FYI- new study from National Center for Education Statistics just released.

NCES has just released ‘Before- and After-School Care, Programs, and
Activities of Children in Kindergarten Through Eighth Grade: 2001.’ This
report provides insight into the complex and varied ways kindergarten
through eighth graders in the nation spend their time out of school. Some
spend time in with relative or a nonrelative in a home setting. Others
spend time in center- or school-based programs or organized activities
that are aimed toward their enrichment or enjoyment. Still others are
responsible for themselves during out-of-school time. Among the major
finding are:

Half (50 percent) of children in kindergarten through eighth grade
participated in some form of after-school care, program, or activity in
2001. In addition, 20 percent of children in kindergarten through eighth
grade had some form of before-school arrangement.

Children and adolescents who regularly participated in before- or
after-school programs spent an average of 10-hours per school-week in some
form of nonparental care.

A majority (55 percent) of children in center- or school-based programs
participated in programs sponsored by public schools.

Children living in single-parent households and households where mothers
worked full-time were more likely to have nonparental care arrangements
before and after school than children in two-parent households or
households where the mother worked less than full time or was not in the
labor force.
