Reference Librarian/Instructor

Portland State University is seeking a progressive and energetic
professional for the position of Reference Librarian / Instructor. The
professional in this position provides reference and information services
for PSU's students and scholars as well as citizens of the local community.
This position reports to the Assistant Director for Public Services and
works closely with the Coordinator of Reference & Information Services. The
position description is incorporated by reference in the Notice of
Appointment, consistent with the practices outlined for fixed-term faculty
in the current PSU-AAUP collective bargaining agreement (Article 18).

 

Specific responsibilities:

 

Participates at the Reference Station in the Research & Learning Center,
assisting PSU's students and scholars as well as citizens of the local
community with information needs. Necessitates the abilities to listen
actively, clarify and interpret questions, and be responsive. This is a key
responsibility as the individual will be at the Reference Station 15
hours/week. Contributes to instructional activities, assisting other
librarians. Other duties as delegated.

 

Schedule: Works a flexible schedule, including an evening and a Saturday or
Sunday. Works Sunday - Thursday or Tuesday - Saturday. Other hours to be
arranged with the Coordinator of Reference & Information Services.

 

Qualifications:

ALA-accredited master's degree in Library & Information Studies is
required. Reference services experience, preferably in an academic library,
is required. Effective communication skills are essential.

Responsibilities will include coordination and supervision of the following
Technical Services functions: Acquisitions, Serials control, Copy cataloging
and Processing.
 
Manager also performs original cataloging and will help develop standards

Requirements:  MLS from ALA accredited institution, 2+ years experience
cataloging library materials in all formats, 1+ years experience supervising
library technical services staff. 
 
Preferences:  Experience using Innovative Interfaces Millennium software,
experience using MARC, Library of Congress subject headings and the Dewey
Decimal Classification System.  Experience cataloging electronic media
and/or experience with non-MARC Metadata schemes such as Dublin Core.
Experience using OCLCs ContentDM software.
 
Work environment:  Manager will work at PCC's Sylvania Campus Library.
Duties will require extensive work at a computer workstation and the ability
to lift and/or move sizable books or groups of books up to 30 pounds.
 
Salary:   $18.52 - $29.82/hr depending on experience, 30 hours/week, no

The Document Delivery/Interlibrary Loan Technical Assistant is responsible
for administering document delivery services for Distant Education students
as well as overseeing all borrowing and lending activities in the unit,

resources within the library to ensure rapid delivery of materials; planning
for & monitoring hardware & software enhancements & system upgrades. The
position is also responsible for writing & revising procedure manuals;
seeking ways of encompassing new technology (web-based and otherwise) for
delivering services; hiring, training & evaluating student workers who
perform all routine operations.  Starting salary for this position will be
in the $---25K range.  

Qualifications required: 

The ideal candidate will have a proven record of a positive service
orientation and ability to work well in a team situation.  Experience with
Document Delivery/Interlibrary Loan required, preferably in an academic
setting. Bachelor's degree preferred. Knowledge of computer applications
including Innovative Interfaces, Windows, the WWW, OCLC, Clio, Passport,
Word, Excel and Ariel.  Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and
the ability to deal with a variety of clientele in sometimes stressful
situations in a diplomatic and positive manner; the ability to work

position (40 hrs per week) within the Woodburn Public Library. An individual
within this position is responsible for the reference area in the youth

activities, evaluate data, and establish priorities; (2) learn and utilize
computer software programs such as word processing, desktop publishing, and
data base systems; (3) lift and move books and equipment; (4) pay attention
to detail while organizing materials according to alphabetical and numerical
classifications; and (5) operate variety of office equipment such as
personal computer, telephone,
facsimile, projector, copier, and laminator. 

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: BA degree in Library or Information Sciences
(master's degree preferred).  Also requires two years of library experience.
Bi-lingual skills in Spanish and/or Russian desirable.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES: Perform original and complex copy cataloging in a
wide range of formats, including monographs, serials, online resources, and
maps. Serve as a resource person/trainer for paraprofessional staff
concerning cataloging, database maintenance, and workflow issues. Assist in
the development and implementation of unit procedures and goals. Perform
liaison function with Public Services to insure effectiveness of the online

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES: Librarians are appointed as members of the
Washington State University faculty and are expected to participate actively
in the University's instructional, research, and service programs. All
privileges, obligations, and research responsibilities of faculty are
inherent in such membership. Librarians are ranked in grades 2, 3, and 4,
equivalent to the academic ranks of Assistant Professor, Associate
Professor, and Professor. A progressive record of professional/scholarly

QUALIFICATIONS: REQUIRED: ALA accredited degree. Minimum of three years of
cataloging experience, preferably in a research library. Knowledge of

The working title for this position is Cataloger. As a member of the
Technical Services Program and under general direction from the Senior
Library Information Specialist Cataloging Supervisor, this position creates
and updates authority and bibliographic cataloging data for all library
materials using a national bibliographic utility (OCLC).

 

Using independent, professional judgment this position creates and updates
authority and bibliographic cataloging data for all library materials of any
format in MARC record format applying the principles set forth in national
and international standards and guidelines such as AACR2R, LCSH, MFBD/AD and
DDC using a national bibliographic utility (OCLC). Works to insure the
accuracy of local (Innovative) bibliographic and authority records based on
OCLC records to provide service to staff and customers using the online
public catalog.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

Knowledge of and the ability to apply the principles set forth in AACR2,
LCRIs and the LCSH. Knowledge of and ability to code cataloging data in
accordance with the US MARC format. Knowledge of and the ability to search,
edit and input cataloging data into OCLC or other large bibliographic
database. Ability to sit at a computer and use a mouse and keyboard for most
of the day. Physical ability to bend, reach, stoop, and grasp library
materials. Ability to work in a team environment. Strong oral and written
communication skills. Understanding of classification systems and practices:
especially Dewey. Professional level knowledge of library principles and
practices. Strong analytical skills. Ability to be extremely attentive to
minute details. 

 

Highly Desirable:

One year experience using AACR2, LCRIs and the LCSH. One year experience
code cataloging data in accordance with the US MARC format. One year
experience cataloging data into OCLC or other large bibliographic database.

 

Qualifications Required:

A Master's degree in library science from an American Library Association
accredited program and certification by the State Librarian authorized
through the Office of the Secretary of State; or certification by
professional portfolio as authorized through the Office of the Secretary of
State;

 

AND, Two years of experience as a professional librarian.

 

COMPENSATION/BENEFITS Salary: Range 48, $2,911 - $3,727 per month. All
salaries are dependent on qualifications and Division Director approval.
