General Statement of Duties
Accurately performs a variety of detailed technical paraprofessional and
moderately complex clerical duties in the acquisition of library materials
and exercises some independent judgment.
Examples of Duties Performed--Duties may include, but are not limited to,
the following:
Performs complex activities to acquire library materials such as ordering,
receiving, claiming, and maintaining records on books and other library
materials. Develops and maintains files and record-keeping systems for
acquisitions activities.
Identifies and assists with the selection of acquisitions vendors, primarily
e-acquisitions resources; evaluates vendor performance and may recommend
changes.
Places orders for new or replacement titles with vendors using automated
system, maintains standing orders, checks incoming shipments against orders
and invoices, troubleshoots and resolves discrepancies, and routes materials
to cataloging stations.
Prepares invoices for payment. Maintains and updates procedures manuals for
assigned work flows. Employs strong communication skills, an ability to work
independently and with a variety of team members, and a positive and
constructive problem-solving attitude.
May assist with selection of bibliographic records for the database; may
create spine labels, add copies, and perform other inventory control tasks.
Troubleshoots library computer equipment and programs as necessary. May mend
and perform new processing of books and other materials as necessary. May
assist in training and directing clerks and volunteers. Supports and
respects diversity in the workplace. Performs other related duties as
assigned.
Qualifications
Knowledge of: Library acquisitions processes and procedures. Basic
bookkeeping principles. Manual and automated cataloging and/or bibliographic
systems and procedures. OCLC and MARC formats, Library of Congress subject
headings, and Dewey classification.
Ability to: Perform computer data entry. Experience with OCLC, CATME,
Windows OS and MS Word, Excel, Internet, and computerized acquisitions
systems preferred. Communicate effectively and work cooperatively with other
staff, volunteers, and the public. Work independently and accurately and
make judgments of moderate complexity within the framework of training and
local standards. Successfully manage and prioritize numerous simultaneous
tasks.
Understand and follow verbal and/or written instructions, document
procedures, and keep statistics. Develop and maintain files and
record-keeping systems. Lift and move boxes of books weighing up to 40 lbs.
Minimum Requirements
Experience One year of clerical experience in a library setting preferred,
including experience working with the public. Some library acquisitions
experience preferred. Education High school diploma.
Representation Employees in this classification are represented by American
Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), and their
salaries are subject to a monthly payroll deduction after 31 days of
employment.
Salary and Benefits
The normal starting salary is the first step shown on the posting. Other
placement in the salary range may be considered depending on qualifications
and experience. Periodic advancement through the salary range is dependent
upon merit. The City provides a full range of benefits, including holidays,
vacation, sick leave, retirement benefit, and life insurance. Health,
dental, and vision benefits are available. This insurance is paid in full or
in part depending on number of hours worked and plan selection. Employees in

GENERAL INFORMATION
The Oregon State Library is recruiting to fill the position of Librarian
assigned to the Government Research and Electronic Services team.
The primary role of Government Research and Electronic Services (GRES) is to
provide extensive and sophisticated research and information services,
consultation and referral services to state agency researchers and
information users, public officials, policy makers, Legislators, and staff.
The State Library also serves as a statewide resource for unique special
services in the areas of census and demographics, grants, and funding
information sources, Oregon and federal documents, Oregoniana,
Statesman-Journal indexing, and genealogy. The librarian in this position
works within the GRES Team of the State Library in providing customized
print, on-line, and other information services vital to the successful
operation of the Oregon State Government.
The purpose of this position is to provide specialized information services
for external and internal library clients, including consultative research
and reference work and training users to efficiently use information
resources. The Librarian analyzes, acquires, plans, coordinates, creates and
maintains information resources, often in specialized subject areas, at the
State Library or another state agency. This individual works in a team-based
organization and performs a variety of tasks as assigned or agreed to by the
team.
The Oregon State Library is an independent state agency governed by a
seven-member Board of Trustees appointed by the Governor. The State
Library's mission includes providing quality information services to Oregon
state government, providing reading materials to blind and print-disabled
Oregonians through Talking Book and Braille Services, and providing
leadership, grants, and other assistance to improve local library service
for all Oregonians through Library Development Services.

