Responsibilities: Planning, promoting, and presenting programs for preschoolers, grade-school-age children, and young adults, including early literacy programs;Development and management of children's and young adult collections; Planning and promoting children's outreach programs to schools, day care centers, and community groups ; Answering children's and young adult reference and reader's advisory questions; Using technology and online resources in reference, programming, and other areas; Compiling youth bibliographies and collection guides; Assisting the library director as needed; Assisting occasionally with circulation and other tasks as needed; Must be willing to work some evening hours and some Saturdays; Some travel/driving will be required for meetings and for outreach purposes.
Qualifications: Required: MLS (or significant work towards completing the master's degree) or a related bachelor's degree and recent experience and training which demonstrates the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the above duties. Recent experience or training in planning and providing programs for children from birth to young adult. Position Overview
This position serves as a public service librarian whose duties include reference services and bibliographic instruction both face to face and at a distance. Terms of Employment: 75 percent, 180 day assignment. Continuation of the assignment is based on the funding that supports the position.
Travel to outreach campuses, partner agencies, and other off-campus locations may be required. Work schedule may vary during peak periods and due to departmental needs. May include Saturday and/or evening work. Duty days will be scheduled from July through June. Recently hired faculty are expected to participate in a new faculty orientation.
Salary and Benefits
Faculty salary schedule, 2006/2007 Salary Range $28,053.75/yr. to $48,470.25/yr. (Hires will normally begin at step 3, $29,816.25/yr.) The college also provides an excellent benefits package, which includes medical, dental, and vision coverage (subject to employee and college collective bargaining agreements). The director will work with three other paid, part-time library staff - a volunteer coordinator, and two library clerks - and a strong cadre of volunteers who keep the library open 30+ hours per week. In April 2006 a new, and gloriously beautiful, 2500 sq. ft. library building was dedicated in North Plains, built and furnished entirely by donations and local fund-raising. In four years, the library has grown from an all-volunteer effort in a corner of the community center, to a full-service library and city department in a new building. The library has been working through Admission Guidelines to become a full member library of Washington County Cooperative Library Services under the mentorship of Hillsboro Public Library. This temporary position will run through Dec 31 as a minimum, with the potential for extension beyond that date. This position oversees all activities performed in the technical services department of the library including acquisitions, cataloging, processing and participation in management and planning in an online integrated library system environment. It also requires keeping abreast of and implementing upgrades and changes in the automated system within a seven library consortium (OPALL) using Endeavor information Systems' Voyager software, as well as updates and changes in other software tools and systems.
Job requirements: ALA-accredited MLS or equivalent, preferably with two or more years experience in an academic library setting. Knowledge and experience in fiscal and budgetary management relating to acquisitions. Familiarity with current cataloging practices, including Anglo-American Cataloging Rules, Dewey Decimal Classification, and OCLC bibliographic records. Computer proficiency including use of OCLC's Connexion software, and Microsoft's Outlook, Word, Excel, and Access.
