>The Siletz Valley Friends of the Library have traditionally celebrated the "birthday" of their library with the community, offering an open house, refreshments and entertainment to the community. This year, the group decided to make it a fundraiser for their new library project and invite everyone. Last fall, the group reached their fundraising goal for a new library building and went out for bid, believing they had the money needed to go ahead with the building process. The bids that came in were much higher than anyone anticipated, and all from out-of-town contractors.

>"Costs of everything have risen due to the demand for materials because of the hurricanes," Sally Jennings, SVFOL president, explained. "Transportation costs are up and we are having a mini building boom on the coast, so construction costs are up because contractors are busy. We couldn't have anticipated the many factors that are driving up the cost of construction right now. We have put years of time and energy into raising the money for our new building and we're determined to raise the additional funds needed to see this project through."

>The new library building will replace the old A-frame building that has housed the library since 1984. This building was originally constructed as a Jaycee's clubhouse, and has no foundation, insulation or ventilation system. The plywood sides, supports and roof are rotting. The library started with a donation of 500 books and has since grown into a very crowded facility with about 15,000 items available to check out, three public access computers and one staff computer.

>The design for the new library consists of a 4,200-square foot building with a 600-square foot program room that can be accessed after library hours. The plan also includes a children's area, a small study room, adult reading area and space for six public access computers.

>"The Oregon Coast Aquarium has been very generous to offer the use of their facility for this fundraiser so the small town of Siletz can start building a new library before the present one falls down," Sandy Bowe, Postmaster of the Siletz Post Office and chairperson of the event, stated. "We hope everyone will come and enjoy the turtle exhibit, the music, dancing and great food. We will have some great raffles for themed baskets donated by locals and a silent auction for some really unusual items. Come celebrate the 52nd birthday of the Siletz Library with us."
