[Libs-Or] New Library Director at OHSU

Christopher J. Shaffer has accepted an appointment as OHSU's University Librarian, which he will assume on August 1.

 

A 15-year veteran of library services for academic and health care institutions, Chris brings a wealth of experience to our faculty, researchers and students. He comes to OHSU from the University of Iowa, where he currently serves as Assistant Director for Technology and Outreach at the Hardin Library for the Health Sciences. During his tenure there, Chris was an outstanding advocate for information services at the University, its hospitals and clinics, and throughout the state. 

 

Chris holds a Master of Science degree in Information Science from the University of North Texas and is the author and editor of numerous scholarly and technical publications. While at the University of Iowa, he led the library's strategic plan and directed the reference, education/outreach and circulation units. His deep interest in technology and commitment to outreach led to an impressive university-wide plan for advanced technology facilities and array of programs to serve health professionals and residents across Iowa. 

 

Chris will replace David Robinson, Vice Provost for Academic Technology, who has been interim University Librarian and chaired the search committee following the March retirement of Jim Morgan, OHSU University Librarian since 1976. Jim led the library through a period of dramatic transformation, including the opening of the Biomedical Information Communication Center, and we are delighted we have found a successor with the energy and vision required to meet the continually changing information needs of OHSU.
