Library Technical Assistant - Technical Services & Circulation

The University of Portland, a private Catholic institution of higher
learning is seeking a Library Technical Assistant in Collection Maintenance
and Circulation to join the staff of the W.W. Clark Memorial Library. The
library has a team oriented and rapidly changing environment and the
position requires flexibility and a spirit of cooperation within the team
and the library as a whole. The person in this position will work 3 days in
Technical Services and 2 days in Circulation on a Tuesday - Saturday
schedule.
Principle responsibilities in Technical Services include: maintaining the
book collection primarily through weeding & repairing books, associated
bibliographic research, database maintenance and record keeping. The
Collection Maintenance Technical Assistant also enters Union List changes in
OCLC and trains and supervises student assistants.
Principle responsibilities in Circulation include: supervising 3-6 student
workers in Circulation each hour; handling all training of new students on
Friday & Saturday shifts, overseeing shelving, shelf reading and trouble
shooting of all equipment. The Circulation Technical Assistant also opens
the library on Friday and Saturdays.
The ideal candidate will have a working knowledge of standard library
systems & procedures including a strong knowledge of computer applications
including Innovative Interfaces, OCLC, Windows, the WWW, Word, Excel and
Banner. Additionally, this candidate will possess excellent interpersonal
and communication skills, the ability to deal diplomatically & positively
with a variety of clientele in sometimes stressful situations and possess
the ability to work effectively with the UP community and the library
community at large. Physical requirements include the ability to move
through the stacks, retrieve books from library shelves, access catalog
drawers & move a loaded book cart. Prior supervisory experience preferred.
Bachelor's degree preferred.
Starting salary for this position will be in the $25K range. Comprehensive
fringe benefits package, including tuition assistance is also provided.

library automation software for cataloging activities (preferably Voyager),
and knowledge of authority control procedures. Qualifications: Masters

school; knowledge of cataloging standards (AACRII, LCSH, MARC21); excellent
computer skills including familiarity with library applications, as well as
knowledge of bibliographic and technical databases (eg. OCLC). Ability to

communication skills are also necessary. Reading knowledge of Latin and
German a plus. Salary based on education & experience.
Circulation Clerk: Mount Angel Abbey Library is seeking a part-time
circulation clerk to work 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Monday-Friday. Duties will
include: circulation of regular library items as well as ILL items,
collecting fines, book sale money, and photocopying fees, answering
inquiries of a nonprofessional nature, data entry in various programs, and
the training and supervision of student employees. Previous experience with
an automated library system, flexibility, and interpersonal skills required.

The position is funded through December 31, 2004. It may be extended

Manager will report to the Interim Director of PCC Libraries.
Responsibilities will include coordination and supervision of the following

and Processing.
Manager also performs original cataloging and will help develop standards

to lift and/or move sizable books or groups of books up to 30 pounds.
Salary: $18.52 - $29.82/hr depending on experience, 30 hours/week, no

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES: Perform original and complex copy cataloging in a
wide range of formats, including monographs, serials, online resources, and
maps. Serve as a resource person/trainer for paraprofessional staff
concerning cataloging, database maintenance, and workflow issues. Assist in
the development and implementation of unit procedures and goals. Perform
liaison function with Public Services to insure effectiveness of the online
integrated system.
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES: Librarians are appointed as members of the
Washington State University faculty and are expected to participate actively
in the University's instructional, research, and service programs. All
privileges, obligations, and research responsibilities of faculty are
inherent in such membership. Librarians are ranked in grades 2, 3, and 4,
equivalent to the academic ranks of Assistant Professor, Associate
Professor, and Professor. A progressive record of professional/scholarly
achievement is expected of all librarians.
QUALIFICATIONS: REQUIRED: ALA accredited degree. Minimum of three years of
cataloging experience, preferably in a research library. Knowledge of
authority control, AACR2R, MARC formats, Library of Congress classification
system, and subject headings. Demonstrated knowledge of trends in cataloging
and national standards for bibliographic control. Experience cataloging
using a bibliographic utility, preferably OCLC. Experience with integrated
library systems, preferably Innovative Interfaces, Inc. Strong communication
and organization skills.
DESIRED: Demonstrated knowledge of database maintenance issues and problems
in an academic online public access catalog. Working knowledge of at least
one foreign language.
SALARY: From $35,000 commensurate with qualifications and experience.
RANK: Librarian 2; faculty status.
