GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
This position manages the daily operations of the Circulation and Collection
Maintenance unit in the Valley Library. The unit is comprised of classified
staff and part-time student assistants. The position is responsible for
maintaining circulation access to the library collection, assuring the
smooth flow of materials through the library and offsite storage facility,
and the physical maintenance of shelving resources. This is one of the more
sensitive public relations interface points in the library as it exists to
provide a direct service to Oregon State University students, faculty and
staff and has a direct impact on the availability of library materials.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
Reporting to the Head of Access Services, the Circulation and Collection
Maintenance Specialist plans and monitors the daily operation of the
Circulation desk and maintenance of the library collection; maintains policy
and procedure manuals; handles correspondence and responds to patron
inquiries and complaints regarding library policy and procedures; works at
the Circulation Desk providing assistance to patrons borrowing library
materials; analyzes the orderliness of the collection and coordinates
shelving, shelf-reading, and materials cleaning; measures and calculates
space needs for the collections; plans and implements shifting projects;
coordinates shelving equipment and supplies orders; plans and coordinates
the removal of materials to storage; gathers and maintains statistics
related to collection usage.

The Circulation and Collection Maintenance Specialist supervises classified
staff (7.0 FTE) and 20-30 student assistants; writes and reviews position
descriptions; hires staff and student assistants; assigns, monitors and
reviews work; writes performance evaluations; prepares staff and student
schedules to assure adequate coverage; plans for and/or provides initial and
ongoing training in customer service and collection maintenance.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum of two years supervisory experience, including hiring, scheduling,
training, and evaluating performance; previous management experience in a
public services environment. Also, demonstrated ability to: train and
supervise staff; maintain effective working relationships with coworkers;
manage multiple tasks and assign work; plan, implement, evaluate and report
activities; work collaboratively with individuals and small groups; strong
oral and written communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
Preferred: experience working in an academic library and in a team-based
setting; familiarity with library automated systems; demonstrated commitment
to promoting and enhancing diversity; Bachelors degree.

POSITION INFORMATION:
This is a full-time, 12-month, fixed term professional faculty appointment.
Renewal is at the discretion of the University Librarian. Salary

Specific responsibilities:
Cataloging: In accordance with national standards, performs original

and non-English-language materials in a variety of formats. Inputs
cataloging into the OCLC network and ViKat, PSU¹s Innovative-based library

Authority Control: Creates NACO authority records for name headings when
appropriate. Participates in ongoing local name and subject

systems. Resolves daily inputting, editing, record replacement, and other
database problems. Provides backup for the operation of ViKat. Loads
records, generates reports, and performs large-scale record editing and
maintenance as needed. Participates in planning and implementing the

Professional: Maintains up-to-date expertise via participation at workshops
and professional associations. Contributes to the work of relevant
committees and workgroups in the Millar Library and the PSU community of

May supervise lower-level staff and/or students.

Qualifications: ALA-accredited master¹s degree in Library/Information
Science or its equivalent is required. A second master¹s degree is
desirable. Minimum of three years cataloging experience following national
standards while contributing records to a national bibliographic utility is
required. Recent experience is preferred. Experience in large-scale database
maintenance for a medium or large library catalog is required. Experience
with Innovative Interfaces, Inc. Library system is highly desirable.
Demonstrated experience in creating authority headings according to national
standards is required. Knowledge of a second language is desirable.
Effective communication skills are essential. A successful candidate also
must have the ability to work and collaborate effectively with colleagues in
the Millar Library as well as the University¹s faculty and students.
Excellent interpersonal skills are a must. In these changing times,
flexibility, adaptability and the ability to work in a dynamic and changing
environment also are highly desirable characteristics.