Operations - Plans, develops and delivers library services for an agency or
a major unit, including cataloging and classifying library materials,
building and maintaining in-house catalogs and electronic databases, and
searching and retrieving information in print and electronic format.
Evaluates print and electronic products, evaluates and acquires print and
electronic materials and disseminates information to clients.
Maintains and operates the library facility and systems. Builds general and
specialized collections of library materials and information resources by
reviewing, evaluating, and selecting resources in various formats and within
budget parameters for client use.
Creates, maintains and manipulates online library catalogs and other
electronic information systems to provide information service for staff and
agency clients. Enhances access points in electronic catalog records using
standard library control techniques. Develops, designs and maintains
in-house databases, working with clients and information systems staff.
Program/Project Coordination - Coordinates library programs, such as library
services for a special client population. Assesses program needs, plans
services in response to needs and evaluates use. Organizes projects, such as
preserving rare and unique materials and publications or overseeing a major
informational resource operation (e.g., creating a newspaper index or union
list of serials). Oversees daily operations of a specific program or
project, coordinating and guiding the work of staff and volunteers and
training staff and others.
Works with information systems staff to design, maintain and operate the
information systems for individual programs or the library. Explains user
needs and defines information content, data file needs and product
specifications. Provides input on software, hardware, and information
systems products. Works with library clients and information staff to
customize information products and services to solve user problems.
Miscellaneous - Participates in assessing needs, monitoring use of
resources, allocating funds and evaluating programs and services. Plans and
coordinates long-range marketing program aimed at reaching target clients.
Evaluates client satisfaction, needs and interests and encourages client
feedback. Edits and coordinates agency publications and newsletters.
Responds to requests for information from the public.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Typical office environment in shared office. Uses word processing,
spreadsheets, file compression/extraction, translation and other programs on
PC and/or Macintosh microcomputer. Uses typewriter, telefax machine, and
other office equipment; uses Internet access software and e-mail.
Communicates orally, in person and in writing with staff, agency customers,
professional colleagues and the public. Occasional lifting of library
materials and equipment, including extreme reaching up and down. Extended
periods of use and exposure to video display monitors. Conducts and attends
meetings which may require evening or weekend work.

The Office of the Secretary of State, Washington State Library Division,

project Principal Library Information Specialist vacancy. This position will
work in partnership with the Database Licensing Librarian for the Statewide
Database Licensing (SDL) Project, and will be a member of the Library
Development Program. The Library Development Program provides information
and services related to libraries, information services, and technology.
This is a federally-funded project position that is currently approved
through September 30, 2004.
Using in-depth knowledge of multi-type library cooperative practices, the
Principal Library Information Specialist acts as Project Manager for the
Statewide Database Licensing Project (SDL) and is responsible for planning
and implementing the project, and seeking alternative sources of funding. As
project manager of the Statewide Database Licensing Project, the Principal
Library Information Specialist works collaboratively with other SDL staff,
advisory committees, the Library Development staff, and the Library
Development program manager to assist libraries in cooperative purchasing of

New Director Announcement Director, International Falls Public Library,
International Falls, Minnesota. We are seeking a creative, service-oriented
individual to lead a dynamic public library with a reputation for
outstanding service to children and families. Situated in beautiful northern
Minnesota, International Falls Public Library is now completing a major
building renovation that will provide amazing new opportunities for library
service.
Our automated library enjoys an annual circulation of approximately 100,000.
The ideal candidate will have the passion, experience, and training to fully
capitalize on the library's forward momentum.
Required: an MLS from an ALA-accredited institution; a minimum of three
years professional experience in a public library, preferably in a
supervisory capacity; good communication skills; a general knowledge of
library automation; plus supervisory and administrative abilities.
Experience in collection development, programming for children and adults,
planning, and grant writing is preferred. Salary is a minimum of $44,000,
commensurate with experience, plus a good benefits package.

dynamic, experienced librarian to assist in the operations of the Vancouver
Mall Community Library. This full service library is located in southwest
Washington states largest shopping mall and serves the surrounding
community, is open 73 hours per week, and has a staff of 16 (12.40 FTE). It
is within short driving distance to magnificent ocean beaches, majestic
mountains, the Columbia River Gorge and metropolitan Portland, Oregon. The
successful candidate will assist the branch librarian in planning,
organizing and directing activities of the community library.
Requires an MLS from an ALA accredited university, 3 or more years of
increasingly responsible professional library work, supervisory experience
and experience working with children and teens highly desired. Salary range:
$3277-$4886 per month. FVRL offers an excellent benefits package, including
employer paid full family medical, dental and vision and Washington State
