Bilingual Youth Librarian (Chinese, Russian, Spanish, Vietnamese)
Salary: $22.34 to $27.49 per hour, plus 4% language differential pay

The Multnomah County Library in Portland, Oregon is seeking candidates
for a full-time Bilingual Youth Librarian to enhance service to our
multicultural community. We are seeking candidates who are bilingual in
both English and in one of the Library's four targeted languages
(Chinese, Russian, Spanish, or Vietnamese). We currently have an opening
at our Midland Library. The Midland Library, also called the
"international branch," serves a multicultural neighborhood that
includes Latinos, Russian-speaking immigrants, as well as Chinese and
Vietnamese residents.  

Bilingual Youth Librarians assist all patrons, including
English-speakers and those patrons that speak one of the four targeted
languages, with a special emphasis on serving youth (ages 0 to 18),
families, and organizations that work with youth.  This position
performs the vital tasks of matching these patrons' personal,
educational, and recreational needs with appropriate information and
resources, and fostering literacy in youth and families. Bilingual Youth
Librarians must have a solid understanding of the Library's missions and
goals in order to meet the needs of the public. 

No experience is required; however, two years of professional Youth
Librarian experience is desirable. Experience planning, preparing, and
implementing culturally sensitive programs (including story times) that
are of interest to children, young adults, caregivers, and adults
working with children is preferred. Candidates must speak, write, and
read English and one of the four target languages (Chinese, Russian,
Spanish, Vietnamese) fluently. Must be a member or have close
affiliation, knowledge of, or extensive experience with one of the four
target language communities (Chinese, Russian, Spanish, Vietnamese)
demonstrated by knowledge of the traditions, values, and customs of the
community being served. All applicants must have or be within 3 months
of receiving an ALA accredited Master's Degree in Library Science.
