Understanding the OCLC Authority Record - Online
http://www.bcr.org/training/schedule/programdetail.php?programid=186
Description:
This workshop concentrates on authority records in OCLC - those for
personal names, corporate names, geographic names, subjects and titles.
We'll discuss the structure of the MARC authority record as it displays
in OCLC cataloging interfaces, including many of the fixed field
elements.
Looking at the broader picture, we'll talk about the purpose of
authority data and how it works with the headings in bibliographic
records to improve a catalog's organization and users' ability to
navigate through it and find the resources they need and want.
NOTE: This course is designed for individual participation. Regardless
of whether you attend as an individual or as a group, the fee for this
online workshop will be charged for each person who views the session.
All participants must register separately.

Using OCLC Authorities with the Connexion Client - Online
http://www.bcr.org/training/schedule/programdetail.php?programid=187
Description:
Ensuring that the headings you use in bibliographic records are in their
"correct" forms can be time consuming, but necessary to ensure that
records group together under the same heading. It's the way to make sure
that patrons looking for Beethoven can find all the versions of it in
your library, even if some of them have the title "Piano concerto no. 5,
op. 73" and others "Emperor Concerto". Authority records from the
National Authority File are made available to OCLC cataloging users in
the Authorities database, to assist members with authority control -
making sure that your bibliographic headings are correct.
This workshop focuses on the methods available to search for authority
records in OCLC's Connexion client interface as well as the process of
controlling headings in OCLC WorldCat bibliographic records. We'll also
look briefly at exporting authority records so that you may use them
locally.
NOTE: This course is designed for individual participation. Regardless
of whether you attend as an individual or as a group, the fee for this
online workshop will be charged for each person who views the session.
All participants must register separately.
