The University of Portland, a private Catholic institution of higher
learning is seeking a Library Technical Assistant in Collection
Maintenance and Circulation to join the staff of the W.W. Clark Memorial
Library. The library has a team oriented and rapidly changing
environment and the position requires flexibility and a spirit of
cooperation within the team and the library as a whole. This person in
this position will work 3 days in Technical Services and 2 days in
Circulation on a Tuesday - Saturday schedule.
Principle responsibilities in Technical Services include: maintaining
the book collection primarily through weeding & repairing books,
associated bibliographic research, database maintenance and record
keeping. The Collection Maintenance Technical Assistant also enters
Union List changes in OCLC and trains and supervises student assistants.
Principle responsibilities in Circulation include: supervising 3-6
student workers in Circulation each hour; handling all training of new
students on Friday & Saturday shifts, overseeing shelving, shelf
reading, trouble shooting of all equipment. The Circulation Technical
Assistant also opens the library on Friday and Saturdays.
The ideal candidate will have a working knowledge of standard library
systems & procedures as they apply to the position including a working
knowledge of an integrated library system (preferably Innovative
Interfaces), an administrative software,(preferably Banner) and a
bibliographic utility, (preferably OCLC). Advanced computer skills with
working knowledge of computer applications necessary to the position
including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook). Additionally, this
candidate will possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills,
the ability to deal diplomatically & positively with a variety of
clientele in sometimes stressful situations and possess the ability to
work effectively with the UP community and the library community at
large. Physical requirements include the ability to move through the
stacks, retrieve books from library shelves, access catalog drawers &
move a loaded book cart. Prior supervisory experience preferred.
Bachelor's degree preferred.
Starting salary for this position will be in the $25K range.