Salary and Benefits: This is a full-time,12 month, tenure-track position
with a minimum annual 1.0 FTE salary of $44,460 effective July 1, 2004. Full
time benefits include 22.5 paid vacation days and 12 paid sick leave days

rates. Librarians are members of the Academic Faculty and participate in

Job Summary/Primary Responsibility:
The Assistant Librarian is responsible for fulfilling reference and
interlibrary loan requests in the field of natural resources (focusing on
fisheries). OCLC is the primary bibliographic utility. The Assistant

responsibilities include (and are not limited to) training patrons to

2. Coordinate all interlibrary loan requests by verifying citations in
bibliographic sources and entering requests in computer tracking system as
well as utilization of OCLC ILL (interlibrary loan) subsystem software
(Passport and WebILL).
3. Work with the Librarian by assisting with various library development
(esp. digital) and maintenance projects and other duties as assigned and as
appropriate to CRITFC and StreamNet goals and purposes.
4. Work with Library staff to assure smooth and effective operations by
creating and continually evaluating existing systems, resources, policies,
and procedures/methods.
5. In the absence of the Librarian, assumes responsibility for library
operations.
6. Work with the Library Technician by assisting with various projects.
7. Assist in cataloging library materials according to standard library
practice by using standard cataloging tools.

Job Requirements/Qualifications: Masters degree in Library or Information

Supervision Given: Supervision of Library Technician(s) and volunteers as

Working Conditions: Work is performed in an office environment with adequate
heating, lighting, and ventilation. Some privacy is provided for
concentration and phone conversation. Travel to other locations may be
required, although on an infrequent basis.

The work is sedentary. Work assignments are multiple and performed, at
times, under severe time constraints. Work usually involves limited physical
activity and will regularly require the use of computers, video display
devices and other related technology. Occasional evening or weekend work may

Head, Public Services Division, Position No. 83792, University of Hawai'i at
Hilo, Edwin H. Mookini Library, full-time, tenure track, general funds,
available July 1, 2004, pending position clearance and availability of
funds. The University of Hawaii at Hilo reserves the right to make an
appointment at a higher level where the selected candidate has demonstrated
qualifications and it does not conflict with hiring policies and procedures.

DUTIES: Reporting to the Associate Director and responsible for the overall
management, day-to-day operation, long range planning, and assessment of the
following services: Reference, library instruction, library
marketing/publicity, library environment, Website content/design, distance
learning support, Hawaiian Collection and Archives.

DUTIES ALSO INCLUDE BUT NOT LIMITED TO: Leading Public Services personnel
consisting of 3 librarians, 1 FTE support staff, student assistants and
volunteers; serving on the reference desk, including evenings and weekends
and on Library, University and UH system committees; teaching library
instruction classes, especially in disciplines related to collection
development responsibilities; assisting with resource generation through
grant writing and/or fund raising activities; preparing public
services-related communications to the campus; performing assigned
collection development responsibilities and working with other library units
to provide seamless service and access.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: At rank of Librarian II: ALA accredited MLS or
international equivalent. At rank of Librarian III: ALA accredited MLS or
international equivalent; 24 post baccalaureate credits in addition to the
MLS; at least 3 years of experience in public services in a college or
university library. At rank of Librarian IV: ALA accredited MLS or
international equivalent; 2nd masters degree in subject area; at least 7
years of public services experience in a college or university library.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: Evidence of appropriate and pr experience in
academic public services, including implementing effective user services
initiatives; excellent oral and written communication skills; proven and
successful ability to work effectively with colleagues in a team-based
environment, mentor staff, and resolve personnel issues; proven and
successful experience and skills in bibliographic instruction, with writing
library promotional literature and creating student resource materials and
with providing reference assistance (including electronic reference);
knowledge of best practices and current trends in the provision of excellent
library public services; ADA regulations related to patron access, teaching
methods and instructional design for information literacy and technological
trends for electronic public assistance; demonstrated ability to work
effectively with students, faculty, staff and colleagues in a multicultural
environment; experience with developing and assessing academic public
services through performance measures focused on student outcomes and
experience with grant writing and fundraising.

Pay Range: Librarian II: $32,640 - $48,312; Librarian III: $38,184 -
$56,520; Librarian IV: $46,452 - $68,760. To apply: Submit letter of
