As the current Chair of the PORTALS Consortium in the Portland-Vancouver metro region, I am very happy to announce the appointment of Sheila Afnan-Manns as our new Director. Sheila will help chart the course for PORTALS as it takes on a larger role in continuing education and training throughout the state and SW Washington, and she will also be responsible for fundraising and staff support for this multi-type library consortium.
Sheila has extensive experience in project management, budget management, and grant writing in the nonprofit sector, including several library settings. Since June she has coordinated the Pacific Bell/UCLA Initiative for 21st Century Literacies at the UCLA Graduate School of Education and Information Studies in Los Angeles. Earlier in her career she served as the coordinator of the Catlin Gabel School capital campaign to raise money for various campus renovations, including the building of a new library and media center. She also served as the assistant manager for budget and statistics at the New York Public Library Office of Branch Libraries.
Sheila recently completed a M.L.I.S. from UCLA as well as internships at California State University, Long Beach, and at Sierra Madre Public Library. Her expertise in fundraising and grant getting, and her experience with both the academic and public library world, made her a perfect match for the needs of the new PORTALS. Please welcome her back to the Northwest after she officially starts her position here on March 25.
