[Libs-Or] Fwd: Library Card

Our barcodes are imbedded in the card. As I said before, this is probably a
legitimate collector but it is good to be cautious for the very reasons
Meghan mentions. Library cards are accepted as a form of identification by
some and could be used to obtain other forms of identification to create an
identity.

My suggestion was that you send a card without attaching a barcode--if you
happen to be interested in contributing a card.

I guess you'll have to count me among the cynics for two reasons:
1) a legitimate barcode can give someone access to databases and
violate licensing agreements.
2) in Jackson County we offer a limited service card to people who
can't provide id. Maybe some of you have the same policy. A few years
ago the Medford police informed us that our limited service cards were
being used by criminals who used the library card to obtain a driver's
license in a false name, then used the driver's license to get a bank
account in a false name, then wrote bad checks all over town.

I also think this is a fun idea. And, being around many a 13 year old
on a regular basis I can think of any number of them that could write
this request. This whole discussion took place on PUBLIB in October
with one or two in November. It started with this message at
http://lists.webjunction.org/wjlists/publib/2005-October/094057.html
. The archive still is not easily searchable but you can sort October
2005 by subject and get the majority of the messages listed all
together.
Also, why do you have to send a card with a barcode attached? If your
name and logo are on the card it would not seem that a barcode was
necessary.

This message appeared in my email box today. I think it's wonderful! I
replied to Cory that I would send his message to libs-or in hopes that
some of you might be willing to send him your library card. Check out
his website! --> Jim
