Children¹s/Youth Services Reference Librarian. This is a regular, full-time

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: The Children¹s/Youth Services Reference
Librarian reports directly to the Library Director. Responsible for
developing and maintaining the children¹s collection in a variety of
formats; responsible for developing and implementing a variety of library
related recreational and educational programs for children and young people
of all ages; includes reference and reader¹s advisory services; catalogs and
classifies children¹s and young adult materials; works with the Library
Director to coordinate the Library¹s volunteer program; provides outreach
services to schools, preschools, and day care facilities. Serves as a member
of the library management team.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Comprehensive knowledge of public library
services for young people, knowledge of library materials and selection
criteria for children and young adults. Thorough knowledge of the Dewey
Decimal classification system of library materials; working knowledge of
equipment and facilities required in a comprehensive library system; working
knowledge of the principles and practices of office management, work
organization and supervision. Effective communication skills with children,
young adults and adults; ability to meet people easily and work effectively
with library staff; be imaginative and creative.
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Graduation from a college or university with a
Bachelor¹s degree in library science, liberal arts, public administration or
a closely related field. A Master¹s degree from an American Library
Association accredited institution is preferred. One year experience working
with children and one year of supervisory experience in library operations
is preferred.

CLASSIFICATION: Full-Time Faculty
PURPOSE OF POSITION: To plan, coordinate, and direct all services and
operations of the Marylhurst University Shoen Library. Provide leadership by
performing short and long-term planning for the Library, including
developing, implementing and evaluating library services.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Establish policies, procedures, and standards for the efficient and
effective operation of the Library, including collections, reference,
circulation, acquisitions, cataloging, on-line systems, computer labs,
bibliographical controls, interlibrary loan, and maintaining consortia
memberships and agreements. Support library instruction program.
Oversee and coordinate systems and processes to meet the library
informational needs of students, faculty, staff, consortia members, and the
community, to provide quality service to meet those needs.
Ensure Shoen Library cooperation, participation and leadership in local,
state, regional, and national library groups and consortiums. Participate on
committees and boards.
Assess collection, equipment, facility, personnel, and new service needs of
the Library and develop recommendations and plans for implementation of
automated systems.
Oversee the development of the library collection, including housing,
maintenance, and preservation to support the University curriculum.
Lead and develop a strong library staff through selection, supervision,
development, and evaluation. Supervise and schedule employees to ensure
adequate coverage and support during open hours. Work scheduled hours at
reference desk on a weekly basis.
Oversee the finances of the Library by monitoring all fiscal operations,
such as preparing the annual budget and approving departmental expenditures,
including annual serials renewals.
Manage library-building operations, including implementing staff procedures
to ensure the security of the collection, computer labs, and building. Work
with the Facilities Department to plan for short and long-term building
needs and capital improvements.
Work with the Office of Institutional Advancement to develop external
resources and relationships to support Shoen Library¹s programs, including
assisting in fundraising and grant writing opportunities.
Coordinate and participate in Friends of Shoen Library. Serve on University
committees and task forces, including University Faculty Council.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:
Master¹s in Library Science (MLS) from an ALA accredited school required.
Doctorate or subject Master¹s degree preferred.
Five years of progressively responsible management experience in an academic
library exhibiting excellent planning and organization skills.
Broad knowledge and understanding of library science, including history,
trends, and current issues.
Demonstrated ability to lead and manage a library staff of approximately 8
employees, in addition to a pool of work-study students.
Excellent leadership and interpersonal skills with demonstrated
effectiveness relating to and communicating with various internal and
external constituents.
Demonstrated ability to manage fiscal resources of approximately $700,000,
including experience in budget preparation.

Portland State University is seeking a progressive and energetic
professional for the position of Cataloging and Database Management
Librarian. This is a full-time, 12-month, tenure track position with the
rank of Assistant Professor. The professional in this position will work
toward enhancing the quality of Millar Library¹s online catalog by
creating and adding new records to the system; maintaining and updating
existing records; and identifying and implementing small- to large-scale
projects that would improve the scope and the scale of the system.
Specific responsibilities:
In accordance with national standards, performs original descriptive
cataloging, classification (using Library of Congress Classification
Schedules) and subject analysis (using Library of Congress Subject
Headings) as well as complex/difficult copy cataloging of English and
non-English-language materials in a variety of formats.
Inputs cataloging into the OCLC network and ViKat, PSU¹s
Innovative-based library management system. Assists in the completion of
PSU¹s retrospective conversion project. Creates NACO authority records for
name headings when appropriate. Participates in ongoing local name and
subject authority-related activities. Monitors MARC format changes and OCLC
format changes and ensures their incorporation into the cataloging workflow
and local systems.
Resolves daily inputting, editing, record replacement, and other
database problems. Serves as a resource for cataloging-related issues and
questions. Provides backup for the operation of ViKat. Loads records,
generates reports, and performs large-scale record editing and maintenance
as needed. Participates in planning and implementing the automation of all
areas of Technical Services.
Maintains up-to-date expertise via participation at workshops and
professional associations. Contributes to the work of relevant committees
and workgroups in the Millar Library and the PSU community of scholars.
Contributes to the work of professional associations, locally, regionally,
and nationally. Contributes to relevant scholarly activities. May supervise
lower-level staff and/or students.
Qualifications:
ALA-accredited master¹s degree in Library/Information Science or its
equivalent is required. A second master¹s degree is desirable. Minimum of
three years cataloging experience following national standards while
contributing records to a national bibliographic utility is required. Recent
experience is preferred. Experience in updating and maintaining records in a
medium or large library catalog database is required. Experience with
Innovative Interfaces, Inc. library system is highly desirable. Demonstrated
experience in creating authority headings according to national standards is
required. Knowledge of a second language is desirable. Effective
communication skills are essential.
A successful candidate also must have the ability to work and collaborate
effectively with colleagues in the Millar Library as well as the
University¹s faculty and students. Excellent interpersonal skills are a
must. In these changing times, flexibility, adaptability and the ability to
work in a dynamic and changing environment also are highly desirable
characteristics.
Salary and Benefits:
This is a full-time,12 month, tenure-track position with a minimum annual
1.0 FTE salary of $44,460 effective January 1, 2004. Full time benefits
include 22.5 paid vacation days and 12 paid sick leave days per year, a
choice of retirement and group health plans, and staff tuition rates.
Librarians are members of the
Academic Faculty and participate in University-wide faculty governance.
