Just thought you might want some information on what is happening at ALA in response to requests from the Superintendent of Documents to remove and destroy some documents that are being help by depository libraries.

Subject: [ALACOUN:12765] Destruction of Government Documents

We are currently working on a statement regarding the instructions to
destroy a number of government documents issues by the public printer on
Monday. As Carol Brey-Casiano is currently representing the association
in Guatemala, we expect to have President Elect Michael Gorman issue a
statement tomorrow.

Attached is some legal background information on the issue prepared by
the Washington Office. Since this piece was completed, staff there have
been working on a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request. Under FOIA,
the DOJ must either provide the documents or provide reasons why they
should not be made available. Based on this response, legal action can
then be initiated by the Association and others, including requiring
release of the documents.
