  Position Announcement

*Portland State University* is seeking a progressive and energetic 
professional for the position of Reference Librarian / Instructor. The 
professional in this position provides reference and information 
services for PSU’s students and scholars as well as citizens of the 
local community. This position reports to the Assistant Director for 
Public Services and works closely with the Coordinator of Reference & 
Information Services. The position description is incorporated by 
reference in the Notice of Appointment, consistent with the practices 
outlined for fixed-term faculty in the current PSU-AAUP collective 
bargaining agreement (Article 18).

*Specific responsibilities:*

    * Participates at the Reference Station in the Research & Learning
      Center, assisting PSU’s students and scholars as well as citizens
      of the local community with information needs. Necessitates the
      abilities to listen actively, clarify and interpret questions, and
      be responsive. This is a key responsibility as the individual will
      be at the Reference Station 15 hours/week.
    * Contributes to instructional activities, assisting other librarians.
    * Other duties as delegated.

*Schedule:* Works a flexible schedule, including an evening and a 
Saturday or Sunday. Works Sunday – Thursday or Tuesday – Saturday. Other 
hours to be arranged with the Coordinator of Reference & Information 
Services.

*Qualifications:*

    * ALA-accredited master’s degree in Library & Information Studies is
      required.
    * Reference services experience, preferably in an academic library,
      is required.
    * Effective communication skills are essential.

      prefer active learning. Discuss some innovative practices, from
      theory or your own personal/professional experiences, that reach
      students with different learning styles in a classroom setting.

*Salary: *This is a 1.0 FTE, fixed-term, non-renewable, limited duration 
position with a 12-month annual salary of $36,000. Appointment period is 
September 1, 2004 through December 31, 2004.
