LIBRARY NEWS
JOSEPHINE COUNTY LIBRARY
COOS BAY PUBLIC LIBRARY
In response to input received during the library board planning
process, the library will standardize and slightly increase open hours
starting March 1. New hours will be 10-7, Monday through Thursday, and
noon to 6, Friday and Saturday. Another goal to come out of the planning
process was to provide more self-sufficiency for patrons who want it. To
that end, we've installed a new 3M SelfCheck machine, that immediately
became very popular, and the 3M Internet management system allowing for
automatic scheduling for patrons. Unfortunately, that system is not yet
working and 3M seems stumped. We'll keep you posted.
Library staff recently took the opportunity to bring about the
arrest of a man who was viewing child pornography on a library Internet
terminal, in violation, of course, of the law and of library policy. He
was on parole from a similar offense, and the police believe the library
provided evidence that will present a good case for conviction for both
the parole violation and a new crime. The staff is happy that our system
for proactively handling such incidents is working!
JACKSON COUNTY LIBRARY SERVICE
Jackson County Library Services and the Jackson County Library Foundation
are hosting an "everybody reads" event. We're all reading The River Why by
David Duncan. Each Branch will be having special events and mid April the
author (himself!) will be here for talks and discussions. Activities range
from fly fishing demonstrations, fish hatchery tours to Salmon mandalas and
fish art. Visit our web site for more details: www.jcls.org
Also, Oregon's Digital Library, "Library2Go" has started and everything is
either out or on hold. That's pretty good for 1 week!

HANNON LIBRARY, SOUTHERN OREGON UNIVERSITY
Southern Oregon History Collection Underway
Southern Oregon University (SOU) Hannon Library is partnering with the
Southern Oregon Historical Society, Jackson County Library Services, and
the Josephine County Library System to create a new digital Southern
Oregon History Collection. The collection will appear later in 2006 as
part of the Southern Oregon Digital Archives (SODA). Development of the
SODA History Collection is supported in whole or part by the Institute
of Museum and Library Services through the Library Services and
Technology Act, administered by the Oregon State Library. Materials
from collections of the partner institutions and SOU Hannon Library will
be digitized to create a ca. 250-item regional history database thus
far emphasizing the history of Jackson and Josephine Counties. The
grant runs from Feb. 1, 2006-January 31, 2007. We are interested in
increasing coverage of the history of counties westward to the southern
coast of Oregon in the future. For information, e-mail Kate
Cleland-Sipfle clelandk at sou.edu, or call (541) 552-6839.

We expect to begin working with an architect later this spring on the initial plans for a renovated and expanded Learning Resource Center (the building in which the library is housed.) This is the next step in the process that began last year with a services and space assessment, which was conducted by Drew Harrington Associates of Eugene.
Deniece Davis in our Technical Services department had her article published in the Winter 2005 issue of the OLA Quarterly. The entire issue deals with "A Day in the Life" of a diverse population of library workers. Deniece's article, "A Day in My Life" talks about how her experiences at work and as a rancher's wife intertwine.
Speaking of Technical Services, our search for the position of Technical Services and Collections Librarian has been reopened after a brief freeze in new hires.
The library is hosting the OCLC course, "CONTENTdm: Basic Instruction for Users" on Tuesday, February 14, 2006 from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm. Anyone interested in this please contact Kelly Peterson (kelly.peterson at oit.edu <mailto:kelly.peterson at oit.edu> )
Here's some news from the Shaw Historical Library.
The Shaw Historical Library is preparing its next journal issue on the activities of the Civilian Conservation Corps in the Land of Lakes (southern Oregon, northern California and northwester Nevada) for publication in fall 2006. As part of that research, the Library is searching for former enrollees of the CCC in those areas. We have some leads, but are always looking for more. If you can help, please call the Library at 541-885-1686.
The first event in the Library's annual winter and spring program series occurred on February 2, 2006 when Kale Bowling-Schaff, lead interpretative ranger at Lava Beds National Monument, gave a talk titled, "The Civilian Conservation Corps: A Legacy of Service at Lava Beds." The next event in the series will be March 2, 2006 when Craig Dorman, the Superintendent of Lava Beds National Monument, speaks on the Tule Lake Internment Center and its National Historic Landmark nomination.
