Oregon colleagues:

I am happy to announce the inauguration of a brand new reference tool for
Oregon libraries. "Data for Local Communities"
<http://libweb.uoregon.edu/dlc> is an easy-to-use way to locate web-based
information about Oregon's cities, counties, watersheds, school districts,
and other sub-state areas. Users may query its database by topic or
keyword, and filter their results by the geographic level appropriate to
their needs (e.g. "test results" by school district; or "income tax" by
county). The resultant records describe and provide direct links to the
actual data held on State, federal or non-governmental web pages. In
addition to the database of web resources are useful links to sources of
statistical and geospatial data for Oregon communities, and a tool for
querying Orbis Cascade's Summit union catalog for writings about Oregon's
cities and counties.

Data for Local Communities was created by a team at the University of
Oregon Libraries, and is a project of the Orbis Cascade Alliance. It was
supported by a grant from the Oregon State Library, under the Library
Services and Technology Act (LSTA), a program of the U.S. Institute of
Museum and Library Services. We hope you will find this new resource
useful, and invite you to incorporate it into your repertoire of reference
sources. We further hope you will submit suggestions for additions to the
database; there is a convenient form for this purpose.
