Memories Are Made Of This: Building a Local History Presence on the Web
Mike Boock, Head of Technical Services, OSU Libraries
The Cleveland Memory Project, consisting of over 10,000 digital images and texts, is the product of collaboration between several departments at the Cleveland State University Library to present electronic texts and images on the history of Northeast Ohio over the web. It is an example of what a medium-sized state-supported urban university can accomplish to reach out to new audiences, reach patrons in new ways, and implement new technologies. Mike will describe the reasons for providing local history information on the web, the issues involved in selecting and processing materials, how responsibilities were dispersed throughout the organization, and how departments were organized to take on the new work. He will also provide an overview of designing and implementing a web-based catalog of local history images and information and demonstrate the final product.
