading is outlawed, she added, "Each day, libraries underscore
the importance of reading and the priceless value of intellectual freedom.
We look forward to exploring these topics during Everybody Reads 2004!"
The library has planned more than 90 events to take place in
libraries and other venues during January and February. These include
dozens of book discussions as well as literary events, community forums,
performances, youth events and film screenings.
The Everybody Reads event brochure will be available at Multnomah County
libraries, participating bookstores, Starbucks Coffee stores and Fred Meyer
stores. Additional information can be found at www.multcolib.org/reads/.
Everybody Reads is made possible by The Library Foundation, which raises and
