Terry Reese, Oregon State University Libraries Cataloging Librarian for
Networked Resources, has been named a Mover & Shaker in the Digital
Masters category in the March 15, 2005 issue of Library Journal, a
leading journal of the library profession. The Movers & Shaker
nominations are collected annually from the library community to draw
attention to those who are significantly impacting the way libraries
operate and provide services.

Reese is being recognized for his skills in developing programming
applications that save staff time in performing routine tasks within the
library's online catalogs and services. His applications are freely
available to any library and are currently in use in libraries world
wide. Most notable is his improvement upon the Library of Congress's
MARC editing program available online as freeware which has been
downloaded by more than ten thousand users.

Terry has authored applications that assist reference librarians to keep
track of local data and events, and he has written programs to rapidly
update the library holdings of electronic journals with a "wizard" that
is used primarily with the EBSCO database of journals. He offers
consultant work pro-bono as a service to the library community, and he
is frequently called upon to present his ideas and applications to
various library and information technology gatherings. He answers from
80 to 90 questions weekly from his various programs' users.

Terry currently is working with methods to automate the harvesting of
metadata, making library and vendor systems interact better, and
extending the functionality of digital collections management software.

Although he concedes his skills are probably worth a lot more money in
the private sector, he feels empowered by the profession he has chosen
and the public service philosophy that it embodies. Reese says "... the
trade-off is the lack of freedom to pick the projects that I want to
work on."

Terry and his family live in Monmouth, Oregon.
